This feels impossible to write and hard to post, but everyone who has followed along on our journey deserves an update now that it has been made public.

Our beloved co-host Nicholas has passed away, leaving a huge hole in the nature nerd community.
I will be holding a virtual memorial next week for those who would like to say goodbye among our online nature nerd community. Please DM me if you’d like an invite.

I wanted to say a few words here as well. Thanks to everyone who followed our podcast. I’m not sure if I will continue or not. I’ll need some more time to figure out what feels right.

There’s so much to say about Nicholas as a friend, person, and an educator. Nicholas was a light too bright for this world. They taught literally thousands of people so much about nature and helped to bring so many “unloved” creatures into a beautiful light for everyone to appreciate in new ways. Their “totally unhinged” approach to nature education will be forever unmatched and never forgotten.

We all know how incredible their photography was and how much joy it brought them, and it’s crushing thinking I won’t see new pictures every day. Nicholas fought so hard to restore and repair their natural areas and teach others about how to do better. They were so passionate about making a difference in the world, and they truly did.

To my dear friend… I will miss you dearly. But more than anything I hope that you find peace in eternal wetlands and prairies full of light and life. We love you. See you on the other side Nicholas McCarney

Nicholas always kept their DMs open to others who needed a friend and someone to listen. If anyone needs anything, I’m here. You are not alone ❤️

Here is a photo of a stag beetle they sent me that they hadn’t posted yet. It’s not in full quality but they had said it was one of the hardest pics they had ever taken… and it’s one of my favorites… and I just hope seeing one new picture can bring some others joy too.

With love,
Kirstynn

Hey! We are still alive 🥳
Check out our latest episode!

We see a repeating pattern in the study of invasive species, where an invasive plant or animal is, well… invasive and even disastrous in one area, and endangered in their native ecosystem. And though it is a common pattern, it doesn’t cease to be interesting! Join us today while we take a dive into Tiger Salamanders (Ambystoma Sp.). As both an endangered and invasive salamander.

Snip 2.1.5 Bye Son... and Everyone Else

Most of us agree that human-related climate impacts have changed where megafauna can live, but do we have evidence for when that actually started to happen?

Join us in the conversation.
