I recently had the opportunity to compose and produce a tune for My name is Byf based on an "ancient recording" from the game Destiny.

For context, Byf creates in-depth videos exploring the lore of this franchise. I had a lot of fun creating the music for this lullaby which players discover as a text within the game.

The track features vocals by Ms Kenner, violin by Brooke Saulnier, and cello by John Dunlop.

I produced/mixed.

I am so excited for my new song “Stay (Please)” to be out in the world!

I wrote the first bit of “Stay” while touring with my friend Dylan Gombas back in 2016. I wrote about longing for someone who was both physically and emotionally unavailable, wishing she could be available out of convenience and familiarity. It was about growth, but not knowing exactly how and resorting back to what’s comfortable.

When Chris Hawnthorn and I began working on my next record this was one of those lingering melodies, even though years had passed. I still felt the burden of what I would’ve needed to be to keep her around, I still wanted to be it so damn bad, just for someone else.

So... we pressed record, and with the help of Ezra Oklan, Dan Bishop, and Jay Barclay it came to life.

Fran and I wanted to reimagine some of the music off her latest album. It can be challenging to approach songs you know like the back of your hand from a new perspective; it forces you to try new things and take musical risks. This one lives somewhere between the stripped-down live arrangement and a total remix.

For you production nerds, the instrumentation is as follows:

- Moog Sub 37 base line (with a pitch-shifted copy an octave up along with some Chrystallizer granular echo effects)

- Moog theremin patch for the creepy background melodies

- Moog played paraphonically (i.e. split into two voices) and multi-tracked to create the 4-note chord swells in the pre-chorus

- DFAM (yet another Moog... can you tell I like Moog?) made the crunchy percussion groove starting after the first chorus

- Also entering there is a Wurlitzer patch on the Nord going through an octave pedal and some delays. This same patch creates the rich pad in the outro with an added Tremolater effect for pumping.

- 808 samples (via Digitakt) enter in the outro section

- Some big guitar washes at the end (thanks Luke Awtry for the idea!)

- The Wurli hook at the end is pitched an additional octave down via Soundtoys Little Alter Boy. The way it glitches out on the delays was unexpected and amazing.

Here’s a behind the scenes look at how I mixed strings for my album! Dive in for a detailed post, audio nerds… . . Achieving the ‘right’ sound for strings recorded with close mics in a small room is a challenge. It’s not about the musician’s skill, but how acoustic instruments resonate within a space and how our ears perceive them from afar. While adding a reverb effect can help, it is only emulating a much more complex physical process which are ears are finely attuned to. . . Gathering a group of professional musicians in a large space has many challenges, which is why nowadays many musicians record at home and producers merge these parts to create an ensemble. There are major benefits to this approach, but the trade off (for me, anyway) is missing that sense of cohesion from being in the same room. . . In this experiment, I set up studio monitors and mics in a large room, trying to make it sound as if the musicians were actually there playing together. I played a blend of their close mic recordings and rerecorded the performance. Pulling up the faders on those room mics for the first time, the difference was night and day! . . For the final mix, I blended together some of the close mics and added plate reverb and tape echo for a little extra richness and “glue.” . . Thanks for checking it out!
