Why 2024 will be the “year of creative emergence” when it comes to AI?

Next year, design is going to begin its largest transformation of our discipline. Artificial intelligence entered the world’s focus this year, but next year will bring integration. While we have a lot of concerns to work through (i.e. bias, deep fakes, etc.) as a society, there’s no way to ignore the power and possibilities that have been unleashed. AI is changing what we make and how we make it.

Starting with what we make, designers will need to redefine the way humans interact with products that have increased intelligence and capabilities. We will move beyond basic chatbots and interfaces will become increasingly sophisticated multi-modal, real-time experiences like what we’re seeing with emergent tools like tldraw or Krea AI. Designers will need to reshape the way we interact with technology by finding opportunities at the intersection of designing for people and business.

On the flip side, the way we make things is being redefined by generative AI, challenging workflows and personal identities. Designers must hone in on their ability to define what should be made and why, as GenAI provides the ability for nearly anything to be made at a rapid pace. Even though design tools are becoming increasingly democratized, designers will be best positioned to become the most effective AI art directors and curators. As identified in the AI Playbook for Design Teams, creatives will require reskilling and retooling across all design teams.

Censorship versus free expression: where do design and cultural institutions stand?

Ahead of the Young V&A’s reopening on 1 July, the design museum aimed at children, formerly the Museum of Childhood, came under criticism for removing LGBTQ+ items in its displays and shop.

Among the items was a Stonewall-produced poster that reads “Some people are trans. Get over it!”

The news came at a time when an increasing number of brands were seen to be bowing to pressure to retract trans-inclusive products and messaging. There has also been a rise in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in the US, and statistics show increased violence against LGBTQ+ people – while also coinciding with Pride month.

Recruitment data has revealed that design consultancies were hesitant to hire junior talent in 2022, instead opting for more experienced workers who are seen to require less guidance and training. With this in mind we asked designers how they feel about it, why else it might be happening and how design studios can benefit from having more junior designers on the team.

We feel it is essential and our responsibility to support the next generation of talent.

We’ve always gone back to the belief that young talent – especially through the success of our intern academy, in which many have become leaders at HotSpot Agency – brings new, positive energy and ideas to the studio.

One advantage is that we get to train them in the HotSpot Agency Way – our ethos, values and principles. More than that, it’s exciting to see someone grow and flourish, which is part of the mutual reward and value.

There’s no denying it does take commitment and time as well as a coaching environment that fosters the junior creatives, but it’s well worth it as long as you maintain the right balance of talent and expertise on the team.

Threads, Twitter, or neither: which social platforms work best for designers?

“At HotSpot Agency we focus mostly on LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter. LinkedIn is key as many of our clients and peers are on there, so it acts as a strong platform for sharing work and building awareness and reputation. Instagram is great as you can do more with it creatively across the feed, stories and reels, but our audience there is mostly future talent and peers, with some exceptions on the client-side, who are usually from design or creative discipline.

Twitter can be good to work with using particular hashtags, especially around industry events or particular sectors. For example, if we are doing the rebrand of a football club it can really help to tag the club, and gets exposure with the ‘Twitterati’ outside of the marketing and design world.

We have been working on new motion case studies for LinkedIn to showcase a whole project within one short video – this works for the more one-dimensional platform format.”

Designing out racism is “work for everyone”!

Design educators Lisa E. Mercer and Terresa Moses explain in their new book, Racism Untaught, how design can offer tools for anti-racism accessible to anyone.
“Anti-racist work is work that is for everyone”, says Terresa Moses, one of two “veteran anti-racist design educators” alongside Lisa E. Mercer, who have co-authored the new book Racism Untaught: Revealing and Unlearning Racialized Design.

Working from the understanding that many of the objects, brands, spaces and systems around us today have been built against a backdrop of ongoing racism and colonial legacies, the book’s premise is that just as racialised experiences have come to be through design, they can also be designed out.

“As Black women and women of colour in academia”, the pair write, “we do not have the luxury of ignoring the social construct of race and how this conditioned ideology crafts a narrative about us before we have even opened our mouths.”

They explain that in the predominantly white institutions they work in and the design industry at large, race has been “historically overlooked”, with the onus to address its issues “disproportionately charged” to non-white faculty and designers. As well as increasing the burden on these individuals, they say, it also means that “topics of racism then become siloed as a part of people of colour’s culture, rather than an issue that affects all of us.”

06/01/2024

There are two types of creativity: there’s intellectual creativity and there’s emotional creativity. We get really, really good at the intellectual creativity part because that is creativity for the sake of solving problems. As creatives we love solving problems! We love solving problems with ideas, and then we love channelling our artistic talent to manifest that solution in the world. We spend most of our life in that intellectual creativity space.

“But there’s another part of us – this emotional creativity – that needs to be addressed. It’s how we express our own authentic voice in the world. Who are we? What do we stand for? What do we believe in? If we don’t give that part of ourselves an outlet, that emotional creativity, well, guess what happens? We get stuck. There’s that emotional part of ourselves that wants to express itself. Wants to flow.”
