The 2022 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to jailed Belarusian activist Ales Bialiatski, Russian rights group Memorial, and Ukraine's Center for Civil Liberties. In the past, several African personalities, including Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege, Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee, former Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former South African President Nelson Mandela, as well as Kenyan environmental activist the late Wangari Maathai, have received the honor.
