Presenting the finalists for 🌟THE POETS 🌟

MayaSpoken is an award winning spoken word artist, singer-songwriter, educator, author, activist, speaker and single mother. Her voice has graced platforms such as TEDx, WE Day, Historica Canada, CBC Arts: Poetic License and more. Maya is the author of poetry novel Warriors in Broad Daylight and is also the founder of Spoken in the City Poetry Slam, Tell ‘Em Girl Women’s Spoken Word Showcase and Loud Black Girls, all platforms giving Ottawa poets the space to be themselves unapologetically.

Presenting the finalists for 🌟THE POETS 🌟

Marisa Gold is an intuitive multidisciplinary artist with a passion for all things soulful. She is an expressive dancer, poet, vocalist, choreographer, stylist, and actor whose work is embedded in self reflection, a deep love for humanity and reverence for our planet earth. Marisa has trained in a variety of Modern/Contemporary styles, with a BFA in dance (SFU), certificate of completion from The Ailey school Independent Study program (NYC), and The Graham school Intensive(NYC). Her professional experience ranges from modern/contemporary concert dance to experimental street style performance, and musical theatre productions to film and TV work.

As a poet Marisa has performed spoken-word at various slams across BC and most recently she has released a handmade hardcover poetry book which is currently available as a special addition.

Marisa's artistic influences are strongly rooted in the heart space of her ancestors. She feels powerful and expensive when she remembers all who have come before her in artistic and self-expression. As a writer, mover, designer and performer, Marisa continues her poetic wandering; delving further with love into the mystery of our collective humanity as well as her own.

Presenting the finalists for 🌟THE POETS 🌟

The Poetically Organized Entity (P.O.E.), or James Owen Brown; is a poet from Niagara Falls Ontario. He is a two-time slam poetry provincial champion. He has competed nationally at the Canadian Festival of Spoken word twice and been a semi-finalist. He has been a finalist at the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam and was the first ever winner of Last Poet Standing. In 2012 P.O.E. won the coveted title of Grand Slam Champion of Toronto as well as the Champion of Champions Cup and in 2014 he won the Toronto International Poetry Slam. He has released two chapbooks of poems called "More Poetiker Than Ever" and "The Most Poetickest Yet.” Typically, P.O.E.'s style is very intense and aggressive. His hip hop background comes through in most pieces and his use of pop culture references to help clarify the abstract has made him a southern Ontario favourite.

Warda Youssouf is an Artist, Filmmaker and Arts Organizer living in Toronto. Born in Djibouti and raised in the UK, she is a Self-taught Artist. Warda graduated from POV3rdst Media training program then OYA emerging filmmaker program and most recently ArtworksTO. She was the recipient of the David Maltby Award in 2019 for her exhibition “Roots” , and of a Toronto Refugee Mentorship Grant, to help develop her first feature film, People from Nowhere. Her practice is engaged with themes of home, identity, and displacement. She spent almost a decade engaging her local communities through curating story-telling shows and art therapy events. During the pandemic, she created House Of Arts a space for emerging creatives to showcase, develop and create a community. In November 2022, she took on her most ambitious project with the support from Toronto Art Council. Organising a 3-day festival celebrating BLACK Excellence through film, stories and music.

Kay Kassirer (they/them) is a spoken word poet currently residing on the unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations - colonially known as Vancouver. Their autobiographical poetry focuses on gender & s*xuality, grief, disability, and s*x work.

Kay has toured internationally performing at venues like Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, the Bowery Poetry Club, Busboys and Poets, Write About Now, and Hillside Festival. They have competed at over a dozen national and international poetry slam festivals earning their place on several competitive final stages. Notably, Kay placed 2nd at Capturing Fire International Q***r Slam (2016) while representing Hot Damn! It's A Q***r Slam, and 3rd at both the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word (2018) and the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam (2019) while representing Vancouver Poetry Slam.

Kay Co-Founded and Directed Voices of Today, a poetry festival run by youth for youth (2017-2020), and sat on the SpeakNorth Board of Directors (2016-2020). They curated and edited ‘A Whore’s Manifesto: An Anthology of Writing and Artwork by S*x Workers’ published by Thorntree Press. Their work has been featured on Button Poetry, Slamfind, Voicemail Poems, and The Rusty Toque.

Lisa Shen is one of seven incredible poets who will be moving on to the finals round on December 30th on .

Lisa Shen (she/her) is a writer and spoken word artist based in Toronto, Canada. Her work centers on feminism and gender-based violence, with secondary focuses on Chinese-Canadianism, disability, and q***r identity. Lisa was the winner of the 2021 Mississauga Poetry Slam and the 2022 Ink Movement Slam, as well as a Speaker at TEDx McMasterU 2022. She has featured at arts festivals and events across the GTA, including Hamilton Youth Poets and the JAYU Human Rights Film Festival. She is the Founder and Director of Sauga Poetry, and is dedicated to uplifting spoken word in the GTA through courses, workshops, and community events.

Lucia de Luca is one of seven incredible poets who will be moving on to the finals round on December 30th on .

As an English teacher and spoken word artist, Lucia plays with stories in the classroom and on the mic. Her poetry nods to past versions of herself or centers around her family and Italian heritage. Lucia is a recipient of the 2022 QWF Spoken Word Prize and was a finalist at the 2021 Canadian Individual Poetry Slam. As an organizer, she brought McGill University its first-ever slam (2020) and oversaw the Grove Campus Poetry Show (2022). Her work is published to the TEDx, Brickyard Spoken Word, Toronto Poetry Slam, and Bankstown Poetry Slam YouTube channels, as well as in online and print publications. She is completing an M. A. in Educational Leadership.
