FRONT PAGES: January Temperatures And Immigrant Entrepreneurship -- - Ames, IA – The new year's slide can often be measured in the disappearance or resurgence of gym memberships, the loss of string lights on roofs and, perhaps most importantly, the colder winter weather. Iowa State University researchers discovered a surprising link between temperature drops and immigrant entrepreneurs. January is the coldest month in the United States. The working papers of the researchers reveal that the proportion of immigrants who are self-employed to those who are paid is higher in areas with warmer January temperatures (i.e. the South) than in regions with colder January temperatures (i.e. the Midwest). Specifically, the researchers found an additional 10 degrees Fahrenheit of mean January temperature is associated with a 1. 46% increase in the rate of immigrant entrepreneurs. "That may not sound like a lot, but if you go from a 10-degree mean temperature in a state like

Two $1,400 stimulus checks could be coming next month. Check to see if your eligibility .

The Los Angeles Times Editorial board became the latest entity in a commentary this week calling for Congress to revive President Biden’s expanded child credit .. Which, as everyone probably knows by now, this month reverted back to its pre-Covid max amount of $2,000 (instead of $3,600). That also means, at least for the time being, no new federal stimulus check in 2022 is coming. It's not happening yet, at least.

"It is deeply disappointing that one of America's most powerful tools for reducing childhood poverty, the expanded federal child credit, was allowed to end without so much as a vote by the US Senate." the LAT were opined .

There is a way to look at this issue from a half-full perspective that's worthwhile.

Astronomers have found evidence of a black hole snacking on a star in data gathered back in the 1980s, according to new research. The researchers say that they have identified the signature of such an event in data gathered during the 1980s, thanks to a pair of high school interns from Massachusetts. When a star comes too close to a black hole, the massive object's gravity tugs at the star, pulling matter into the black hole and producing a burst of light in what astronomers dub a tidal disruption event. And while astronomers have seen this phenomenon occur about 100 times, very few of those sightings rely on radio observations, as the 1980s event does. "Gravity around the

Tesla’s Full Self Driving Mode Price Rises, May Get Higher Price Hikes News

TeslaTesla CEO Elon Musk recently confirmed that the company is once again raising the price of its "full self-driving" (FSD) software by another $2,000 in the United States. Initially, the software was to cost $8,000, then $10,000, and now Musk tweeted the new price will be $12,000 starting January 17th, 2022.
This price increase by Tesla for its FSD software is not the first. It is, however, not fully self-driving. The United States currently does not allow cars to drive themselves. It's worth stating that this increase is only for the U.S. market, and Musk also confirmed the $199 per month subscription for access to the FSD beta would be getting a boost too, at a later date.
Tesla first started testing its full self-driving software in 2020, which was expected to cost only $8,000. In September last year, beta access was opened to Tesla

The UK public sector spent 4% less on IT and communications last year, but the top three spenders bucked the trend by spending over PS500m more in 2021.

According to figures from Tussell, the UK public sector spent PS10.2bn on IT and communications in 2021, compared with PS10. 63bn the previous year.
The analysis of the spending of 880 public sector organisations, including central government, local government, health services, education and transport, found that HM Revenue and Customs was again the biggest spender, investing PS1.1bn - a 30% increase on the previous year.

How to make AI greener and more efficient NEWS: Wirth Research, an engineering company that specialises in computational fluid dynamics, has become increasingly concerned with environmental sustainability.

It was initially focused on designing racing cars. This allowed clients to replace costly wind tunnel work by computerised modeling. However, in recent years, it has developed equipment that reduces the aerodynamic drag and a device that reduces cold air escape from supermarket fridges. This reduces energy consumption by 25%.
The Bicester-based firm also sought to decrease the energy consumption of its computerized modelling. This detailed model, which simulates half a million tiny cells of air for car aerodynamics, uses approximately half a billion electrons. The company had already adjusted each model's resolution, using a sub-millimetre mesh near the sharp edges.
In the middle of the pandemic, Wirth realized that its staff could work from home and moved its computing

Among our readers, Amazon KN95 masks are more popular than anything else since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. KN95 masks on Amazon are at the very top of the list. They are quite affordable, compared to similar options. Lately, black Hotodeal KN95 face masks have been super popular. These masks are the number one best-sellers. Amazon has reduced the price of these masks, allowing more people to order them. They're now only $1 70 each!

