SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT: Jonathan Burnett

Jonathan is an editor and cinematographer at Big Ocean Media, but is also always creating his own passion projects and helping others with their own artistic ventures. He loves so much about the craft of filmmaking, "it’s hard to distill it down to a singular thing...to be able to tell compelling stories, utilizing all these crafts and the abilities of so many artists, is so powerful."

He was drawn to filmmaking at 6 years old, when he grabbed his parents' camera for the first time. "My friends and I started by making (admittedly terrible) recreations of our favorite films, namely Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. In time we started to tell our own stories and I fell even more in love with the process."

Jonathan's degree in Electronic Media Production at Harding University opened his perspective to various forms of media. He also got a degree in Business Management because "the film industry is (at least) 50% purely a business and I wanted to be able to speak that language as well." He has steadily grown an audience on YouTube in hopes to move on to the world of features/television.

The people he's learned the most from are people he hasn't met, but feels he knows very well: Peter Jackson, John August and Craig Mazin. "Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy changed my life, but more than that, the extensive bonus features in the appendices truly opened my eyes to the wonders of filmmaking. The comprehensive look at how those movies were made was my film school." John and Craig host the Scriptnotes Podcast, a wonderful resource for storytellers.

Jonathan's constant collaborators are Danny Fleet and Matt Mullen. "I’ve been making films with them since we were 6, and they’ve always shown up. I wouldn’t be the filmmaker I am today without their talents, support and friendship."

Jonathan says that "if I don’t direct a feature film before I die, I will live my whole life in regret...I just want to tell stories, or be involved in telling stories, that move people. I also want to give back, be open about the process, and inspire the next generation of filmmakers…in the same way filmmakers like Peter Jackson inspired me."

SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT: Thomas Lunde

Director Thomas Lunde developed his skills in one of Norway’s leading production companies and has a strong passion for absurd slapstick, horror and sci-fi.

Creativity is his drug and he simply loves satire. He loves play around with gender roles, stereotypes and clichés. He strives to be genuine oddball always longing for creative freedom. Because under the right circumstances, he knows that "creativity can have a life of its own. And that’s where the real magic happens."

Thomas has directed several award winning music videos and short films, including A(r)men which he made in collaboration with Steinar Kaarstein. A(r)men won “Best of Shorts” over at Calgary International Film Festival - CIFF. His latest short Baby Boom has its world premiere at Tampere Film Festival on the 9th of March.

His career journey has been a "long, weird, and wild ride." He started out doing commercials and promos back in 2003 and now directs arty genre shorts which really challenge his audience. Over a 3 year period he has researched innovative use of interactivity and mixed-reality in collaboration with others at The Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

The person Thomas has learned the most from is Mona Johanne Hoel, who he has been working with for 2 years on his debut feature film. "She's really challenged me to listen to my heart and dig in my personal history. So it ended up as a kind of semi-biographical coming of age film with elements of magical realism. And so looking forward to shooting with a micro-crew."

His favorite person to work with is Martin Ødegaarden, who he calls his "brother from an alien mother". Thomas is very proud of Baby Boom, which is a crazy satire, sci-fi, horror, comedy.

Thomas' career goals are to have his feature film in production by 2024 and to have an interactive film ready for launch in 2023.

SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT: Rebecca Gibel

We’re excited to highlight Rebecca, an actor who played a role in our upcoming feature “Salvation”!

With a background in theatre, she’s worked extensively across the country. In TV/film, you can see her in two Best Picture Oscar nominees this year: Don't Look Up and CODA. She’s recurred on “Bridge & Tunnel”, NOS4A2 and made appearances on “The Plot Against America,” Law & Order SVU, and others.

Rebecca says working on set “brings together a group of people who relate to the world in profoundly different ways, then challenges us to harness our bodies, minds and hearts to make something together that has the power to transport, illuminate, and transform.”

She learns from everyone on set. When filming a scene for Salvation, she had only a couple sentences to establish a volatile relationship between herself and another character. After a couple takes, S***t Ulrich offered a suggestion. “Try it never looking up at the other guy.” This helped her realize a decision NOT to engage can be more evocative than struggling to connect.

