Malaysian man tests positive for coronavirus, bringing total infected to 18

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia today confirmed a new case of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), bringing the tally of infections in the country to 18.

The latest case is a 31-year-old Malaysian man who works in Macau and has a history of travel to China. He had returned to Malaysia on Feb 1.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the man started to cough and feel unwell on Feb 3.

"On Feb 4 and 6, he went to the clinic and received medication. On Feb 7, he still felt unwell and was referred to Banting Hospital, and thereafter to the Sungai Buloh Hospital where he was found positive for the novel coronavirus.

"The Selangor Health Department and Kuala Langat district health office are tracing his contacts."

Dr Noor Hisham also urged the people of Banting to be calm as the ministry has taken all necessary action.

Coronavirus Live Updates: More Than 800 Have Died in China, Surpassing Toll From SARS

The coronavirus death toll in China has risen to 811, surpassing the toll from the SARS epidemic of 2002-3, according to official data released on Sunday.

The number of confirmed infections rose to 37,198, according to China’s National Health Commission. Eighty-nine deaths and 2,656 new cases were recorded in the preceding 24 hours, most of them in Hubei Province, the heart of the outbreak. A United States citizen died from the coronavirus in Wuhan, the provincial capital of Hubei, American officials said on Saturday.

The SARS epidemic, which also began in China, killed 774 people worldwide. There have been only two confirmed deaths from the new coronavirus outside mainland China — one in Hong Kong and one in the Philippines.

Many doctors believe that deaths and infections from the current epidemic in China are undercounted because testing facilities at hospitals and laboratories are under severe strain.

Truth silenced again: An outspoken citizen is missing in Wuhan days after another died

(CNN)As people across China mourned the death of a whistleblower doctor in an almost unprecedented outpouring of grief and anger on Thursday, little did they know that another truth-teller of the coronavirus outbreak was being silenced, according to friends and family.

Chen Qiushi, a citizen journalist who had been doing critical reporting from Wuhan, the central Chinese city at the epicenter of the outbreak, went missing on Thursday evening, just as hundreds of thousands of people in China began demanding freedom of speech online.

Coronavirus: Newborn becomes youngest person diagnosed with virus

A Chinese newborn has been diagnosed with the new coronavirus just 30 hours after birth, the youngest case recorded so far, state media said.

The baby was born on 2 February in Wuhan, the epicentre of the virus.

The baby's mother tested positive before she gave birth. It is unclear how the disease was transmitted - in the womb, or after birth.

Only a handful of children have come down with the virus, which has killed 563 people and infected 28,018.

State media outlet Xinhua reported news of the infection late on Wednesday.

It added that the baby, who weighed 3.25kg at birth (7lbs 2oz), was now in a stable condition and under observation.

What is coronavirus and how worried should we be?

It is a member of the coronavirus family that has never been encountered before. Like other coronaviruses, it has come from animals. Many of those initially infected either worked or frequently shopped in the Huanan seafood wholesale market in the centre of the Chinese city, which also sold live and newly slaughtered animals.

Have there been other coronaviruses?

New and troubling viruses usually originate in animal hosts. Ebola and flu are other examples – severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) and Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome (Mers) are both caused by coronaviruses that came from animals. In 2002, Sars spread virtually unchecked to 37 countries, causing global panic, infecting more than 8,000 people and killing more than 750. Mers appears to be less easily passed from human to human, but has greater lethality, killing 35% of about 2,500 people who have been infected.

What are the symptoms caused by the Wuhan coronavirus?

The virus causes pneumonia. Those who have fallen ill are reported to suffer coughs, fever and breathing difficulties. In severe cases there can be organ failure. As this is viral pneumonia, antibiotics are of no use. The antiviral drugs we have against flu will not work. If people are admitted to hospital, they may get support for their lungs and other organs as well as fluids. Recovery will depend on the strength of their immune system. Many of those who have died were already in poor health.

Wuhan coronavirus deaths spike again as outbreak shows no signs of slowing

Hong Kong (CNN)The death toll and number of people infected by the Wuhan coronavirus continues to grow, with no signs of slowing despite severe quarantine and population control methods put in place in central China.

The number of confirmed cases globally stood at 28,256 as of Thursday morning, with more than 28,000 of those in China. The number of cases in China grew by 3,694, or 15%, on the previous day. There have been 563 deaths so far, all but two of which were in China, with one in the Philippines and one in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong announced a mandatory 14-day quarantine for all people entering the semi-autonomous city from the Chinese mainland, including residents. The move comes after all but three border crossings were closed to try and contain the virus.

5 charts show why the global economy is more vulnerable now than during SARS

As authorities in China race to contain the spread of a new coronavirus that has killed hundreds, investors are bracing for global economic fallout that some analysts said could be more severe than the SARS outbreak in 2003.

SARS, which stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome, first emerged in China’s Guangdong province before spreading to other countries. The virus claimed around 800 lives worldwide and shaved 0.5 to 1 percentage points off China’s growth in 2003, according to various estimates.

But the new coronavirus — believed to have originated in Wuhan city — has struck China at a time when its economy has grown larger and established greater connections with the world. That means any pressure on China’s growth now would hit the global economy harder than before.

Here are five charts that show how China’s economy has changed since the SARS epidemic.

World’s second-largest economy
Since 2003, China has grown from the world’s sixth-largest economy to the second biggest today behind the U.S. The country has been a main growth driver worldwide, with the International Monetary Fund estimating that China alone accounted for 39% of global economic expansion in 2019.

