On the early morning hours of August 28, 2007, copper thieves broke into Earl Thelander’s country property in Onawa, Iowa, stealing the copper from the propane and water lines in the basement. When he arrived at the home between 8:30 and 9 the next morning, he could smell propane coming from the home. After contacting law enforcement, during the investigation, tire tracks were found in the yard suggesting the vehicle was a smaller truck. However, the tire tracks were not casted and fingerprints were not taken from the entry point. Local law enforcement had told them that no one within the Sheriff Office or Police Department was qualified to extract fingerprints. Around 11:30 am, Earl returned to the property to see how the investigation was going. The property was empty, no law enforcement, no fire department, no yellow tape. This would mean that the property was okay for entry and there was no danger after the propane leak. Earl decided to resume the work he went out that morning to do. When Earl plugged in a fan to dry up the basement, he was flown through the basement due to an explosion. Earl managed to crawl his way out of the basement and drove two miles to his wife. He was rush to the local hospital, where he was transferred by Life Flight to UNMC Burn Unit in Omaha, Nebraska. Earl would pass away on September 1, 2007