Rebecca has worked with many fantastic people. “I had the privilege to be directed by the brilliant Richard Jenkins, and his equally brilliant wife, Sharon. They have a way of translating the given circumstances of a scene not only into emotionally immediate terms, but also dynamic behavior that makes the world of the play simultaneously fantastical and intimately real.” Watching Troy Kotsur from CODA work a scene was “a master class in making the simple shift of gaze on film drip with meaning and thought.” Ed Burns coordinates movement between actors and the camera into “an almost balletic dance that practically eliminates the need for a lot of coverage. Him and his DP, Jeff Muhlstock, shoot faster and more gracefully than anyone I’ve ever seen.”

Her favorite project? Salvation. “Mackenzie Munro has the poise and confidence of a director twice her age. Watching her lead that set with curiosity, openness and patience made me so excited to see what she does next!”

Rebecca wants to continue working in larger roles and on projects that challenge her as an actor and stir her as a human.

SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT: Matt Leake

Matt is a production sound mixer and boom operator who graduated from the University of Rhode Island in May 2021. He has worked on many short films and corporate productions and loves “catching noise” for all sorts of projects!

Matt joined the film industry because he “always had this need to entertain people”. Throughout high school, he dabbled with live-streaming and content creation on YouTube. He decided to pick a major that allowed him to continue to create and entertain. He’s always loved tech, so he enjoyed getting hands-on with the variety of gear at his school. After his first time as a sound mixer sophomore year, he realized he loved working on set (especially as a mixer) and would take a run at being a sound guy. Throughout college, Matt worked on every set he could to better his craft. Since graduating, he has had a jam packed schedule and even worked on his first feature film.

Matt has loved working as a boom op just as much as he’s enjoyed sound mixing. “Being an op under someone more experienced than me allows me to absorb their knowledge. In a department where you’re typically working alone, it’s always fun to have someone else on set that speaks soundie.” One of his favorite people to work under is Jeremy Eisener. He’s also learned a lot from fellow URI Alum Ryan Collins. “I’ve only op’d for him once, but whenever I have a question about the world of on-set audio he’s quick to respond with helpful information.”

Matt has genuinely enjoyed working with folks from URI and “out in the great big world of the New England film industry. Every production is different from the last with their own unique set of challenges.” If he had to pick his favorite, it would be Woodshedding directed by Viktor Herrmann, where he worked with friends he made on Trauma Bond by Jaina Cipriano. He learned a lot about audio while working under Jeremy, a very experienced mixer, and also got to see first hand how bigger sets run.

Matt is working hard to join Iatse 481. He’d love to be a mixer on a union show, but until then, he’ll keep working the indie scene, having fun, and helping people’s creative dreams come to life.

SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT: Hernando Planells

For Super Bowl Sunday, we’ve chosen to highlight someone special! Meet Hernando - a basketball coach, sports coordinator/choreographer and leadership speaker. In addition to coaching basketball all over the world, he’s worked in the film industry for 20+ years! He loves working in film because he is able to combine his passion of coaching and creativity all into one.

Hernando says he really just fell into his career path. In 2001 at 23 years old, he seized the opportunity to be a coach on the televised game of SlamBall, where he met Mark Ellis and Aimee McDaniel. They gave him the opportunity to work on the movie Coach Carter and his career took off from there.

He’s worked on numerous projects, many with Adam Sandler (Grown Ups 2, The Longest Yard and That's My Boy). One of his most recent projects, Disney+’s RISE, is a story about Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks. He traveled to Greece to film during the pandemic last spring!

Hernando says everyone he’s been able to work with has been absolutely amazing, but if he had to pick a favorite, it would be Adam Sandler. “From the moment I met him he treated me and my kids like family on and off the set.”

There are many people Hernando has learned from, but Aimee McDaniel and Jessi Sheldon who run Game Changing Films have taught him the most. “I’ve known both of them for 20 years and learned so much of the industry from them. From coordination, choreography, camera angles, casting etc, but the biggest lesson would be that no matter what project or where we are, we are all family. I know it sounds a bit corny but it’s the truth.”

