I’m tired of the hypocrisy and selective outrage society displays in 2022 and recent years. Historically, a comedians’ job were to poke fun of serious situations, using humor as levity as a way to make a statement in an un-confrontational way. Essentially, comedians were untouchable because… making fun of people came with the territory, no matter how mean the jokes were.
With that being said, as of late, society has been attacking the comedic community as a whole, even protesting them (Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart) for jokes they deemed hateful, dangerous or as they said, simply going too far. Society has opened the door to criticizing and holding comedians accountable, signaling the dawn of the new modern day comedy.
Since comedians are being protested-forcing them to water down their acts, due to individuals and groups who have had their feelings hurt due to jokes made against them, we were asked to support because some jokes went too far. And we did and should have supported those folks.
Since art and offensive lines are subjective, NO ONE has a right to criticize Will Smith for feeling how he felt.
Violence is never the answer, however, as a man OR woman, everyone has a breaking point. You can’t continually make someone a punching bag and always expect them to smile or laugh it off, because “that’s their brand”—and in this case, especially when Chris seems to constantly be attacking the man’s wife, remember his “comedic” attacks on JPS in 2016? Google it.
I’m sure if WS could have a do-over he would’ve handled the situation differently or maybe even backstage—but again, we are all human, imperfect— and as the Bible says, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
In any event, congrats to the 🐐 for finally getting his well deserved Oscar, as the 5th black man in the last 16 years, and the academy’s 100 year existence, to win best actor category.
