NEW BOOK ALERT: ECHOES OF SILENCE BY OLORATO KATSE

We're thrilled to partner with Caves Academy to release its top achiever's debut book in July 2024. This milestone underscores the success of the Academy's innovative Creative Writing Program, which is the first of its kind in the country.

Olorato Katse, the author of "Echoes of Silence," studied Creative Writing at Caves Academy and is currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and Statistics at the University of Botswana. Beyond her academic pursuits, she enjoys reading and writing short stories and poems, with her faith in God serving as a constant source of strength.

"Echoes of Silence" is a captivating collection of short stories that Katse wrote as part of her requirements for her graduation from the Creative Writing Studies program at Caves Academy. The stories delve into the profound moments of silence that convey unspoken truths. Each story explores the lives of characters grappling with mental health issues such as anxiety, despair, alienation, and depression. Through her evocative writing, Katse amplifies the voices that linger in the spaces between words, leaving a lasting impression on readers and daring to liberate emotions previously hidden under the weight of being unheard.

Caves Academy continues to seek out the most promising literary talent in Botswana. The Academy is currently accepting submissions for this year’s Creative Writing classes. Applicants must be at least 14 years old and have access to the internet for e-learning via Teams and WhatsApp.

Interested individuals can apply by sending a brief description of themselves to [email protected] or WhatsApp texting +267 74 368 013 for more information. The program is strictly for those who apply and are accepted. Application is free.

"I wanted to write a book I longed for as a teenager - a guide on identity, addressing the fears I once held growing up in a culturally conservative and religious society that perpetuated heteronormativity. Unaware of what awaited, I spent years thinking my future held nothing apart from a life of imitation. Now, having engaged with young individuals nationwide who've read my work, I recognize the shared struggles. While progress has been made, many still question their place and if anyone cares. 'Matters of the Heart' was my way of saying 'yes, you do belong." Dr. Bryan Keitsemang, author of Matters of the Heart (Available now on Amazon).

“In , there's a scene where Martin rests his head on Legakwa’s lap and falls asleep. Legakwa doesn't move, even when his legs go numb, until Martin wakes up. It's such an ordinary moment yet profoundly intimate, showcasing the often underrated fact that companionship is the simplest form of affection. is a celebration of love and loss, capturing the essence of any couple's journey. Through the book, I aimed to portray Legakwa and Martin's relationship not as a lifestyle choice or something based on s*x, but as a natural relationship of any couple. I'm incredibly proud of this book and can't wait for all of you to read it.” Dr Bryan Keitsemang

FAQs: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT iREASON PUBLISHERS AND THE DEBUT AUTHORS’ PRIZE

Q: Do I pay to get published?

A: No. You do not, unless of course you’re self-publishing with us. Then you’ll have to purchase a publishing package. Otherwise, when we offer you a publishing deal, we’re the ones paying you and not the other way round. We give you an advance (nonrefundable sum of money to help you get by as we publish your book), turn your manuscript into a book, market it, sell it and share royalties with you.

ABOUT iREASON DEBUT AUTHORS’ PRIZE

Q: What if I’m self-published? Can I enter if I've already had work published?

A: We aren’t able to accept applications from writers who have had a book published. We want to discover new voices and writers who don’t already have access to the publishing industry.

Q: I've only just started my book project. Can I still enter?

A: Yes, provided you have enough material to complete the application form (including a synopsis of 200 words and an extract of 1,500 words for fiction and non-fiction, and a synopsis of 200 words and an extract of 500 words for poetry). Shortlisted writers will be assessed and a winner decided based on the strength of their manuscript (or as much of their manuscript as is available).

Q: My friend is working on a collection of poetry, and I am working on a novel. Why does he have to submit only 500 words, and I have to submit 2,500?

A: Poetry collections are generally a lot shorter than novels, and so we think it’s only fair to ask for less material from those submitting poetry.

Q: I've just turned 36. Can I enter?

A: Unfortunately, no. iReason Publishers was created as a home for a new generation of storytellers. For this, with our first prize, we wanted to focus on supporting younger writers, and so we settled on the 14–35 age range.

Q: Can I enter on behalf of someone else?

A: Yes, as long as the person you are submitting on behalf of fits the eligibility criteria and can be contacted via email or telephone.

Q: Will I get any feedback on my application?

A: Due to the volume of submissions expected, we unfortunately are not able to give individual feedback to every applicant. If you are successfully shortlisted, you will receive personalised one-on-one feedback on your work from one of our editors.

Q: Will I receive an advance if I win?

Yes.

A: What if I win and I don't accept the terms of the acquisition/advance? Can I take my project elsewhere?

Q: We would hope that we can agree on a deal that is acceptable to you. However, if you decide that the terms are unacceptable, you are entitled to reject them. In that event, we may select another winner from the group of shortlisted writers.

Q: If I win, when will my book be published?

A: A publishing schedule will be drawn up depending on the project, and taking into account how much material is available, and a publication date will be decided collaboratively, with the winning writer, and the iReason Publishers team. For most books, we would expect to publish approximately a year after a final manuscript is delivered.

Q: Can I submit my project to you outside of the prize?

A: Yes. Please follow us on social media to find out more information on how to get published, and feel free to drop us an email for further advice.

iREASON PUBLISHERS DEBUT AUTHORS’ PRIZE IS ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS

iReason Publishers is an independent publishing firm founded by Dr Bryan Keitsemang in 2021. It is a home for new voices that need to be heard and uplifted. Our aim is to publish the stories that will allow a new generation of writers and readers across Africa to see themselves represented more regularly within the pages of a book.

This year we’re excited to launch iReason Publishers Debut Authors’ Prize, a writing competition that is open to young, underrepresented, and unpublished writers from Southern Africa.

WHAT’S ON OFFER?

The winner of the Debut Authors’ Prize will receive a publishing contract with iReason Publishers. All shortlisted writers will also be invited to our Writers’ Festival, where they will be able to participate in writing workshops, panel discussions, editorial one-to-ones, and meet the iReason Publishers team.

The prize will also aim to provide all applicants with the tools, information and access they need to develop their ideas, progress their writing and set off on the path to publication.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We’re looking for unpublished writers aged between 14 and 35 who are currently a resident of any country in Southern Africa. If you have a manuscript you are working on, or an idea ready to be put onto paper, we want to hear from you.

We are looking for writers telling the stories that are not being heard, and the stories that deserve to be read, across fiction, non-fiction or poetry.

HOW TO APPLY

Works must be written either in English or Setswana.

We are asking for a 200 word synopsis and 1,500 word extract for works of fiction and non-fiction, and a 200 word synopsis and 500 word extract for works of poetry.

Send your application to: [email protected] with the subject “Debut Authors’ Prize New Submission”.

Deadline: 23:59, 09 June 2023

Entry is free.

The biggest challenge for the memoirist is writing about the events in their life that could hurt the people they care about. No parent raises their child without fumbling, and no one makes it out of childhood unscathed, but it’s still difficult telling the uncomfortable story. It’s difficult to write with honesty and not get exiled. However, one must write about their life as they’ve lived it because, as suggests, “sanitized writing does nothing but lock the pain away and allow it to fester.”
