Did you know that Adoro_Ero, Nwada Adoro_Ero, and Ngwu Adoro_Ero are trinity-like deities of the ancient Ero/Alor people that still exist today?

In the olden days, the Ero/Alor people were feared in almost all the communities in the Igbo Nsukka region. The reason for this fear was their powerful and merciless deity, Adoro_Ero. It was believed that if you offended someone from Ero/Alor and they cried out to Adoro_Ero, you were in big trouble. Due to this fear of Adoro_Ero, parents from other communities discouraged their children from marrying Ero/Alor people. This created a stereotypical mentality towards the good people of Ero/Alor.

In the past, when an Ero/Alor woman died after marriage, it was customary to take her back to her father's land for burial. Failure to do so would result in Adoro_Ero wiping out the entire family wherever she was buried. This practice made people from other communities hesitant to marry Ero/Alor women. However, due to the advancement of civilization, this custom of taking an Alor woman back to her family for burial is no longer observed.

Alor/Ero had and still has a strong relationship with the people of Itchi N'Amudu due to the connection between the Alor deity (Adoro_Ero) and the powerful Nkwuma_Itchi. This relationship is the reason why Itchi people continued to marry Ero/Alor women, even when other communities were avoiding them and perpetuating stereotypes. There are historical records suggesting that Adoro_Ero invited some men from Itchi to become her in-laws by taking Ero/Alor women as wives.

Ero/Alor is a community in two phases located in different local governments. Ero/Alor Uno is situated in Nsukka LGA of Enugu, while Ero/Alor Agu is located in Igboeze South LGA of Enugu State

I have observed that couples often struggle with the decision of whether or not to change the wife's surname to match that of the husband in Igbo culture. In some cases, husbands even threaten divorce if their wives refuse to change their surnames.

However, I would like to share with you an interesting aspect of ancient Igbo tradition and culture. During that time, women were allowed to retain their father's surname even after marriage. They carried their family name with pride, and men did not object or campaign against this practice because it was deeply rooted in their cultural and traditional beliefs.

To illustrate this point, I can refer to my own paternal grandmother, whose name was Makata Ezeja. Ezeja is her family name, and she proudly carried it throughout her life. This serves as a cultural testament to the fact that even as married women, Igbo women of old maintained and identified themselves by their family names.

In a previous discussion, I touched upon the misconceptions and misinterpretations surrounding the differences between the AGU (leopard) and ODUM (lion) in Igbo culture. Today, I would like to address another important topic: the misconception about the Ishiagu attire. It is crucial to understand that what is commonly referred to as Ishiagu is actually Ishiodum. By clarifying this confusion, we can ensure that individuals interested in learning about the authentic language, concepts, culture, and history of IgboLand are not misled.

Misconception of Ishiagu as Ishiodum:
The popular Igbo attire known as Ishiagu is often mislabeled. In reality, what we commonly refer to as Ishiagu is actually Ishiodum. This misconception has led to confusion and a lack of understanding regarding the true nature of the attire.

To shed light on this issue, let us examine a series of pictures. In the first picture, we can see Don Jazzy wearing Ishiodum, which is erroneously labeled as Ishiagu. The second picture features someone wearing a design resembling a tiger. However, it is important to note that tigers never existed in IgboLand or Africa as a whole. Tigers are indigenous to Asia, much like lions are to Africa. This implies that tigers can only be found in Asia.

To provide a comprehensive understanding, the third and fourth picture showcases the authentic AGU leopard, representing the true essence of the AGU attire. Finally, the last picture displays the genuine Ishiagu attire, also known as leopard skin wear. It is crucial to differentiate between the two distinct attires to prevent further confusion and misleading information.

Addressing this misconception is of utmost importance as it ensures that individuals seeking to learn about the genuine language, concepts, culture, and history of IgboLand are equipped with accurate knowledge. By clarifying these distinctions, we can contribute to a deeper understanding and appreciation of Igbo tradition

Finally, the misconception surrounding the Ishiagu attire, which is commonly mislabeled as Ishiodum, needs to be corrected. Understanding the true nature of Ishiagu is crucial to accurately appreciate and preserve the language, concepts, culture, and history of IgboLand. By disseminating correct information, we can prevent further confusion and ensure that future generations have access to authentic knowledge.
