Quarterdeck 47 w/ Captain Little Pal is the place where anything goes. This program will explore and flirt with all kinds of musical and cultural currents and genres. Through the best musical selections, Paloma reviews and explores the histories of the most influential groups in musical history, from the acclaimed to the forgotten and ignored. For the most part, the heaviest rock and its sub-genres will reign, but electronic rhythms, funk, soul and absolute psychedelia will not be left out.

NEW: Tonight from 19:00, Radio WORM is thrilled to welcome longstanding project Radio Volcán Mudo to the schedule. The project serves as a bridge, connecting listeners around the world to the heart of African, Latin American, Caribbean, and jazz music. Every note, rhythm, and melody tells a story, echoing the common ground and cultural influences that have shaped these incredible musical traditions.

Kevin Simón Mancera has dedicated over a decade to the Radio Volcán Mudo project, being constantly present and creating a new show every month. El Javier_B is been a regular host of shows at Operator Radio, Open-Source Radio, and Penossi Radio. Twice a month, they’ll delve into a carefully curated script featuring a distinct genre or topic, exploring diverse melodies across various musical genres. Each episode will include a brief presentation of every featured song, prioritizing the sounds. Expect special guests with expertise in these genres too!

They write: “We want to make a show where we can be in touch with the rhythmic heartbeat of Africa, where the ancient traditions of drumming, singing, and storytelling come to life. introduces you to the soulful rhythms that have inspired generations, showcasing the diversity of African musical styles. We will explore the sound of Caribbean music beyond the preconceptions of beach and vacation so that the listener can come into contact with much darker and more avant-garde rhythms; The same will happen with the sounds coming from Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela, where the creation of new rhythms was and continues to be an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Jazz was another genre that in its search for a more spiritual path learned from the sounds coming from Africa, not only with traditional drums but also with the incorporation of new instruments, languages and musical structures and spiritual paths that consolidated the creation of contemporary jazz.”

NEW on Radio WORM: the team behind the Platform Voor Extratonaliteit explores the latest in extratonal tendencies. Famed, among other things, for their regular Extratonal Infrastructure gigs at Varia, the team has developed Extratonality to focus on sonic (and neighboring) activities that reject distinctions between high and low, exceptional and boring, serious and pop. It stretches the classical paradigms of music (balance, contrast, focus, movement, pattern, proportion, rhythm and unity) and expands them with conceptual, technical and performative principles from other disciplines. Curious? Check out extratonal.org and tune in Tuesdays 19:00-20:00, every 4 weeks, starting tonight!

Today, our first day back for 2024, we're honoured to have Ilkyaz in the studio. Currently based in Berlin, Ilkyaz produces sounds and performs live for theatres alongside the spatial experimentation through field recording, capturing not only the audio essence but also the ephemeral nature of sound in different places. While dropping by WORM's Sound Studios this week, she'll also bring some treasures for the radio from 14:00 to help us gently prise open the year ahead.

02/01/2024

Radio WORM is back for 2024 with joy: Wednesday means Cinema Colombiano, and for their first show of the new year Mitze Apocalipze and Chucho Vinilo will be joined in the studio by none other than Edgar Nevermoo!

In their words: "Edgar Nevermoo has been a vinyl-only DJ at our events ever since the Cinema Colombiano-film festival in 2018. He always manages to surprise us and the audience with his diverse selection of obscure records. This Wednesday we're going to find out how he began his journey into cumbia and Colombian music, while playing songs from his vast vinyl collection. Aside from this passion, we'll talk about his work with Kapitaal in Utrecht including the events that he helps to organize there. And we might even talk about his involvement with the mysterious cumbia-duo Los Ratons! "

Join online on Wednesday at 16:00! And, be aware, from now on Mitze y Chucho will be playing once every two weeks, instead of weekly. Double the reason to tune in, no? And, hats off to these Radio WORM stalwarts who’ve been holding it down week by week since 2021.