He spent 7 years at Duke Athletics as the Associate Head Women’s Basketball coach, took a year off, then became the head coach at William Jessup University, an NAIA school in Sacramento, CA. About 8 months ago, he became the assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Illinois.

His advice for those who want to get into sports coordination? “Become great at what you do, take any job, build relationships and don’t stop moving forward. BUT above all else - enjoy your journey!”

Honoring one of the greatest men this earth has ever challenged, who so few people know.

10 years ago today, John Fairfax passed away at the age of 74 - but with more than a handful of lifetimes under his belt.

He left behind his lovely wife Tiffany Fairfax, who has become one of our closest and most loyal friends (and an “Honorary Goodrich”).

We mourn “The King’s” passing but celebrate his greatness.

SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT: Pepper Janes Gallegos

Pepper started her career in the makeup effects world around 20 years ago. "I've been an artist my entire life, never been good at anything else. LOL."

When her parents passed away, she did their funeral makeup. With her mother's face torn by the tape from her breathing apparatus, a closed casket seemed like her family's only option. Despite not knowing how to do special effects, she created a skin for her mother's face so her family and friends could have a proper goodbye with an open casket. When her father passed away, he looked nothing like himself after his time in the hospital. She wanted to give the people who loved him a good memory, not one of trauma.

She thought about becoming funeral home makeup artist, but did not want to become a licensed mortician. That's when she started her career in the film industry. "I could make people look like they were injured, or even dead, and the fun part is they talk back." She trained in Vancouver, Canada at Blanche Macdonald Centre.

Pepper loves the freedom her job gives her to create the most spectacular story of a human being in what has become of them. "Beauty makeup is great, but taking a beautiful person and completely changing them into someone else or creating a traumatic event on their body is even more enthralling to me."

She loves everything about the film industry. "We make people think certain things through visuals, guide what they feel, and tell a whole story within mere hours. How cool is that!"

Pepper learns something from everyone she works with. Her favorite person that she's worked with is by far Linda Hamilton. "She was such a joy to work with every single day...and looked strikingly similar to my mother, who had passed only a few years prior when I met her. We bonded like daughter and mother and it was like coming home everyday instead of going to work. She was remarkable...and the talent that oozed from her was intoxicating. She greeted every person in the morning with a smile and a hug. A true Beautiful Soul."

For those starting out in the industry, Pepper says follow your passion. "If it feels good, you're probably on the right path."

SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT: Lee VanderVeen

Lee is a graduating senior at the University of Rhode Island studying Film/Media and Leadership Studies. Throughout her academic and professional journey, she has had the unique opportunity to experience filmmaking from all different angles.

Lee has worked on the upcoming indie feature film Space Oddity as a set & office PA, in costumes on a short period piece titled To Dust All Return, and as a co-director and producer on several student films. These productions have shaped her into someone who really values and is inspired by those she works with. She has found a passion for producing and costuming at her time at URI, and loves that these positions require innovative thinking, organization, ambition and collaboration.

Throughout Lee’s childhood, she was always an avid reader and film-goer. Her first part-time job in high school was in the same plaza as a giant movie theater and she swears half her paychecks would go there. “There’s something really beautiful about having the opportunity to create something that’s meaningful to various communities of people. I wanted to make films that had the same impact on others as the movies that shaped me had on myself. I signed up for my first film class and the rest is history.”

𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘖𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘺, directed by Kyra Sedgwick, has taught her the most. “I worked with so many talented and experienced people in a fast paced environment and really felt like part of something larger than myself. It challenged me in ways that allowed me to utilize my adaptability and creativity which is something I always value in a job. I learned how many moving parts are involved in a film of that caliber and how everybody involved in the movie making process plays a role in the success of the film.”

Lee’s end goal is to be a production coordinator on a film or television series. She loves working with a lot of moving parts, making connections, and working hard to ensure the success of the projects that she’s a part of - even if that means a few more coffees and few less hours of sleep.
