crew appreciation post. Sound has always been one of the most challenging yet rewarding parts of our movie musical making process. Majority of the songs on Spit Me Out were recorded live with 15 cast members by our incredible sound team.
Smiles! Camera! Action!
With 15 cast members of Spit Me Out, we never missed out on having fun when it came to breaks. We had time to laugh, stretch, do vocal warm ups, and talk about everything and anything in the world. Nothing bounds you like a film set.
Had such a wonderful experience screening YOU DON’T SAY with our cast and crew last week. Thank you all for making movie musical magic! Can’t wait to share it with the world!!
Thanks to all the contributors who supported our musical short film, You Don’t Say (formerly known as In Other Words). We can’t wait for you to receive the bookmarks we designed, and we hope you enjoy a sneak peak of the film!
“Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other”…
That’s a wrap on Day 1 y’all!🤠
Our parishioner Dorris will be played by Maura M. Knowles, who is a versatile actor-singer-writer-producer whose projects include the development of her original musical comedy online series Insult to Injury; “Francis Ford Coppola’s Gidget”; the award-winning New York rock musical “Bare”, and her recent appearance in the final season of the hit musical TV series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015).
Arianne Villarea, playing Jesleen Rey, got their BA in Theatre/Music in Indianapolis, and went on to work extensively on Equity stages throughout the Midwest. Shifting their focus more to film and television, she relocated to Los Angeles and we are so glad they did!
Jesleen’s fiance Abel, will be portrayed by Joey Navarrete-Medina. Joey is a first-gen q***r Mexican American dance artist based in Los Angeles. Joey (He/they) is all about mixing his diverse background into contemporary dance.
More about our parishioners!
Mitchell Gerrard Johnson will be playing Elijah in Spit Me Out. As a singer, actor, and performer, Mitchell considers themselves a Jack (and Jill) of all Trades.
Victor E. Chan, known for The Crier, Dog Bowl (2015) and Association (2013), will be playing Fonso in Spit Me Out.
Fonso’s wife Prudence will be portrayed by Liz Eldridge, who is an actor, writer, multi-instrumentalist & a stand up performer.
Now it’s time to introduce our parishioners.
Our Sammy Anne will be played by the legendary Lauren Peterson who is a classically trained actor, dancer and yogi. They have been lauded on stage and screen. At the historic Orpheum Theatre, Lauren played three roles in the stage version of “Hairspray”.
The grandchild of Sammy Anne will be portrayed by Rhiannon Lewis, who is a singer-songwriter, actor, and composer. Rhiannon has been the receiver of awards and acknowledgments for their writing and performing, such as ShowSearch (2019 winner - college) and the Irene Ryan Scholarship (2018 nominee).
Analia Romero, playing Lantana, has played Old Sally/Ensemble in 5Star Theatricals production of Oliver! Additionally, she played Doc in Teatro San Diego’s production of West Side Story. Analìa holds an M.M. in Afro-Latin music from Cal State L.A. and a B.A. in Music from Northern Arizona University. When she isn’t performing she loves teaching World Music.
Meet our Edwin: Kasper. Kasper is an LA based non-binary actor/singer/musician. Most recently, they played the titular role in Amina (prod. Lena Waithe/Hillman Grad) which premiered at Tribeca, and screened before Jordan Peele’s Nope in theaters nationwide.
Tedwin in Spit Me Out will be played by Ezra Reaves. Ezra is an actor, singer, comedian, director and writer. He self identifies as “just a nice jewish boy from the south”, and we think you’re gonna love their character.
Joan-Joan will be played by Daya Curley. You may recognize Daya from A Transparent Musical, where she played Maura Pfefferman. Daya also happens to be a Previous Guinness World Record Holder (“Most Roller Coasters Ridden in a 24-Hour Period”), and we think the rollercoaster of emotions she will take us on in Spit Me Out will be unforgettable!
You know you want to praise the lord when your pastor is… Becca Blackwell. Becca is a trans actor, performer, and writer who is known for Marriage Story (2019), Bros (2022) and As Schmerm as It Gets (Short 2021), as well as their play “They, Themself and Schmerm.” We can’t wait for you to see them preach in Spit Me Out.
We couldn’t be more excited to announce that Ilia Isorelýs Paulino () will be playing Bev in Spit Me Out! Ilia is an actress and writer, known for Me Time (2022), Queenpins (2021) and One Piece (2023).
It’s time to announce our cast for Spit Me Out! Tova Katz (she/they) is a q***r, genre-bending writer, lyricist-composer, and performer. They also wrote, composed and star in the musical. How cool is that?!
Location scouting is one of the most fun parts of filmmaking. So many surprises. So much potential. So much possibility! Now we move on to limitations, bargaining, and sacrifices!
We are excited to announce a new project we are cooking up—and we need your help to bring it to life! is directing a short film written by and starring and called IN OTHER WORDS.
We’re crowdfunding $5,000 on Indiegogo to help us pay for crew, cast, equipment, props, costumes, insurance, food, travel, and more. Please consider contributing! Even a tiny contribution will help greatly, as the more contributors we have, the more likely we will be promoted on the site. LINK IN BIO!

Yup, it's a VERY REAL category of the Academy Awards, but since it's inception in 2000, it has never been activated! See the requirements and read all about how attempted to activate the category in 2004, in the newest issue of Rooster R***e. https://mailchi.mp/thebarn/best-original-musical
“Pocahontas” is a problematic movie with some really beautiful songs. The Department of Cinemusicalization is here to take an objective look at how the music serves the story.
1 - “The Virginia Company”
Similar to “Fathoms Below” from The Little Mermaid, this is a “Welcome to the World” song from the point of view of the film's antagonistic forces. It sets up how they think of the “New World,” a place you can “pluck gold off a tree”—and that it’s promised to them by virtue of “Glory and God.”
Where this song succeeds is in injecting a sentiment of doubt in the lyrics with the line “or so we have been told by the Virginia Company.” Already we are sensing that maybe this company should not be trusted.

We have 4 DAYS LEFT in our campaign to support our short musical film, IN OTHER WORDS! Thanks to all who helped us reach our initial goal of 5K, but now we need help with our post-production stretch goals (below). LINK IN BIO to contribute! $6,000—VFX Help make the magical bookstore a little more magical. An additional 1K to the budget will allow us to hire an additional VFX artist to bring some of our director’s shots to life. $7,000—Festival Submissions We want the world to see the movie and for short films this means festivals. Each application can be anywhere from $30 to $100 and this adds up. On our last short we ended up spending $1000 on festivals. $8,000—Festival Travel We’d love to be able to bring our cast to the festival premiere! This is great for promotion of the film, which helps us get distribution. This $1,000 will help with airfare and lodging. $9,000—Record with live instruments! The score by Sam Balzac is incredible. An additional 1K would allow it to shine with real orchestration and live musicians. $10,000—Release a Soundtrack These songs are so great we know you’ll want to hear them over and over again. If we make it to $10,000 we’ll be able to afford to record, mix, master, and release the official In Other Words Soundtrack. Featuring: @ajfreeman727 and @sambalzac
