Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has dismissed a request filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) seeking a 14-day extended detention order for the suspended Central Bank Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele.

The DSS based its application on purported new evidence it had discovered, and the application was discreetly filed by the DSS’s legal team on Wednesday and came before the vacation judge today.

Justice Muazu dismissed the application, citing it as an abuse of court process and identifying the lack of jurisdiction.

A group, the Coalition of Protesters and Supporters, has demanded that the Lagos State Government conduct a DNA mapping on all the 103 corpses recovered in the wake of the October 2020 protest.

The coalition said the state should conduct the DNA mapping before proceeding with its planned mass burial for the 103 corpses.

The coalition also said the government should compensate the families of the victims and “provide therapy for the trauma they have caused their families over the last three years.”

The Federal Government has told the Nigeria Labour Congress that it is legally restrained from embarking on planned nationwide strike against the hike in the price of petrol and the high cost of living in the country.

NLC had given the government a seven-day ultimatum to reverse all what it called anti-poor and insensitive policies or face nationwide industrial action.

However, reacting to the ultimatum, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Justice, B.E Jedy-Agba, said the union was restrained by the order of the national industrial court from embarking on any strike regarding the removal of petrol subsidy.

She said the court had on June 5 granted an injunctive order restraining the NLC and Trade Union Congress “from embarking on the planned industrial action/or strike of any nature, pending the hearing and determination of the pending motion on notice”.

Jedy-Agba advised the union to explore other means of negotiations with the Federal Government rather than “resorting to self-help and undermining the orders of the court”.

Presidential spokesman, Dele Alake, in a statement on Wednesday, said some universities only recently announced “discretionary charges” for hostel accommodation, registration, laboratory, amongst others.

“They are not tuition fees,” he emphasized.

“For avoidance of doubts, federal universities in Nigeria remain tuition-free.”
Last week, some tertiary institutions including the University of Lagos (UNILAG) hiked their fees for new and returning undergraduate students. UNILAG especially hinged the move on what it described as the “prevailing economic realities”.

“It is also pertinent to note that the University has not increased its obligatory fees in recent years. Management, therefore, seeks the kind understanding and support of students and other stakeholders with the assurance of its commitment towards ensuring that students get the best learning experience.”

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has given the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to reverse all perceived anti-poor policies, including the recent hike in the pump price of petrol, or face an indefinite nationwide strike from August 2.

The union said the government’s recent actions, including the hike in the pump price of petrol, the increase in electricity tariff, and the planned removal of fuel subsidy, are insensitive to the plight of the poor and working people.

The NLC warned that if the government fails to meet its demands, it will embark on an indefinite nationwide strike from August 2.

The union also directed all its affiliates and state councils to immediately begin mobilizing workers and other Nigerians, including civil society allies, for a long-lasting strike and mass protests.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has approved the sum of ₩10,000 as palliative for civil servants and pensioners in the state to cushion the effect of the petrol subsidy removal.

Secretary to the state government, Tokunbo Talabi, noted the palliatives include ₩10,000 cash for each public servant, including pensioners, to enable workers to cope with the economic shocks occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy, for a period of three months, in the first instance.

The governor also approved hazard allowance for all health and medical personnel and the immediate release of letters of promotion in respect of 2021 and 2022.

He also approved payment of March and April, 2023 leave bonuses for public servants in the state and the immediate cash-backing for the quarterly payment of gratuities to pensioners.

The governor also directed ministries, departments and agencies to work out modalities of ensuring that 20 percent of their staff strengths are off-duty daily to ease the effect of recent increase in fuel price among public servants.

He also directed the Gateway Trading Company to establish food distribution outlets across the state, and sell the items at the rate obtainable in the market before removal of fuel subsidy.

To ease the transportation stress, the governor said the state would soon begin of conversion of state mass transit buses to gas (including staff buses and current public transportation buses in circulation) to reduce cost of transportation by charging rates comparable to what obtained before deregulation.

Civil society groups under the aegis of the Edo Civil Society Organisations have taken to the streets of Benin City, the Edo State capital, in protest against the recent hike in fuel prices.

They walked through some major streets and condemned the increase and the high cost of governance in Nigeria.
The protesters are piqued by what they described as an increment in the price of petrol amid penury.

According to them, the new National Assembly members are made to share huge sums running into billions of naira to improve their working conditions while the downtrodden groan under the new fuel regime.

Carrying placards with several inscriptions, the Edo civil society groups also rejected the proposed N8,000 palliative by the Federal Government following the removal of the petrol subsidy.

The Lagos State government has debunked reports of a planned mass burial for casualties of the 2020 protest and has clarified that the mass burial is for victims of violence.

Ogboye maintained that the 103 bodies were picked up after the violent protests and other clashes at Fagba, Ketu, Ikorodu, Orile, Ajegunle, Abule-Egba, Ikeja, Ojota, Ekoro, Ogba, Isolo and Ajah areas of the state, as well as a jailbreak at Ikoyi prison.

There was a letter from the Lagos State Government Public Procurement Agency, ‘Letter of No Objection – Mass Burial for the 103, the Year 2020 ENDSARS victims’, permitting the burial of the victims.
But Ogboye accused mischief makers of misinterpreting the letter to misinform the public, stir public sentiment and cause public disaffection against the Lagos State government.

The statement reads: “It is public knowledge that the 2020 crisis that snowballed into violence in many parts of Lagos recorded casualties in different areas of the state and NOT from the Lekki Toll Gate, as being inferred in the mischievous publications.

“The 103 casualties mentioned in the document were from these incidents and NOT from Lekki Toll-gate as being alleged. For the avoidance of doubt, no body was retrieved from the Lekki Toll Gate incident”.

