Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, started the new year with the arrest of a wanted drug kingpin and Lagos socialite, 61-year-old Alhaja Aishat Feyisara Ajoke Elediye on Wednesday 1st January 2025 in her mansion at Okota area of Lagos following the interception of a truckload illicit drug consignment from her staff same day.

Known in the drug underworld as “Iya Ruka”, Alhaja Ajoke as she is fondly called in social circle, has her true identity shrouded in mystery for years while she remained on the wanted list of NDLEA for leading one of the drug cartels operating from Mushin area of Lagos. The lid was however blown off her invincibility on Wednesday 1st January 2025 when NDLEA operatives acting on intelligence intercepted a white Izuzu truck carrying 44 jumbo sacks containing 1,540 kilograms of imported cannabis and driven by one of her staff, 41-year-old Abideen Adio.

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has rejected the Federal Government’s request to resume his trial, maintaining that Justice Binta Nyako, who previously recused herself from the case, must not preside over it.

In September 2024, Justice Nyako stepped down from the case following Kanu’s oral application, stating his loss of confidence in her impartiality. “I hereby recuse myself and remit the case file back to the chief judge,” she said at the time.

However, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, returned the case file to Nyako, arguing that Kanu’s request should have been made formally through a motion on notice.

Pope Francis will open the Holy Year of the Catholic Church in St. Peter’s Basilica on Tuesday evening.

In a solemn ceremony on Christmas Eve, the 88-year-old pontiff will open the Holy Door, which is otherwise walled up from the inside, and pass through it.

The Catholic Church normally celebrates a Holy Year, also known as a Jubilee Year, every 25 years.

According to Catholic belief, believers can gain forgiveness of their sins through prayer and penance during a Holy Year.

This also includes a pilgrimage to Rome and passing through Holy Doors in the Eternal City.

Catholics can obtain a special grace known as a plenary indulgence, which removes all temporal punishment for sin if requirements are met.

More than 30 million pilgrims and visitors are expected in the Italian capital during the Catholic event, with some estimates as high as 45 million

Francis will then celebrate the traditional Christmas mass, ringing in the Vatican’s Christmas festivities.