TODAY at 19:00, a special broadcast from the recent archive: we're so happy to bring you this recording from the October edition of PLAYGROUND, thanks to WORM Pirate Bay and Rotterdam Ballroom Arena! KNOW YOUR HISTORY is a panel discussion documenting the history of the Dutch ballroom scene. Previously we have taken a closer look into the Dutch ballroom history with our interviews with Haus of Shoqlat and House of Vineyard. For this edition, we wanted to highlight the experience of the non-binary community members in our scene. We invited four special guests, Thorn Vineyard, Dayo Ninja, Monika Vineyard, and Lion 007 to discuss their journey with us.

KNOW YOUR HISTORY is a larger part of the PLAYGROUND program. PLAYGROUND is a space for the growing and glowing ballroom community in Rotterdam and beyond to come together, share, learn, try, fail and most importantly vogue downnnn!

Overcoming the loneliness that may exist as a layer in our lives, this show attempts to connect different people from different artistic disciplines and open a conversation between us. Vanessa discusses with different music makers and artists based in Rotterdam, creating dialogues in open conversations that may lead to unexpected ends. Over the pre-recorded discussions in the place of choice of the invited artists, Vanessa will share music, words and personal thoughts.

In this first episode, “The bunny and the rat”, Vanessa asks: how do we deal with anxiety while performing? How can improvisation be soothing for the dark side of a performer? Do we all feel this way? What inner paths do we follow as artists and educators to find ease in our practice and in this world? She discusses with Josue Amador at his home and Christine Cornwell in Batavierhuis. These two Rotterdam-based artists, musicians and improvisers share their thoughts and vision about the multidimensional existence of creativity.

Vanessa is a performer, vocalist, music maker and educator from Athens, Greece and based in Rotterdam. She likes to create music with intimacy and whispers. She likes poetry, long discussions and constant distractions. She thinks of her songs like photographs that will describe a moment forever.

Sunday 10th December is International Human Rights Day; this year marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Audio and sound creators around the world are joining us, by contributing a radio show (live or pre-recorded) responding to this question: "what does peace sound like to you?" Their radio shows might comprise speech, music, field recording, conversation, expression - or a mix of any of all of this - however they wish to interpret the theme. The collection explores the meaning of peace at a time when the concept feels increasingly distant; bringing together voices from around the globe, including Australia, Uruguay, UK, Japan, Palestine, Croatia, China, and more.

The 24-hour broadcast, titled PEACE FREQUENCIES, will be streamed globally from the studio of EHFM in Scotland, and relayed on stations including Resonance Extra, ∏Node, Радіо Аристократи, LOOSE.fm, USMA RADIO, radiOrakel, The Lake Radio, Tīrkultūra, OOO Radio, BCFM. It commences at 12 midday GMT/11 am CET on Saturday 9 December (picked up here at Radio WORM from 6pm), ending at 12 midday GMT/11 am CET on Sunday 10th December, 2023.

Tonight 20:00-21:00 on the second episode of an other radio show: the hosts of Rotterdam project space an other world will be talking to Jake Caleb about his project A passage - a body of work investigating the suppression of certain narratives within society, especially those pertaining to migration and grief. The work follows a ‘pilgrimage’ the artist made earlier this year to Allahabad, India to trace the history of his ancestor John James Caleb, a priest of Indian descent. This journey was sparked by the death of the artist’s father Nicholas Caleb due to Covid-19 in 2021. Caleb found the grief of his father’s death difficult to translate into words with large parts of it remaining unspoken. When given the space to discuss both grief and assimilation, he came across a lack of words to adequately describe them. In this paradoxical situation, he found himself questioning the difference between what is left unsaid and what is beyond words. Audio material from the listening sessions that took place will be played and discussed.

A passage is the first part of On Mending, a three part project that explores the theme of healing as a collective experience or practice. In developing the program an other world asked themselves: what role can art play in healing our collective body?

Jake Caleb (1990, UK) is an artist based in Rotterdam, NL. His work is concerned with the unspoken, unheard or non-verbal in public space. He sees this as a listening practice that draws attention to the unnoticed within the ecologies and social structures we find ourselves within. His works co-opt certain structures such as a choir, a photoshoot or a film screening. By repositioning what is valued within these cultural forms, he asks if there are alternative models for our shared existence.