Subsidy removal: MURIC appeals to Nigerians for patience

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has appealed to Nigerians to be patient to ensure they reap the long-term gains of the current economic policies.
The group’s Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, made the appeal in a statement on Friday in Lagos.

“The deregulation of the oil sector of the Nigerian economy which has been hailed by experts as a wise step must come with a price. It has necessitated the determination of prices of petroleum products by global market forces.

This implies that even the Nigerian government can no longer fix the prices of petroleum products and it was not responsible for the latest increase from N488 to N617."

“The good news is that we have a sensitive administration that has shown concern for the plight of the common man,” he said.

He added that the president had declared that the poor must not be strangulated by the current hardship, and he appealed to Nigerians to rally behind the Tinubu administration to endure and patiently wait for the palliatives.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of an Infrastructure Support Fund (ISF) for the 36 states.
A statement by the president’s spokesman Dele Alake said the approval was disclosed at the monthly meeting of the Federation Account Allocation Committee on Thursday in Abuja.

He said the new Fund would enable states to intervene and invest in the critical areas of transportation, including farm-to-market road improvements, agriculture, livestock, and ranching solutions.

Other areas are health, education, power, and water resources to improve economic competitiveness, create jobs and deliver economic prosperity for Nigerians.

He also mentioned that the committee resolved to save a portion of the monthly distributable proceeds to minimize the impact of the increased revenues occasioned by the subsidy removal and exchange rate unification-on money supply, as well as inflation and the exchange rate.

He said out of the June distributable revenue of N1.9 trillion, only N907 billion would be shared among the three tiers of government, while N790 billion would be saved, and the rest for statutory deductions.

He explained that these savings would complement the efforts of the ISF and other existing and planned fiscal measures aimed at ensuring a tangible improvement in the lives of Nigerians.

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has ordered the DSS to grant the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in the custody of the DSS since June 2021 for terrorism-related charges, access to a medical doctor of his choice on grounds that he requires urgent ear surgery amidst his reported failing health.

Justice Nyako also ordered the secret police to monitor, record and seal all medical sessions administered on the IPOB leader, for security purposes.

The trial judge also dismissed the preliminary objections filed by the DSS challenging the application before it, on grounds that Kanu has the right to medical services even in detention.
The court, in its judgment, also ordered that all Kanu’s medical records be made available to the IPOB leader.

PDP made its stand known in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, on Wednesday in Abuja.

“Our party insists that the N617 per liter of fuel is excessive, unacceptable, and cannot be justified under any guise. This is especially given the economic potentials and prospects within our country,” he said.

He said that; with a deft, transparent, and innovative management of resources, economic potentials, national comparative advantage, and expanded value chain in refining capacity, the price should not be more than N150.

Ologunagba said that the rising cost of fuel has worsened the economic conditions of Nigerians, and charged the APC-led administration to seek ways to stabilize and grow the economy. He explained that the situation had forced businesses and production to shut down, make citizens lose their jobs, and crippled commercial and social activities.

According to him, millions of families can no longer afford their daily needs as the cost of food, medication, and other essential goods and services continue to skyrocket.

The PDP scribe said that this was not the country that Nigerians yearned and voted for.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state emergency on the country’s four refineries.
IPMAN’s Chairman in Rivers State, Dr. Joseph Obele, said bringing back the refineries would surely reduce the price of fuel and ameliorate the suffering of the masses.

He said: “We saw a new buying rate on the NNPC portal. The previous buying rate was ₩487.7 per litre.
The new buying rate going forward is ₩567.7 per litre. The new selling rate is ₩600, ₩610, ₩620 and above.

“It is going to bring hardship to the citizens and marketers will need to source for additional trading capital in order to remain in the business. The Nigerian economy is going and the inflation index will further rise.
Our solution is fixing Nigeria's refineries, Mr. President should declare a state of emergency on Nigeria refineries”.

The House of Representatives on Wednesday rejected a motion to stop the increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) known as Petrol and revert to the old price of N537 per liter.
Rather, the House resolved to investigate the sudden increase in the price of premium motor spirit and the resultant increase in transport fares across the country.

The House said since it has already resolved to investigate the increase, it will amount to pre-empting the work of the investigative committee by ordering the suspension of the price increase.

In a motion of urgent public importance by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, the House asked the Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, and oil marketers to appear before an ad hoc committee to explain the increase.

The ad hoc committee is also finding ways to ensure the effective distribution of palliatives to Nigerians to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.

19/07/2023

President Bola Tinubu has directed an immediate review of the proposed N8,000 conditional cash transfer program to ease the harsh effects of the fuel subsidy removal.

President Tinubu has also directed the immediate release of fertilizers and grains to about 50 million farmers and households respectively across the country, just as he has directed that the entire government’s palliative and relief package meant to ease the current harsh conditions be unveiled to Nigerians.

The President gave the directives in response to public reactions and feedback to the administration’s efforts at alleviating the harsh conditions that have trailed recent attempts at saving the economy from total collapse, one of which was putting an end to petrol subsidy.

The President’s directives were contained in a statement issued Tuesday evening by his Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communication, and Strategy, Mr. Dele Alake, who explained that Tinubu took the decision because he had promised to always listen and dialogue with Nigerians.

18/07/2023

Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), on Tuesday, explained that the sudden surge in the price of premium motor spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, was the function of market forces.
Petrol pump price, as observed in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, jumped from N540 to N617 per litre.⁣

The Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the NNPCL, Mr Mele Kyari, while speaking to journalists at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, explained that the jump observed at fuel stations was as a result of the market regulating itself.

He also argued that the increase is not based on a short supply of petrol, assuring that pricing will fluctuate from time to time, depending on activities at the international market.