N95 masks have also been popular with BGR Deals readers, but nowhere near as popular as KN95 masks. Both scarcity and higher prices are contributing factors. But many of our readers still buy masks like these Kimberly-Clark N95 masks sold directly by Amazon.

Black Hole Theory One the greatest mysteries of astronomy is how galaxies are formed. The question is how stars form into "island Universes" instead of spreading evenly throughout the universe. One clue comes from the observation that most galaxies contain massive black holes at their centers. This has led to the idea that galaxies are formed around black holes, which serve as seeds for this process. But there is a problem with this idea. It is possible that stars could be prevented from colliding with black holes. However, nobody knows what. Winds of Change Now a new theory of black holes explains this process. Stephen Adler from Princeton University in New Jersey, says that the new theory "gives an overall mechanism by which central black holes can catalyze galaxie formation." Adler's new theory is based on the way black holes interact with dark energy, which astronomers think fills the universe. He claims that this energy causes black holes to release matter and create a

In our review of the Samsung 970 Evo Plus, we gave it four out of five stars. "The 970 EVO Plus is more affordable than ever, and will run like a champ the vast majority of the time," we said.

Samsung says the 970 Evo Plus features sequential read speeds up to 3,500 megabytes per second and sequential writes up to 3,300 MB/s. The 2TB model was not tested so we cannot confirm that these speeds are correct. We did find some slow down in transfer times due to the large cache size in the the 500GB version. This model may have a lower transfer speed than larger capacity drives, but it tends to have

Uber does not support ride hailing via Apple Watch NEWS: Did you know you can hail Uber with your Apple Watch? No? The message states that the Apple Watch app is no longer supported by us. We are sorry for the inconvenience. To emphasize the point, a crying emoticon is used.
The app is still not available in the Watch App Store. However, you will get an error message if it attempts to be used. It let you hail a ride and see the status of your request. You can also show the location of the vehicle. The smartphone app had more advanced functions, such as fare-splitting.
The grammatically challenged message suggests the app was pulled in haste. However, neither Uber nor Apple have commented. The App Store listing above explains that the app allows you to leave your phone at home and still hail a ride -

How Robots Work On the most basic level, human beings are made up of five major components: A body structureA muscle system to move the body structureA sensory system that receives information about the body and the surrounding environmentA power source to activate the muscles and sensorsA brain system that processes sensory information and tells the muscles what to doOf course, we also have some intangible attributes, such as intelligence and morality, but on the sheer physical level, the list above about covers it. A robot is composed of exactly the same components. A basic typical robot has a movable physical structure, a motor of some sort, a sensor system, a power supply and a computer "brain" that controls all of these elements. Robots are artificially created versions of animal life. They are devices that reproduce human behavior and can be used to mimic it. Joseph Engelberger, a pioneer in industrial robotics, once remarked, "I don't know how to define one, but I know

Haleakala and Maunakea, Hawai`i - For the very first time, astronomers have imaged in real time the dramatic end to a red supergiant's life, watching the massive star's rapid self-destruction and final death throes before it collapsed into a Type II supernova.
Using two Hawai`i telescopes - the University of Hawai`i Institute for Astronomy Pan-STARRS on Haleakala, Maui and W. M. Keck Observatory on Maunakea, Hawai`i Island - a team of researchers conducting the Young Supernova Experiment (YSE) transient survey observed the red supergiant during

Upon arriving at the event, it was hard not to immediately gravitate to the folding phones on display. I’d seen this phone before, but only in pictures. Dubbed Project Chicago, it made waves late last year when TCL admitted it had a “nearly complete” folding phone that it decided to cancel.
