And a very HAPPY Spring Day to all of you 🏵️🐞🌸🐝🌺

We woke up this morning and Debs said "hey, how about going for a paddle on Buffels River...."
"That sounds like a MIGHTY fine plan" I replied enthusiastically.
So after a quick clean up of Gypsy-Rose we hopped into Dory and headed off to BuffelsBaai.
We parked, entered Riverdeck (Buffalo Bay) and hired one of their paddleboats. What a laugh, we got in and then started going in circles!!! We EVENTUALLY got the steering right and headed up the river. It seems like the cormorants, jackal buzzards, ducks, weavers and various other birds were also out celebrating the first day of spring 🌞
Returning the boat we decided to head into the village and have a dunk in the sea.... Gotta continue the traditional 1st day of spring swim!!!
We rewarded ourselves with a yummy icecream eaten on the rocks whilst watching the dolphins performing a spectacular show in the waves!

So just to update you....
Sedgefield has got us hook, line and sinker!!!
These beautiful people have accepted us into their hearts and embraced us into the community.
We have found our tribe with the bowling peeps and are helping with .
The "group" was formed two years and is headed up by Linda Evans. Jeepers, what those people get up to in a day is PHENOMENAL!!!!
They have revived the beauty of Sedgefield by creating and maintaining the gardens in the village.
We are so proud to be a small part of this team ❤️

We are also starting up our gardening business, I'm glad we've been working in the bowls club garden to get to know the soil (sand) and plants that grow here.... TOTALLY different to EL.

Sending you all big hugs from the three of us 🤗

Rammetjie uitNek site was awesome, it's tucked away in the bush so it felt like we were wild camping.
Sitting round the firepit we reclined in our chairs and gazed at the stars twinkling between the thorn trees.
I slept very well (cos I'm half deaf 😜) but Debs was kept awake by the corn crickets = I swear they are from prehistoric days, they are monstrous things... Debs says when they rub their legs together it sounds like sandpaper, not so lekka in the middle of the night.
After packing up we went to say goodbye to Martin Oosthuizen who has riden 9000km through/around Africa.... RESPECT!!!
Getting onto the N1 we traveled along and hit a left into Matjiesfontein....we kept on singing "daars 'n train" (for those who remember the song).
I've never been there and was really impressed with the town. It felt as though we had stepped back into the early 1900's as the buildings have been preserved to that era. Of course we had to go to the station and YES = there was a train 😁
Another point of interest was that the first ever International Cricket match between Britain and RSA (Post WW2) took place here.
We were going have a caffeine boost at the famous Lord Milner Hotel but the sky had blacken with an impending storm. Jumping into Polly P we watched the wind dance dust devils in the arid landscape as we drove alongside lightning, forking from the bruised sky.
The sun smiled it's welcome through the clouds as we arrived at Sterland Campsite just outside Sutherland.
Jurg, the owner greeted and showed us where to pitch Carlie.
What an awesome place!!!!! Each site is set between a hedge of poplar trees making it very private.
His wife Rita has designed many interesting features on the property, my favourite being a labrinth which she created out of poplar trees and a type of salt bush.
Walking silently along, the path is dotted with old gum, hiking boots, takkies and various other shoes which somehow enhanced the feeling of peace and tranquility.
Alas, no stargazing that night but no stress to us as
we were treated to the most spectacular sunset, the sky glowed hues of pink topped off by a rainbow = a photographers DREAM!
After breakfast we ventured onto the Ouberg Pass heading into the Tankwa.
PEOPLE ..... I just need to say this = MAN, we live in the most beautiful country in the entire universe. Cresting a hill our world burst into a vast expanse of open plains....using our imagination we could easily have landed on the moon. In the distance The Great Fish River cut a jagged path through the rock strewn landscape.
Of course the pot came out and water boiled for our brew, sitting on nature placed stones we opened our souls as we drank in our surrounds.
Returning that evening we joined Jurg in his lecture room for an introduction to the star world. After impressing us with his vast knowledge we headed to 6 telescopes readying ourselves to be dazzled by natures jewelry box.

