11 years ago tonight the good folk of Christchurch and Canterbury went about their normal Friday night routines, young folk out and about enjoying the early spring nightlife, older folk readying themselves for bed - nothing could have prepared us for what Mother Nature was about to unleash upon us at 04:35 in the early hours of that Sept Saturday Morning and little did we know that that was only the start of a sequence of life changing events.

Canterbury DHB is advising people with acute ophthalmology (eye) conditions to still seek the care they need. In addition, those with scheduled injection appointments with our Ophthalmology service should still attend their appointments following Alert Level 4 guidelines.

Canterbury DHB has reinstated its no-visitor policy across all facilities in line with the Government’s Alert Level 4 lockdown announcement. Apart from the Ophthalmology advice mentioned above, unless you have been contacted by phone to advise that your outpatient appointment or planned (elective) surgery is going ahead, please assume it has been postponed and do not turn up at hospital. Masks or face coverings must be worn at all times at Canterbury DHB sites and will be provided if people don’t have them.

Hand sanitiser stations are visible and must also be used.

❄️ WEATHER UPDATE ❄️We're expecting some very cold and windy conditions to hit the city over the next couple of days. There's a good chance of snow flurries for parts of the city between 3am and 10am tomorrow, especially for southern parts of the city. The morning commute cold be an icy one in places. Dyers Pass Road will likely be an issue. Keep safe, and make sure to allow extra time if you're travelling.

Today 👉 A few showers expected (totals less than 2mm) and west-southwest wind kicking in around midday with gusts reaching over 80km/h for higher parts of the Port Hills and Banks Peninsula.

Tomorrow 👉 Icy showers (totals around 10mm) especially for southern and eastern parts of the city. Expect sleet/hail/snow until around 10am with light accumulation in some parts of the city. We're expecting around 2-4cm of snow for higher parts of the Port Hills and west of Cashmere. Southwest wind gusts over 80km/h for the city and upwards of 120km/h for the Port Hills and Banks Peninsula. This is expected to ease in the afternoon.

CCC has been having some issues with the waste water system on the following streets in Shirley: Warden Street, Cargill Place, North Parade, Hope Street and Hercules Street.

The Council has had sucker trucks out in Shirley to help with the situation, but for the next 24 hours residents in the area are asked to avoid doing washing, and to flush toilets only when absolutely necessary.

**FLOOD UPDATE 4.50PM MONDAY 31 MAY**

Tides:

High tide is between 9.15 and 9.30 tonight and is expected to be lower than the previous tides. We would expect to see surface flooding to continue in areas where this is already happening, but we don't expect to see flooding in new areas overnight.

Banks Peninsula:

Residents in the Akaroa Harbour area are still being asked to conserve water, this is particularly critical around Duvauchelle. We are asking residents in Duvauchelle to only use water for essential purposes. The flooding in Akaroa has receded after the major stormwater pipe was unblocked however there is still flooding and slips in other parts of the Peninsula so anyone travelling in that area should exercise extreme care.

Wastewater overflows:

We are aware that a few properties are experiencing issues with their wastewater pipes overflowing. This is due to the increased demand on the system from the stormwater. We suggest waiting for the floodwaters to recede as it is likely the problem will resolve itself.

Kerbside collection:

Our contractor wasn't able to complete some of our kerbside collections today. The following streets were missed:

• Clarendon Tce
• Richardson Tce
• Sheldon St from #18 to Clarendon Tce
• Tavender St from #10 to Clarendon Tce

When these roads reopen, please put your bins out again and our contractor will return to empty them.

If your bins are due to be emptied on Tuesday, please put them out as usual, before 6am. If you are living on a road that is currently closed, still put your bins out for collection, if possible, as our contractors will empty them when the roads are re-opened.

Upper Heathcote basins:

Stormwater basins are being managed in the Upper Heathcote area. We are currently discharging floodwater from Curlett’s Basin. Earlier we were discharging from Wigram Basin but we have now stopped this.

We are alternating discharging between the two basins on the outgoing tide.

Pumps in Southshore:

Thank you to the community members who have been in touch regarding the pumps stopping and starting. We are keeping a close eye on the pumps and have contractors out there regularly to make sure they are working as they should.

Unfortunately we’ve had a couple of instances where the pumps have been deliberately stopped and the discharge pipes decoupled and dragged back into the streets. The Police will be increasing their presence in the area to help us ensure the pumps aren’t tampered with overnight.

Should there be any further updates this evening or overnight they will be posted on our Newsline rolling blog:

Important update about Monday's kerbside collection.

We’re advising people who have a kerbside collection scheduled for Monday, to put their bins out tomorrow morning before 6am, rather than overnight, if possible.

This is due to weather conditions and to avoid bins blowing over with potential high winds overnight.

If your street is closed due to flooding and you have a kerbside collection scheduled for Monday, please do not put your bins out until your street has re-opened. Our Resource Recovery (Kerbside Collection) staff will organise for your bins to be collected.
