A short (7 part) podcast on today’s Russia that you may find interesting. Boris Nemtsov’s daughter Zhanna talks about his life and death.

https://crooked.com/podcast-series/another-russia/

Boris Nemtsov was at the center of every major turning point in Russia’s modern history. He was an activist for democracy as the Soviet Union collapsed. He went from being heir apparent to President Yeltsin in the 90s, to leading the opposition movement when Putin took power in the 2000’s. When ...

Mikhail Gorbachev’s first job after graduating was traveling around villages telling people about Bolshevik crimes as part of Khrushchev’s efforts to end the Stalinist cult of personality. But the ordinary people he encountered did not care about tales of torture, murder and mass repression back in Leningrad or Moscow. Millions had volunteered to participate in Communist programs to build Soviet industry, transportation, and agriculture. They had suffered personal losses and enormous privation, but had, they thought, succeeded. Then came the war, and millions of them gave their blood and lives for the Generalissimo. They were not ready or willing to hear that the ideals they had followed were false, or that their sacrifices and suffering had been unnecessary and caused by Stalin’s policies and choices.

His opponents won, and today’s Russia is the consequence.

Many criticisms will be leveled at his life and work. He was a deeply flawed person whose personality made things worse at key times. But he was the rare leader who actually tried to make the world a better place. He will fairly be charged with the crackdowns in the Baltics, Kazakhstan and Georgia, but those crackdowns were the inevitable result of the Soviet system. When he had to make the choice, he chose to stop. Under any other leader, I believe, the unavoidable collapse of the Soviet Union and withdrawal from Eastern Europe would have followed the Yugoslavian scenario on a catastrophic scale.