10/03/2024

Sitting on the "verandah" one morning sipping our coffee, Debs all of a sudden piped up
"hey, have you ever been to Sutherland"?
"Nope" I answered, "always wanted to go though".
"Well, why don't we just grab Carlie (the tent), load up Polly P and go check out them stars" ....
"Hell YES" I replied!!!!
Now apparently the best time to view them is mid winter, but with Debs knowing that I would probably turn into a frost bitten, grumpy ice maiden we decided the best time for US was NOW!
Learning from our previous trip we packed half the amount of stuff, but this time decided to include the reclining chairs that were gifted to us = perfect for star gazing we brainwaved!
Repeating the same route as our previous adventure we once again stopped in Carlizdorp to stock up on some grapes. It was actually quite lekker as we went to a different farm to pick this time. 7kgs of Hannepoort loaded into Polly P we drove along and turned off onto the Seweweekspoort road. Man, what a mind blowingly beautiful poort to go through, it's similar to Swartberg Pass but the gradient isn't as high or windy.
We desperately needed a caffeine fix so stopped at one of the many picturesque picnic sites.
Fully equipped basket placed on table the coffee was soon brewed, rusks dunked into steaming mugs, we drank in our beautiful surrounds.
Emerging from the mountains we continued onto Laingsburg. Hunting down a butchery we stocked up on our new addiction of lamb chops, got onto the ioverlander app and found a campsite on the outskirts of town.
Following directions we turned off onto Moordenaars Karoo road (not a very comforting name) 😜 crunched the gravel until finding the sign Buffelsrivier. Hitting a left we bumped along to the farm house.
Ringing of the bell fell of deaf ears so on wandering around the garden we came across the owners mom.
Warmly welcomed she showed us the different campsites her son had created a year prior.
Rammetjie uitNek called to us so parking Polly P we unpacked and set up Carlie.

Driving into Oudtshoorn we decided to stop and have a look around the town. We planned to check out the museum but they wanted to charge a RIDICULOUS amount to get in so we thought NOT!
Stocking up on some yummy billies (biltong), we continued onwards. We thought about staying at the Carlitzdorp Spa and Campsite but on arriving it was bordering on derelict, the campsites were dirty, pools neglected plus they wanted to charge an arm and a leg for the night. Unfazed we continued to "The Station" at Carlizdorp. Wow = what a unique spot.... The original train station has been converted into quaint bedrooms, the owners have created a stunning glamping area plus there are sites for ordinary camping.
We pitched "Carlie" the tent (decided to name her after Carlitzdorp), suited up in our cozzies and dunked ourselves in the most classic pool I've ever swum in....you'll see what mean by the picture!
Sufficiently cooled we headed into the village hungrily seeking Karoo lamb chops! We landed up in a totally random shop, standing over the chest freezer we dubiously took out some chops, boerie, and headed back to camp.
WELL the local advice was spot-on! We didn't even bother to put them on a plate = as true South Africans we ate straight off the fire, the fat dripping off our chins as we licked the last morsels from our fingers.
We arose to the pink dawn after a night filled with the sounds of hooting owls, night jars calling and crickets singing.
After our caffeine doses we headed to de Krantz Winery where we devoured the most delicious breakfast, with our tummies full and energy at max level we collected our cardboard boxes and strolled into the vineyards.
Scissors in hand we cut 14kgs of the sweetest Hanepoort Grapes I have ever tasted!
As a whole group of people arrived we decided to bide our time
lying on the furrow bridge, gazing through vines into the bluest sky while popping grapes into our mouths.
After spending another lamb chop braai night we broke camp, deflated Polly P's tyres and drove out on the Groenfontein road,
stopping en-route at Du-Swa-Ru olive and wine farm.
Journeying on we negotiated our way around the hairpin bends of the Swartberg Pass.
4pm = we found a road veering off into the bush, we had read that this was a wild camping spot.... Do we or don't we take the chance and just do it?
HELL YES!!!! Waiting until the road quietened we pitched Carlie.
The mountains glowed red as the sun began to set, lighting a charcoal fire (with 10 litre of water close by just in case) we braaied our last lamb chops.
What an unbelievable, exhilarating experience....

Silence
Satellites
Brilliant stars
Tranquility
Total gratitude

Awakening to tyres crunching the road we held our breaths, who was it... The Rangers????
Time: 6am
A few minutes later off they drove!
Letting out sighs of relief we brewed a coffee while we packed.
Driving into Prince Albert to inflate our Tyres, we ate a final breakfast at the Lazy Lizard before heading back to our precious Gypsy-Rose.

Another fantastic adventure and more to follow =

Okay, so I know that our page is about our adventures = BUT....
I want to pause for a moment and pay tribute to 3 beautiful ladies from our bowling club
Jean
Emily
Helen
They were tragically killed in a car accident in November last year.
A wonderful, crazy, adventurous, giving, inspiring fellow bowling lady bought a bench, commissioned an exceptionally talented young lady to paint it and positioned it on the side of A Green to honour these precious ladies.
I'm sure they would be totally stoked with the gesture and to know they will forever be remembered!
Respect gals = we sure do miss you 🌺

