December 3rd is celebrated as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, worldwide. The day is observed to highlight issues that affect people with disabilities and to champion their well-being, their dignity and fundamental rights. International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated to encourage increased assimilation of persons with disabilities in the socio-political, economic and cultural aspects of life. The goals fall under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2022: Theme

The theme of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, this year, is “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world“. The 2022 celebration will focus on the need for innovative solutions to help create an inclusive developmental model to aid people with disabilities.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2022: History

In 1976, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 1981 as the International Year of Disabled Persons (IYDP). On February 6, 1981, US President Ronal Reagan did the same. Then the UNGA declared 1983-1992 as the decade of Disabled Persons. The adoption of December 3 as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities happened during the UNGA’s 37th plenary meeting, on October 4, 1992.

What is Disability?
Disability is a complex and multifaceted concept. Its meaning differs across the territories along numerous associated legal political and social constructs. Disabilities such as physical challenges, acid attacks or dwarfism are easy to identify but the disabilities like mental illness, specific learning disabilities, hearing impairments or autism are comparatively difficult and complex to identify without appropriate training. Hence disability is more complex where we lack the symptoms or have minimum visual manifestations that can easily be identified by the parents, teachers and the general society. Disability, in simple terms, is a physical or mental condition or both that limits individuals movement, activities or sense of perception.

India’s first line of Defence, Border Security Force (BSF), celebrates its Raising Day on 1 December every year. BSF was established on 1 December 1965 for ensuring security on the borders of India. Currently, BSF comprises 2.65 lakh personnel, deployed across the international border in 193 battalions. BSF plays a crucial role in containing unauthorized entry into or exit from the territory of India and it prevents transborder crimes. It also works towards stopping illegal activities such as smuggling. BSF strives to promote a sense of security in people living in the border areas. When the earthquake occurred in Gujarat on 26 January 2001, BSF was the first one to reach out for helping distressed individuals.

History:

Pakistan attacked Sardar Post, Beria Bet, and Chhar Bet in Kutch on 9 April 1965. So, the Government of India decided to establish a specialised centrally controlled Border Security Force (BSF) which would be trained and armed for battling Pakistan on the international border. After the recommendations of the Committee of Secretaries, BSF was formed on 1 December 1965. Khusro Faramurz Rustamji was the first chief and founding father of this force.

Significance:

Here are some of the important roles that BSF has played:

BSF played a crucial role in defending the integrity of India during the Kargil war from May to July 1999.
BSF contributes its personnel for services in the United Nations (UN) mission each year.
BSF personnel helped in restoring brotherhood and amity among people during the communal disturbances in Gujarat.
Internal Security Duty is being performed by the BSF personnel in Manipur and they have been fighting insurgency in those areas for the last 2 years.
The er****on of the border fencing in Jammu and Kashmir was taken over by the BSF and it successfully completed the task while Pakistan was trying to create hurdles.
Celebration

This year, BSF will be celebrating its raising day for the first time in Punjab and second time outside Delhi. The rehearsal for the commemoration is going on in full-swing at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar.

Each year, International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People is commemorated on 29 November. The day is observed to educate the public on the issue of Palestine and support a peaceful settlement between Israelis and Palestinians. Since 2008, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has been keeping a track on the casualties in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As per its data, 5,600 Palestinians died till 2020, and 115,000 were injured in the long-running conflict. During the same period, 250 Israelis lost their lives and 5,600 were injured. The violence was especially high during 2014, when Operation Protective Edge in Gaza was conducted by the Israel in response to the kidnapping and murder of three teenagers, as per a report by Statista.

History:

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared 29 November to be observed annually as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in 1977. In 1947, UNGA had adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine on 29 November. On 14 May, 1948, the state of Israel was finally formed, causing an eight-month war between the country and the Arab states. Israeli forces razed more than 400 Palestinian villages and nearly 760,000 Palestinian refugees fled to the West Bank, Gaza and neighbouring Arab nations.

Since then, the issue has led to multiple wars between Israel and the Arab nations. Yet the Palestinian people have not been able to gain their own state.

Significance:

Every year, on this day, the international community reaffirms its solidarity with the people of Palestine, hoping for a future full of freedom and peace.

Palestinians have still to receive their inalienable rights as defined by the UN General Assembly, namely the right to national independence and sovereignty, right to self-determination without external interference, and right to return to their property and homes from which they have been displaced.

Every state in India organizes a number of awareness campaigns, camps, and activities on the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day to make people aware of the donation of blood. We also included a rundown of all the required details in this article that one should know before engaging in the blood donation program.

We also recognize that people differ in the form of blood they hold. The blood of a donor should match the blood of the recipient during a blood transfusion. So, in order to partake in the Voluntary Blood Donation scheme, you should have a good knowledge of your blood type.

Blood donation is really beneficial for all healthy people and is a must. The person who donates blood is willing to save the life of the person in need. In the new health care system, exchanging or giving blood or components of it to the poor has become an integral part of society. Who is the bloodline or recipient it doesn’t matter. Not only can you donate blood to your family or mates, but you should donate blood to another human being willing.

It may facilitate people living longer and enjoying a greater quality of life who suffer from life-threatening conditions.

If human struggles for his or her life and needs blood, no specialized technology, supplies, or medication can help. For blood, there is no alternative. It cannot be created or substituted. Only by another human being will it be obtained. Nothing can be better than saving someone’s life with the healthy body one has been given with.

The main objectives of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day are:

To inspire those donors who only donate blood to their families or friends to donate on a regular basis.
To raise awareness among individuals of the value of the voluntary donation of blood.
To give our thanks and strengthen the self-esteem of those who regularly donate blood, so that they continue to do so on a regular basis.
To inspire those who have not contributed blood, but are in good health, to continue to donate blood.
To reach 100% voluntary blood donation in order to be able to give the vulnerable people the finest blood.
To have ample blood supply for any eventuality in our blood banks.
Importance of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day
Blood is a crucial part of human life since it supplies the tissues and organs of the body with necessary nourishment. National Voluntary Blood Donation Day is celebrated to bring about the great changes in culture and follow life-saving steps and avoid severe illness caused by abuse and disease, problems involved with childbirth, road traffic collisions, and many other circumstances.

Tripura, the country’s North Eastern District, is considered to be India’s highest voluntary blood donation rating (93 percent), whereas Manipur is considered to be the country’s lowest.