Even Without Symptoms, Wuhan Coronavirus May Spread, Experts Fear

A report purporting to describe asymptomatic transmission in Germany has come under fire. But many experts still believe it’s happening.

Can individuals infected with the Wuhan coronavirus spread it to others even if they aren’t showing symptoms?

It’s one of the most important questions confronting scientists. If even asymptomatic people can spread the virus, then it will be much, much harder to slow its spread.

Doctors in China claimed asymptomatic transmission was possible, and a letter published Jan. 30 in the New England Journal of Medicine appeared to back them up.

In the letter, scientists described a cluster of infections in Germany that had started with a traveler from Shanghai. The traveler had seemed healthy during her four-day visit to Bavaria, the researchers reported, and started feeling ill only after she boarded a return flight to China.

That report heightened anxiety among scientists worldwide, who said the finding suggested that containment of the Wuhan coronavirus would be nearly impossible.

But now health officials in Germany have raised doubts about the accuracy of that report. The visitor to Germany had “mild unspecific symptoms” while she was still in Germany, said Marieke Degen, a spokeswoman with the Robert Koch Institute, Germany’s public health institute, headquartered in Berlin.

Malaysia coronavirus cases rise to 10, including local man
KUALA LUMPUR: Two more cases of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) have been confirmed in Malaysia, the Health Ministry revealed today.

The first case is a 41-year-old Malaysian man – the first local to test positive for the infection. The second is a 63-year-old man from Wuhan, China, who arrived in Malaysia on Jan 18.

The two latest confirmed infections bring the tally of cases in the country to 10, with nine of the infections involving Chinese citizens.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the Malaysian man was confirmed as having the virus on Feb 3 and is currently at the Sungai Buloh Hospital.

“The man had been in Singapore from Jan 16 to 23 for a meeting which was also attended by a delegation from China.

“He returned to Malaysia on Jan 23. (He) developed a fever and cough and sought treatment at a private hospital in Selangor on Jan 29.

“He was referred to the Sungai Buloh Hospital on Feb 2 and tested positive for 2019-nCoV on Feb 3,” Dr Dzulkefly told a press conference here, today.

This Chinese doctor tried to save lives, but was silenced. Now he has coronavirus
By Yong Xiong and Nectar Gan, CNN

(CNN)On December 30, Li Wenliang dropped a bombshell in his medical school alumni group on the popular Chinese messaging app WeChat: seven patients from a local seafood market had been diagnosed with a SARS-like illness and quarantined in his hospital.

Li explained that, according to a test he had seen, the illness was a coronavirus -- a large family of viruses that includes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
Memories of SARS run deep in China, where a pandemic in 2003 killed hundreds following a government cover up. "I only wanted to remind my university classmates to be careful," he said.

Li, a 34-year-old doctor working in Wuhan, the central Chinese city at the epicenter of the deadly coronavirus outbreak, told his friends to warn their loved ones privately. But within hours screenshots of his messages had gone viral -- without his name being blurred. "When I saw them circulating online, I realized that it was out of my control and I would probably be punished," Li said.
He was right.

Soon after he posted the message, Li was accused of rumor-mongering by the Wuhan police. He was one of several medics targeted by police for trying to blow the whistle on the deadly virus in the early weeks of the outbreak. The virus has since claimed at least 425 lives and sickened more than 20,000 people globally -- including Li.

Necessary precautions taken when evacuating Malaysians from Wuhan

SEPANG (Bernama): Malaysian authorities took all precautionary measures when receiving Malaysians evacuated from coronavirus-hit Wuhan in China at the KL International Airport (KLIA) along with their spouses and children, some of whom are non-Malaysians.

They arrived home at 5.57am Tuesday (Feb 4) on board a special AirAsia flight in a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) mission mounted by the Malaysian government.

The 133 passengers and crew were met, among others, by a Hazardous Material (Hazmat) team and Health Ministry personnel on the tarmac before being taken a short distance by bus to the Air Disaster Unit (ADU) at KLIA where the decontamination and health screening processes took place.

Mindful of the danger posed by the virus that has reportedly killed more than 360 people, mostly in China, stringent procedures were laid out for the group arriving from the Wuhan Tianhe International Airport, to eliminate any risk of infecting others.

Beijing Sees ‘Major Test’ as Doors to China Close and Coronavirus Deaths Surpass SARS

The number of dead is likely to grow as the tally of confirmed infections surges by more than 2,000 every day. “There’s no sign that it’s getting better,” said a health expert.

China’s Communist Party leadership called the month-old coronavirus epidemic a “major test” on Monday as other nations escalated efforts to isolate China, unnerving China’s stock market, depressing global oil prices and raising new anxiety about the world’s most populous country.

The growing global move to effectively cut off China’s 1.4 billion people came as government officials reported the new coronavirus strain had killed more in mainland China, 425 as of Tuesday morning, than the SARS outbreak in 2002 and 2003, confirming it as one of the deadliest epidemics in recent Chinese history.

Many leading infectious disease experts say the outbreak is likely to become a pandemic, defined as an ongoing epidemic on two or more continents, and that stringent anti-contagion restrictions may have come too late.

“There’s no sign that it’s getting better,” said Leo P**n, division head of the public health laboratory sciences department at the University of Hong Kong. “We don’t see a pattern of decline, and that’s a problem.”