So I haven't felt like writing hence my lack of posts.
I've also thought that with us living in one place it may boring to read about our lives =
But anyway... here I am filling you in about the doings and happenings of the "Gypsy-Rosers".
We decided to spend 4 seasons in Sedge to get a "real feel" of the village and it's people.
In December we were chatting to a friend and mentioned that (to put it mildly) = we have fallen in love with the place ❤️, but we need to keep on rolling. His reply...
"If you are so happy, why move?"
Well it was like a light switch went on!
"Exactly" we thought, "why indeed"...
There is an incredible amount to see and do in the area so we've decided to use Gypsy-Rose Grand Dame as our "lock up and go" and get a tent to do satellite trips from here.
On we went to the Sedgefield Locals page and asked if anyone had a 2nd hand canvas tent for sale....
Wahla, as luck would have it there was one in Knysna 🙌 Perfect size, excellent condition plus the bonus of a stretcher and 2 mattresses thrown in for good measure!!!!
Where to for our first trip we deliberated....
We had heard about the grape picking at De Krantz Winery in Carlitzdorp.
With great excitement we packed up Polly P, googled the ioverlander.com app to check out campsites.
We found a quaint place called "The Station" that appealed to us.
We bade our farewells to Gypsy-Rose (promising we'll bring her a pressie), hopped into PP, picnic basket in prime position, our favourite Spotify tunes belting out at full tilt, anticipation bubbles popping in our tummies we put foot to pedal.
Driving over the Outeniqua Pass, the great Karoo lay before us in a mirage of heatwaves as the temperature soared to 38°s

15/11/2023

After months of training and preparations I loaded my pack into the car, said my farewells to Debs and Gypsy-Rose Grand Dame and hit the road.
I happily sang along to all my FAVOURITE tunes downloaded on Spotify.
Butterflies of excitement fluttered in my stomach as I gazed at the mountains between Riverdale and Barrydale = Traverse 7 of that Debs Sargent and I were about to hike.
Hugging Debs as I arrived we immediately started inspecting each other's gear, making sure we had everything required for the next 7 days.
The day finally dawned = After Tayla dropped us at the meeting point and loading our packs into the trailer we introduced ourselves to our fellow hikes.
To my absolute DELIGHT I saw that Andrew from T1 and 2 was to be one of our guides.
Arriving at in Barrydale we readied ourselves to set off.
Jurgen weighed our packs = YIKES, 17kgs = after swapping out tents it fortunately reduced to the 15k zone.
321 and we were off, feet crunching the dirt road as we headed towards our beloved mountains.
Darn.... My head started POUNDING, by the time we reached camp I was absolutely finished. "What the hell is wrong with me" I thought, my stomach nauseously churning.
Tents pitched we set about making supper.
After forcing myself to eat I Iurched into my tent....
Debs came to check on me, concern written all across her face.
During the dark night all the contents emptied from my stomach.
As dawn arrived my gut spoke to me "you can't carry on".
Stubbornly I ignored her!
Concensus reached we decided I walk up to the waterfall and access how I felt.
One foot in front of the other, my pack felt like a boulder on my back, Andrew encouraged me forward.
Reaching the waterfall tears disappointingly streamed down face.... That was it = I couldn't continue 😭
My new found tribe formed a circle around me and said goodbye.
Andrew, My Knight in shining Armour donned my pack and kindly led me down the mountain.
My heroine Tayla met us and drove me back to CT.
A visit to the doctor confirmed a hectic bladder infection that I don't think I fully recovered from 2 months earlier.
2 antibiotics later and 4 days in bed I started seeing the light of day.
I decided to surprise Debs by picking her up from the drop off point....(she thought I'd be back in Sedge).
I'm so darn proud of her for finishing = she is truly living up to her title of "Hardcore Debbie".💪
So here I am back with my two precious girls, feeling much stronger. My disappointment is subsiding but I'm chuffed that I'm FINALLY maturing and not pushing my body beyond her limit.

So aren't we LUCKY = my sista Gail spoilt us with a visit for 4 days! She stayed in our "Honeymoon Suite" as we call it.... Ozzie the tent FILLED with a queen size bed that we miraculously squeezed in! Styling hey 😉
We definitely made every second count starting with the in Sedge = they've started a food and music eve on a Wednesday, what a jol. We ate delicious swarmaras while sitting listening to a guy jamming the guitar! If you in the area this is a DEFINITE must ☝️
We were up early (relatively speaking) and headed to Wilderness to show Gail and Nerise (a friend) Cliffies Cave. I've shared about this place in one of my earlier posts, they were totally blown away with what he's created!
Onto coffee at the , I've been there for their delicious pizzas but didn't think they served such an aromatic blend of a brew.
Back to Sedge where Gail tried her hand at bowls = man, she's a pro waiting to join a club!!!
We made the most of the weather on Friday, packed all our brekkie goodies and headed to in the Knysna forest. It's amazing how bacon and eggs taste better when cooked amongst the trees next to a bubbling brook. We had to walk to the swimming hole afterwards, jeepers = the recent rain and winds were evident with trees being blown over and where the level of the water rose to.
A deviation drive to was a must on the way home! I just love the surfer vibe there with boards being used as back rests on the benches.
SATURDAY = the big game!!!! No man, I am so glad that we won.... My nerves could not stand another 1 point win 😱 what a game hey... We joined our fellow bowlers at the club and cheered our boys to victory after cooking up traditional boerie rolls, we abused Gail properly as she was on onion frying duty (she did a mighty fine job too)!
Sjoe, I am sooooo proud of the team and to be a South African! We truly live in a STUNNING country.
Sadly we bade Gail farewell on Sunday, we tried VERY HARD to convince her to stay but unfortunately we could not twist her arm.

