The man that pulled me off the streets and into gaming when I was too young to realize how evil I was but old enough to know better has gone to God. He taught me more about how to be a man than anyone else in my life. Everyone else just saw a thug but he saw a friend in need. When I heard he was rushed to the hospital last week it honestly felt like just a few weeks had passed but when I checked the phone the last time we talked was in April on my birthday. Time passes quickly and in the end we only have the time we choose to make for each other.

I hope he knows he made a difference and how important he was to a young man who just needed help finding his way.

To the father, American patriot and Desert Storm veteran, and the man who taught me then fell victim to the hallowed plasma punch, we will meet again. 🫡

These guys jumped me in the spawn at the dirt airstrip and I hit their ATV with a JOKR and let them leave the first time. So I get to the city center and notice an MRAP following my exact path. So I gave it two rounds with the JOKR. The first one to destroy the vehicle and the second to down everyone in it. And what do I see? The same name of the guy I downed at the airstrip.

The rest of their team came from the other side of the tower so I stole their APC and got downed by another team then saved when I told them I blew up the MRAP and the other team was coming for me. He even gave back my stealth vest 🤓

All that in 9 minutes 😆

It was the same two who tried jumping me at the spawn. I took out their ATVs there and let them go. Think of it as karma for trying to spawn kill me lmaoh...

This upgraded Powermac G3/G4 is a reminder of those better days and I keep it as a tribute to the man who taught me the fine art of building PCs. I bought it at a school auction for $5 and piece by piece I upgraded it. First I overclocked the G3 processor from 300mhz to a respectable 350 and added a fan and heat sinc I dug out of the trash behind the local repair shop. Then I figured out how to use iMac RAM as VRAM in an old PCI Radeon card from my utterly destroyed PowerMac 9200…32mb became 8mb VRAM. Then it became the formidable beast it was…1ghz PowerPC G4, 128mb Radeon 9200, 584mb RAM, DVD-R MacOS X 10.4.11/9.2.2 at the sacrifice of bus speed…I dropped from 100mhz to 66. I upgraded it piece by piece with the end result being entire weekends spent playing Command & Conquer Generals with the big boys who had real G4s and G5s. It’s a trophy of those golden days of gaming when you had to know what you were doing to be a gamer. The days when your friends brought their computer over and you used a printer cable to connect to a makeshift network because you either couldn’t afford a router or your machine didn’t have Ethernet capabilities. The days when you smoked trash seedy bud out of a crushed coke can and downed the worst substance known to man…Mad Dog 20/20…like you spent your last $4 on it and didn’t have any money to eat…because you no longer had enough money to eat.

I was browsing my timeline today and suddenly realized that I hadn’t heard or seen anything from someone in a while. We will call him Roger for the sake of having a name. Roger has been sick with stage 3 cancer and fighting hard…it’s the risk you took when you opened up PCs in the 90s and early 2000s. Roger introduced me to the Marathon series and brought me computer parts he swiped from work where he was the professional geek. That morphed into a friendship and him teaching me how to fix and build PCs. We ended up being roommates…a year of 24/7 gaming. We drilled holes in the wall to run 100baset lines and played Command & Conquer on a bunch of old 603e PowerMacs over an appletalk network while sipping trash malt liquor and inhaling copious amounts of w**d. We played until our rigs died and then we went dumpster diving behind the PC repair shops for “new” parts to get back up and running. We hosted Xbox Halo parties where everyone brought their Xbox to our house and we linked that s**t and went to war. Eventually life took its usual turn and I had a family and we saw each other less and less until we lost touch. I missed my friend and thought of him daily. Even more so I missed Roger when I was gaming offline, playing the games he burned to CD for me. He definitely shaped my life and was a guiding force as I now work hands on with technology. If it wasn’t for him I would still be the thug I was back then. Not only that but I made bank off of the things he taught me. He did more to raise me in those 3 years than anyone ever had.

At that point in my life I was suffering from the unique brand of Midwest-US racism badly and he was the first white in my life to never judge me by my looks. I had never experienced that before. When we met he invited me over and we played PS2 and drank and vibed out with the music cranked. We did that s**t every day after work. He was my fu**in dog.

I was happy to see that he was active on messenger 9 hours ago and sent him some messages to let him know he’s still my friend and always will be even if I’m absent. I don’t think he knows the impact he had on a young man’s life. He was either a father figure or the older brother I never had. I’m still trying to figure that part out.

This is a reminder to always check up on your gamer friends. If I don’t hear from you for a while and we’re online together a lot I’m going to try to track you down. Maybe we haven’t met personally and maybe you’re busy or you got rid of your system. Maybe you just don’t have time anymore. But if you’re my friend you’re my friend and gamer friends are real friends too.
