Anybody have any knowledge or direct experience with a film studio renting their car for a movie? I don't but I know one of my stepdad's Packards (I don't think it was this one) was used in a film they were shooting local after he'd sold it to somebody else.

When a studio needs cars they usually rent them from one of the film car rental agencies that specializes in that. But occasionally they will:

- Purchase the car and after filming sell it outright, sell it to another studio or keep it and shove it on some back-lot

- Rent a car/cars from locals

In the case of the latter: I've had friends who had their cars completely, professionally restored in exchange for using it in a film.
BUT... more often than not ... I've also had friends whose cars were returned to them screwed up. Dents, rips, stains, scratches etc. One was even completely repainted (poorly, and in a totally different color) without first consulting the owner. In these cases the legal fights were tedious with less-than-desirable outcomes.

Message: Think twice if you're approached by a studio asking if they can use your car. They know full well that many people will get all starry-eyed about "My car in a movie!" and rush you into a decision. Read the contract carefully.