22/10/2023

So today has been spent drying the tent and working out a run-off water system to prevent a repeat performance of yesterday. Yoh, all I can say is that we're so darn grateful that we weren't in Groot Brak Caravan Park = Gypsy-Rose Grand Dame would have changed into a boat!!!
We're sending out huge strength to all the people that have been affected by the HEEECCCTIC flooding. Mother Nature is definitely chipped off about something!!!
So I thought I'd tell you a tale about an event that took place last Sunday....
At the moment I'm training for Traverse 7 on The Rim of Africa. Life revolves around getting fit enough to scale the mountains and not be left groveling in the dust by my fellow hikers!
Debs has been fantastic in supporting my training, so (on Sunday) she thoughtfully suggested a walk...
The plan was to drop Polly P (the Fortuner) off at the Engen Garage, drive in Dory (the little car) to the road leading up to Cloud 9, leave her there, walk up, over, down, around the lake, back to Polly P, drive to fetch Dory and WALLAH a good walk be had!!!!
I donned a 12kg pack for good measure and off we ambled.
Reaching the top of Cloud 9 we took a break and gazed over the exquisite view of Sedgefield. This particular spot is exceptionally popular with the paragliding fraternity. On days when thermals are perfect, the sky is dotted with a colourful array of gliders literally just hanging out!... Continuing on we hit the downhill using our knees as brakes as our feet skidded on loose gravel.
The breeze was welcome as we reached the lake, only a short way to go and we would be back at Polly P.
All of a sudden I had a sinking feeling in my stomach...
"Where the hell are the keys" I thought.
Frantically I searched my pack...
OFFS... 🤬🤬🤬 I had left them in Dory's cubby hole!!!!
By this stage Debs realised something was amiss....
Yip = you are all right! She was NOT AT ALL CHARMED.
Our pleasant afternoon turned into a nightmare route march.
Yoh, I felt so bad!
Debs started pacing it out as I lagged behind = all I wanted to do was laugh hysterically... You know that feeling when know you MUSTN'T but you just can't help it.
Well, to cut a LOOOONNNNGGGG story short, 13 and a half kms later (with a stop in to buy two peace offering ice lollies), we make it back to Dory, fetched Polly P and headed for home.

Yes = she has forgiven me 😜😁😅

24/09/2023

A very good morning to all of you from a HECTICALLY windy Sedge (Sedgefield). We have reinforced our tent pegs so HOPEFULLY we won't blow away and land up in Mossel Bay!!!!!
Well alot and little has happened since we last connected with you. I know that doesn't make sense but hear me out...
We arrived in "slow town Sedge" by default in November last year. We fell in love with it's likeliness of Switzerland, set in a dell surrounded by forests, waterfalls and the added bonus of beautiful beaches, we decided to spend 4 full seasons here.
In this time we
* bade a sad farewell to our precious Gypsy-Rose and sent her out to make new adventures.
* moved into a retirement home in Hoekwil
* decided it DEFINITELY wasn't for us at this stage of our lives
* bought our new Gypsy-Rose and vehicle to tow (in January), had it delivered to Lake Pleasant Caravan Park = which has been our place of abode since then.
* towed for the first time = okay, so it was just 250 metres to the site around the bush but hey.... It's a start 😂😂😂
* explored the ancient forests
* traversed the majestic mountains
* walked the pristine beaches
* picnicked alongside gurgling streams
* roadied along route 62
* went for a bowling lesson
* got hooked
* joined the club
* met and have become friends with the most amazing people
* taken part in loads of nail biting comps... Plus MORE!
So now our feet are getting itchy and Gypsy-Rose Grand Dame is dying to get her tyres back on the tar.
Where to we ask ourselves.....???
Where ever the road takes us is the answer 😊
We've also been throwing around a few ideas = the one that resinates the most with us is....
Becoming "locum" Lodge/caravan park/guest house sitters. In our travels we have met so many "owners" who cannot take a break as they are bound to their business.
So if you hear of anyone in need of timeout please let us know.... they can have a well deserved holiday = resting assured that all is good in the hood back home!
