Happy Saturday! Having a fellow sis in medicine who is a true friend is invaluable. Keisha and I have been on this journey of growth together since 2009. We have cried on each other’s shoulders too many times to count. Whenever the other was down or didn’t see a way. We dug into our faith and helped to pray the other through it. We also remind each other of how far we have come. We are still working on alot of goals and enjoy sharing our journey. ❤️

Hey guys! Take a listen to our latest episode. We chat with the wonderful Yvette of . Check out her bio to learn more…….. My name is Yvette. I am a Congolese-American that was bitten with the travel bug when I was 4 years old. My parents are hardworking immigrants who made it a priority to take me and my brother somewhere every summer. Whether it was the beach in Florida or visiting family in Paris, France, we started to appreciate the cultural knowledge we received. I moved to Canada when I was 24 and started working for a travel agency. From there, it just really opened my mind to all the places there are in this world to visit. I didn’t know how I was going to get there but I had a vision board of all the places I really wanted to go to. Since then, I’ve now traveled to 25 countries and I plan on visiting more. During my adventures, I’ve grown to love bringing people with me throughout my travel journey.

Recently I attended a documentary screening of Aftershock by Paula Eiselt and Tonya Lewis Lee. As I watched this film I was overwhelmed and flooded with many emotions. African American woman have the highest mortality rate during childbirth and affected disproportionately. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend. I am very grateful to the organizers for bringing together a group of diverse health care providers with the common mission of decreasing morbidity and mortality for African American mothers.

What are some discussions that you feel need to be initiated for our mothers? Is having an OBGYN of the same race imperative? What do you think are solutions to this epidemic?

Pictured are amazing physicians and mothers who I am privileged to work with. Dr. Okwudi, anesthesiologist, Dr. Rogers, Maternal Fetal Medicine and Dr. Macaulay, OBGYN.

Saying “NO” should be an entire curriculum taught in school. Many of us struggle with this on the daily. But in order to achieve some semblance of balance we need to include it in our everyday vocabulary.
Establishing boundaries are essential … Just remember that the word NO is an entire statement. No explanation needed. Periodt.

Let’s discuss. 🎙

Helping others and giving to communities in need will always be apart of who we are and what we stand for. Growing up, I saw first hand the impact of marginalized communities with inadequate healthcare. I guess that’s why God has placed missions on my heart. I had the wonderful opportunity to go to Honduras to serve. This opportunity helped to ground me and helped me to remember why I went into medicine. Life can be really hard and work very stressful. We all sometimes get caught in what seems like an endless cycle of mundane things that doesn’t align with our purpose. That week I was able to walk in my purpose and receive affirmation from God that I am on the right track. Yes, I get frustrated with medicine and its politics but my love for helping others will never diminish. Keep pushing my friends. We do invaluable work when we show up for ourselves and our communities. 🇭🇳

In the movies and in life, we often don’t get to see what happens behind the scenes but are shown the finished products. Let’s not forget that it takes a significant amount of work, perseverance, and sacrifice to get to that point. The next time you judge yourself against someone’s highlight reel, put on your horse blinders and keep it pushing!

Hey y'all 👋🏾 hey!!! 👩🏽‍⚕️👩🏽‍⚕️ Let's have an awesome day today as we approach the new year. I just wanted to share a recent experience. I had the pleasure to be the Anesthesiologist for Dr. Sonya Ephraim, a Urogynocologist. UroGYN is a specialty that helps diagnose and treat pelvic floor conditions in females ( weak bladder, pelvic prolapse, urinary incontinence etc. ) This collaboration was definitely “Black girl Magic”✨✨✨. I don’t often have the opportunity to work with many African American surgeons. This was one of those rare occasions. She is such an amazing surgeon with a great sense of humor. Ladies... if your pelvic floor needs some attention, she is your doc! 🤩 Remember that Melanated Docs are necessary and representation matters. Be great and let's be excellent today.
