On September 4th 2021 I began 5252@52 which is a challenge I took on to run 5252Km at age 52.

I gave myself until September 3rd 2022 (when I turn 53) to achieve this.

My main motivation was, and remains, my personal fitness, health and overall well-being.

As I’m already running 5252Km, I’ve decided I might as well use the challenge to give back somehow.

Last July, my sister Nicole passed away after battling ovarian cancer. She was only 67 and by far the fittest in my family. She was extremely athletic, a gym teacher, checked what she ate, had a strong circle of friends, was attuned to the latest in fitness, nutrition, as well as meditation and relaxation techniques.

All the things we get bombarded with as “keys” to health, wellbeing and longevity.

Despite her healthy lifestyle and choices, she got cancer. Genetics? Probably, as mom (breast) and dad (prostate) both died of cancer.

I didn’t need extra motivation to run 5252Km, but cancer decided to get involved.

Everyone knows someone past or present battling cancer.

I won’t cure it, but what I will do is help those who will by raising funds for the cancer council of NSW.

Please donate to Greg’s 5252 Challenge as a fundraiser for to the NSW Cancer Council.

Support me as I Do It For Cancer. Because 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, I'm raising funds to show my support. Please sponsor me and support my efforts to give back and change lives!

Long run today. On track for 5252@52.

I have not abandoned the 5252@52 challenge, I’ve been in the gym doing weight and resistance work which hopefully will improve my running.

As of November 13th I’ve clocked 400kms; which since September 4th (70 days) averages to slightly under 6Kms per day. Not bad, but nowhere near where I want to be.

I also promised I’d add 1km for everyday dollar raised in my recent 7 Bridges Challenge. People generously donated $300.

To simplify the math and make this thing even more challenging, I am now saying I’ll run 5,252km between today (November 13th) and my next birthday (September 4th 2022). If you’re keeping track that averages out to 16.5Kms per day.

This challenge is bigger than the physical component (and that pretty effing big).

I’m not comfortable posting before / after pictures or “look at me and my accomplishment” stories.

The line between confidence and cockiness is very thin.

I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to sharing accomplishments. I don’t want to come off as arrogant and I’m petrified at the possibility (as unlikely as it may be) of being criticised or challenged.

So yes, the making public of 5252@52 is a huge deal.

Running 18-20Kms per day is nothing next to what is going on in my mind (now that’s bragging).

Tomorrow (Sunday October 24th) I’ll be doing the 7 Bridges Challenge which is a 28Km run.

Because of COVID the race is being done virtually, which is cool as people anywhere can partake.

I’ll be running in the Southern Highlands of NSW.

This run is especially meaningful to me as earlier this year my sister Nicole passed away from cancer and donations to the 7 Bridges Challenge will go to the NSW Cancer Council.

The weather looks like it may pose a challenge, but as I’ve always said: “What are you gonna do if it rains on race day? Get wet”

I anticipate 4 hours to complete the challenge (I’m slow).

Looking forward to it.

Double your fun!!

Yes, I’ll still be adding the total amount of $$ donated to Greg’s 5252 at 52 Challenge

I’ll be conquering 28km this weekend for my 7 Bridges Challenge and from 8am tomorrow every donation to my fundraising page will be doubled!
I’d be so grateful if you could show your support and donate what you can, knowing it’ll have double the impact.
We’ve come a long way with cancer research but we still have so much more to discover if we’re going to create a cancer free future.
Check out my page and why I’m taking on such a long walk!

Weekend has come and gone, got in some solid KM’s.

In exactly a week (Sunday October 24th) I’ll be running the Cancer Council’s 7 Bridges Challenge comprising of 28Kms.

I’m doing this for my health and well-being, and also for my recently deceased sister Nicole.

At my current pace I expect to finish in slightly under 4 hours.

You can still donate to the Cancer Council and for every $$ donated to my run I will add an extra kilometer to Greg’s 5252 at 52 Challenge

In less than 2 weeks I’ll be doing the 7 Bridges Challenge which is a 28Km run.

Despite COVID restrictions easing up, I’ll still be doing it virtually and staying local (to me).

28Kms in the Southern Highlands isn’t a bad compromise.

Remember that ever dollar donated to my 7 Bridges run goes to the cancer council and for each dollar I will also add an extra kilometer to Greg’s 5252 at 52 Challenge.

5252@52 update

I promise big October news well here it is.

After raising funds for the dementia foundation, I was wavering between different causes to fundraise for. Mental Health has long been of importance to me. Children’s charities are very important. There are so many it was initially difficult to chose one.

Then at work they had Daffodil Day and it hit me like a barn door.

Cancer.

It took my dad (prostate), my mother (breast which had spread to other organs) and most recently my sister (ovarian).

We all know someone, usually close who has had cancer.

Just looking at my family, you can see it doesn’t discriminate on gender.

Whether you’re rich, poor, black, white, purple, green, male, female, Catholic, Muslim, Jewish, Scientologist, runner, cyclist, hockey player, even young or old. Cancer can get you.

My sister Nicole was a ball of energy. Physically active, are well, did all the right things. Cancer still got her. Genetics? Probably. Bad luck? For sure.

I don’t know why or how she (of all people) got it, but she did and as you can tell it hit me hard. Real hard.

All that said, let’s turn this into a challenge.

As part of 5252@52, I will raise funds for the Australian Cancer Council.

Sunday October 24th I’ll be taking part in Sydney’s 7 Bridges Walk. 28Kms.

Your Challenge, if you wish to accept it. Is to sponsor me.

I’ll make the challenge a little enticing.

For every dollar donate to my 7 Bridges Walk, I will add an extra kilometer to 5252@52 (If I raise $100 for 7 Bridges, 5252 becomes 5352).

So not only are you sponsoring me and donating to a great cause. You’re literally telling me “more!!!”

Sponsor me in the 2021 7 Bridges Walk for the Australian cancer council. It’ll mean a lot to me.

Greg’s 5252 at 52 Challenge update.

September 4th through October 3rd I’ve run 262Kms which averages out to 8.7Km per day.

Impressive, yet below the goal.

I still have to run 4,990Km in order to reach 5,252.

Thankfully I still have 11 months, or 48 weeks, or 335 days (depending how you want to measure it.

In order to reach my goal, over 11 months I need to average 454Kms per month.

Over 48 weeks, 104Kms per week.

Over 335 days, 15Kms per day.

Still very doable. I need to improve consistency.

Later in October I’ll be looking for encouragement, and maybe some fun….raising help.
