Happy ! Listen below to the incredible call of the albatross and hear a snapshot of Dr Jaimie Cleeland describe the mating ritual of Albatross partners.

Strangely, sailors see Albatross as both a symbol of luck and doom. In the months Shaun was away working with the Australian Antarctic Division, I would often imagine the mighty albatross soaring around the ship in the huge seas of the Southern Ocean, perhaps gliding by icebergs close to .

I would imagine this Albatross, with her black eyes and graceful flight, keeping Shaun company as he watched on from the bridge of the ship.

Some say the call of the Albatross can give us an "autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR)" - you know that tingling sensation that usually begins on the scalp and moves down the back of your neck and spine?

Does the call elicit an ASMR for you??!

Exactly 1 year ago Lori took herself (and the kids!) on a 'Kakadu adventure' in an attempt to distract herself from the monotony, challenge and heartache of long distance love.

She remembers whispering into the audio recorder: "I spoke with Shaun last night, and we still don't have any idea when he'll be leaving Antarctica to come home. It's been two and a half months since we've seen each other."

Shaun had just broken the news that they couldn't reach Mawson Station due to a band of sea ice, 80 nautical mile wide. The Australian Antarctic Division had made the decision to fly in all essential food, fuel and swap out personnel via helicopters, a huge logistical feat. And one that would take much longer than a normal resupply.

Fast forward 12 month and Lori is back in Kakadu for work. This time the kids are home in Darwin with Shaun. What a difference a year can make!

Episode 3 of From Afar delves into feelings of longing and loneliness as Lori and Shaun ask the people around them how they manage intimacy from afar.

Today, on International Women's Day we celebrate the achievements of all women - those who inspire the world, and those who inspire their world.

In 2021, our host Lori chose to stay home, proud as punch as her husband Shaun travelled to Antarctica for work.

She was proud of her husband, but also herself, as she navigated the ups and downs of a long distance relationship whilst she parented their two kids and two dogs, fixed the many things that need fixing around the home, dealt with the mould and monsoon rain of wet season Darwin, got the kids to school, sport, doctors appointments, birthday parties, worked in her own business, joined a kick boxing club, and made a podcast!

Some might say that she "just stayed home" but we think she did a little more 😉 .

Happy International Women's Day to all the women and girls of the world!

Over the last two years, millions of us have been separated from the people we love. This Valentines Day, why not sink into new podcast, From Afar, to explore how long distance love impacts us all 💙💚💜.

“As we prepare for Shaun to depart for Antarctica, we decide to go on a quest, to ask the ‘experts’ around us - our friends, neighbours and shipmates - how they deal with being away and being left behind.

I buy an extra set of recording gear, stow it away amongst the beanies and thermals in Shaun’s bags, and order a fancy new mic for myself, and … press record," says host Lori Uden

A favourite task amongst the Watercraft Operators in Antarctica is wrangling ice! What a job 🐧 🐋 🌬❄️

This ensures that floating ice stays clear while refuelling Antarctic Stations.

I love 'meeting' these amazing people, via these cool little videos put out by the Australian Antarctic Division.

I find myself staring into their faces, imaging them in Antarctica, wondering how they'll deal with the challenges of remote living and sending them positive vibes for a wonderful season down south.

Exciting stuff! Australia's 2021/22 season has begun ❄️ ❄️ ❄️

Have you ever dreamed of working in ?

Pop your 🎧 on and find out what it's like with Australian Antarctic Expeditioner, Shaun Uden. With an audio recorder in his pocket, he travelled to Antarctica as a watercraft operator earlier this year, helping resupply Davis and Mawson Stations.

Along the way he records incredible sounds, like the ship cracking through pack ice, elephant seals fighting on the shore and the creaking of the ship as she thunders through the huge seas of the Southern Ocean.

He records audio diaries of his journey and interviews a bunch of his fellow Antarctic Expeditioners and Ship's Crew, capturing what life is like in the coldest, driest, highest place on Earth.
