Hey all! Apologies for the radio silence recently - I’ve been quite busy at Sony Music, but I’m loving it so far.

Quality Control (QC), which is my main responsibility at Sony, is an important step in the production of audio. QC engineers are the “last pair of hands” on mastered audio products, checking for any major errors or problems before they’re approved for distribution. These include extraneous noises, digital clicks and ticks, distortion, missed curse edits in clean edits, and many others.
———
Outside of standard stereo releases, we also work with immersive audio formats like Atmos and 360RA, 5.1 and 7.1, and even quadrophonic audio. In addition to standard QC checks, these products must be tested to ensure that they conform to distributor standards in both immersive and binaural (i.e., rendered down to stereo) formats.
——
I’m greatly enjoying my time at Sony so far. I’m hoping to do some more external audio work in the future, so stay tuned!
(Pictured are views from Sony’s US offices - since we work with high-security content, I can’t post much that I’ve worked on. Thankfully the neighborhood is quite photogenic!)

This past week, I had the amazing opportunity to visit a recording session run by in the beautiful . Seeing a professional recording session of chamber music was extremely informative, and I’m so glad I got to experience it in a place as gorgeous as Rockport.

Last Friday, I had the absolute pleasure of recording Elegos, a new piece by composer Jack Stamp in memory of Christopher Rouse, performed by the Syracuse University Symphony Orchestra.

Using an incredible collection of microphones from SCHOEPS Mikrofone and Shure, I was able to capture an amazing performance in a beautiful hall. I’m exited to begin working on the piece in post!

Working at DuArt Media Services, I got to learn how important Irwin Young was to the film industry, and by extension the audio industry. Both fields would be very different without him. Rest in peace.

Irwin “Butch” Wallace Young, the chairman of DuArt Film Laboratories who supported New York filmmakers for decades, died Jan. 20 in Manhattan. He was 94. An important part of New York C…

Hey everyone!

Today I’m working on music from the incomparable John Tocco, using the killer Scheps Omni Channel from Waves Audio.

As a mastering engineer, you have to look at the mix as a whole and consider what should be done to it - what isn’t blending with the whole? How can those problem spots be fixed? What can be done to bring the mix to the next level? Tools like the Scheps Omni, Solid State Logic (SSL) G-series channel strip, and iZotope Ozone 9 help me answer these questions and more.

I truly love working on music like this, and I hope to bring you even more in the future!
