The sport, more commonly known as break dancing, originated in the Bronx, New York, in the 1970s.⁠

DJs started spinning vinyl a little bit differently and extending the break of a song, and then the people who were dancing to the break were called breakers, also known as B-girls and B-boys.⁠

As the sport reached mainstream consciousness, it was dubbed break dancing and gained popularity internationally.⁠

In celebration of Black History Month, we are highlighting inspiring black women who are makers, creators, and visionaries for this month's Spotlight.

Meet Lestarya Molloy, a USC Master of Science in Applied Psychology (MAPP) degree holder who pivoted from a successful career at Intel to launch Fridie Outdoors, a startup that empowers novice campers to deepen their knowledge of the open air. Fridie Outdoors' customizable, community-centered app provides the know-how needed to camp — from safety tips to easily prepared recipes. Accessible offline, the app makes camping accessible to everyone, especially people of color. Molloy's love for the outdoors arose from coping with family tragedies, and hiking became a way to heal. With Fridie Outdoors, she's not only helping people learn how to get back to nature through outdoor education but also building community as they do so.

Meet Clarenda Stanley, founder of Green Heffa Farms - a tea and herbal-blend business aimed at healing. Clarenda is part of less than 1% of Black rural landowners in the US and is using her platform to bring other Black women into agriculture to find their own source of healing and freedom. Despite facing roadblocks like loan denials and lack of government assistance, Clarenda hopes to create as much Black joy as possible in her community.

Meet Megan Piphus Peace - the first Black female puppeteer in Sesame Street's 50-year history! Megan's passion for puppetry led her to become a self-trained ventriloquist and puppeteer. She now voices the character of 6-year-old Gabrielle on Sesame Street and has made history with her role. Despite the challenges of learning muppet-style puppetry, Megan persevered and landed a full-time role on the show in 2021. Her journey is an inspiration to all aspiring puppeteers!

"Gloria Molina, the daughter of working-class parents and an unapologetic Chicana who transformed the political landscape of Los Angeles died Sunday night after a three-year battle with cancer.

Her death at her home in Mount Washington, surrounded by her family, was confirmed in a Facebook post on Molina’s official account. She was 74.

Molina’s political life had been a series of firsts that inspired generations of women and Latinos to seek public office — the first Latina Assembly member in California, the first Latina on the Los Angeles City Council, the first Latina on the L.A. County Board of Supervisors.

Through her rise, Molina strode through L.A.’s corridors of power with an outsider’s skepticism and an insider’s know-how. A populist equally informed by the Chicano and feminist movements and the immigrant ethos of her parents, Molina’s battlegrounds were many."