SPECIAL: PASAKA presents Cvi Parkas, Sunday 3 December 15:00-16:00 🌿🌿 A series of live recordings from Cvi Parkas [for those non-Lithuanians: pronounced something like ‘tzvee-parkas’], a little gem based in a central park in Vilnius, Lithuania's capital, the heart of Europe. Cvi Parkas is an open-air embrace: nominally serving vegan Israeli street food and great drinks, but also a place of live music, table tennis, meditation…those things that happen in parks. For this special, we hear an hour of live magic.

A beaut session of Nederlandstalige verhalen tomorrow, for your Sunday listening: Tussen Plank en Pleur, 11:00-13:00 and Het Verhaal van je Leven, 14:00-15:00!

Today on The Week in WORM, 17:00-18:00: Mojca Zupančič (keys, voice) and Tisa Neža Herlec (voice, objects, flutes) are longtime co-creators, actively performing at home and abroad, most often in the formation of a duo, which sporadically expands into larger ensembles. Genre-wise, they span beyond electronic ambient music, contemporary improvisation, cabaret and inspired, intuitive poetry. They perform with a great deal of theatricality and liveliness, as well as frank realism, with which they appeal to that within humans that is common to us all. They are also no strangers to WORM!

Tisa (host of Radio WORM shows The Side Entrance and Residential) and Mojca have come straight from an intensive months-long tour of Japan to the WORM Sound Studios to work on new material together. How has that been? In this Week in WORM hour, we’ll find out!

On the 6th episode of Desperate Hobbies' second season, Angelica and Lili take a break from their instruments to make another kind of noise. They haven't seen each other in a while, so as a warm up and catch up before a rehearsal session they speak about their respective relationship to working with textiles and fabrics. They talk around and about what they usually do on Desperate Hobbies when they're making music – the balance between improvisation and planning, gendered labor assumptions, learning experiences outside of institutions, visibility, leisure, work, craft, art. Punk as a verb surfaces again. Angelica mends as a practice, but never ask Lili to repair your clothes. She'll take them and never give them back, on purpose. Did your grandmother knit? Did you ever ask her why? And also, so what???

NEW THIS MORNING (yes, this morning!): The early Sunday ambient show we've been missing. Recently making the move across the channel to Roffa, Pitman is an enthusiast of all things electronic music. This show focuses on ambient/lush/dubby/lo-fi sounds to ease into Sunday and accompany those weekend chores. Maybe for an hour, maybe two. Partly due to an inability to deal with technology, tunes will be drawn from Pitman's expanding vinyl collection. We're not upset about that.

At Worm we do residencies and exchanges and concerts. It is of course a win-win-win situation if we can put all those elements in one project. Cafe Oto is one of the best places in London for experimental – let’s call it that – music. For this project, Oto invited 4 performing artists from Roffa & the surrounding area and Worm did the same with London(ish)ers. On Thursday night, these eight artists - vo ezn, Duncan Harrison, Reinier van Houdt, Ash Kilmartin, Ecka Mordecai, Lia Mazzari, Billy Steiger, Jacco Weener - will perform together and maybe solo. What will happen there is still unclear at the time of writing. This afternoon, they’ll play for an hour on the radio, direct from UBIK where they’ve been set up for the past couple of days.

WORM Open City Welcomes... is Radio WORM's open spot for new DJs to present their live or pre-recorded mixes. Every two weeks you'll hear someone different stepping up to the plates for the first time at Radio WORM, maybe for their first time in Rotterdam, or maybe even their first time ever.

This week, we welcome Winter with his mix ‘Seasons Change’: learning to embrace change through different expressions of electronic music. Through photography and music Winter has found a passion for finding ways in which images and audio translate into emotions and vice versa. Growing up around the world he has learned to never settle for comfort and aims to explore this inconsistency through different energies in music.
