💥Obesity = Weight > What is normal for THEIR age and height

💥Weight = Diet - Physical Activity
(+ Genetic Factors + Health Conditions + Psychological factors + Socioeconomic factors)

⚖️It is the IMBALANCE between energy obtained from food and that which is used through activity and physical exercise

🍩🏃‍♂️Food and exercise are a huge part of maintaining and achieving healthy weight.

📶The first step in this - is being aware of what you or your child is eating. With everything having sugar in it to make it more appealing to customers, its quite tricky. The idea behind these posts have been only to highlight the hidden sugars

For example, did you know, ONE can of Coke, can fulfil a child’s sugar limit FOR THE DAY?😱😱

Below are the maximum amount of free sugars per day one should be having:

🧒🏻*Children*
Less than 4 ▶️ There’s no guideline on limit but it's recommended they avoid sugar-sweetened drinks and foods with sugar added to it.

Ages 4-6 ▶️ max 19g or 5 sugar cubes

Ages 7 -10 ▶️ max 24g or 6 sugar cubes

👩🏻*Adults*
max 30g or 7 sugar cubes

Snacking in the park, deliberately matching 🧡....

🤷🏻‍♀️Honestly, I don't see how it's possible to not be giving children, especially under 4s any sugar, esp when bread has sugar!

🤫There are some obvious no no's that we all probably know about. But its the hidden sugars that are probably more dangerous..

🍬The point is to know about the sugar (and salt) content of our favourite foods, and make those conscious decisions. It's like counting calories, if we know how many we are eating, we can restrict in other places. But if we don't even know how much sugar is in our food, we probably won't be encouraged to make those changes !

❓DO YOU THINK you KNOW the amount of SUGARS in YOUR food???
🤳Head on over to my stories where I've added a quiz on some of the popular foods!

▶️Remember, it's a marathon and not a sprint! Healthy lifestyle does NOT mean short term dieting or cutting out groups of food.

When a few of my patients gave birth during the pandemic, I couldn’t help but wonder how they were coping. With the lockdown in place in most countries, that meant not being able to see family or friends, or go out for a walk or exercise. They say it takes a village to raise a child.. that won’t be possible for awhile now.
I wrote this article with two things in mind :

1. Even though we are going through the pandemic, that doesn’t mean other health problems have gone away. Maternal Mental Health is still a very real issue that we should not sideline ESP now since the current climate is a strong risk factor for Post-Partum Depression e.g. isolation, lack of contact/support from friends or family, being diagnosed with Covid-19.

2. To talk specifically about the non-pharmaceutical treatments and write more about the resources and treatment options available, rather than “please see your doctor”

The bonus was, that .ly loved it and picked it up for Maternal Mental Health Month! Somehow, I felt slightly more useful. I hope it helps others understand more what PPD is, or how to help their loved ones, or what the other treatment options are.

Thank you to .ly and all the people who have messaged me, & shared this. I am so grateful for the appreciation and support.

People when the lockdown first started :
'Read one book a day'
'Lose the weight'
'Do everything you have always wanted too but haven't had time'
'Pick up a hobby'

It sounded good - to find a silver lining, and to make the most of all this 'free' time.

In theory, that sounded nice, but a few days in and I realized I really didn't have any extra time. I'm a mother and a GP. My work is nonstop except for the hours I sleep at night. Thank God both my boys are good sleepers!

Just so we're clear -
I can't read a book a day even if you paid me and I'm still trying to lose the weight and we are more than 2 months in!

That being said, even I was eager to try to take advantage of the lockdown, and I have. Through :
More quality & quantity family time
Sharing our chores
Developing my family and friend relationships
Enjoying my skin care routine every night
Starting a hair care routine
Baking more
Trying new recipes
Etc.

The other one thing I keep trying to do is try out my last pre-corona purchase, my Fuji XT-30.. in the last 5 years, I've swapped from using a Canon to Sony to Fuji.. the learning curve is steep on this one, and I've only been able to play around with it a few handful number of times..

📸☝🏻The last time when I took it out, he let me take a few pictures, and then was adamant that he must be the one to press the button (shutter).. Eventually, I couldn't use it without him.. So it's now hiding out in my drawer, out of his reach, and I'm thinking we might only end up learning together 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nature
We've been coming to this park almost everyday for the past few weeks. With our one form of exercise a day allowance, we've tried to use the time to go out as a family and escape. For a brief period, it feels like we're in a different place, a magical forest.. where if we try, we can really forget that anythings changed.

There is a wooden step near the lake, where Zayd likes to sit. He'll sit and then rummage through my canvas tote to see the snacks I've brought. He clocked on really quickly, knew after the first day where to look. Oranges, walnuts, water, puffs, and cheese - staples for his snack collection. But sometimes, a new find like grapes, strawberries or some rice. We sit there for a bit, mainly because I like to soak in the view, the sun, the heat if any. He likes to go up and down the step. We don't sit for long though, as Baba leads us onto the path, inside, to the covered trees, to run around in their shadows lining the lake. What a beautiful place we are in!

Last time we saw some robins, and the time before, a squirrel chasing around the trees - he's fascinated by the animals. 2 ducks and their ducklings, 3 and 6 respectively, paddle through the lake, "spring" my husband says a she nods towards them. We watch for a bit before Zayd finds a tree where he likes to play. We stand beneath it Its branches arching down to the ground and around us, creating a secret, magical, hidden place for us..

Eventually, we say goodbye. Goodbye to the trees, the animals, and make our way back home. Feeling slightly better, slightly more refreshed, slightly taken care of. It's surprising how powerful nature is.. how healing it is..

Time for the outdoors.
I would say that I’m naturally an outdoorsy type of person. I love going out night or day, love meeting friends/family and socialising in cafes (my fav spot is any with good coffee and pastries). I love playing sports (dramatically decreased since I started working though to be truthful). The only place I will willingly hibernate in, is my parents home, and its always been like that since going to boarding school when my parents were still in Saudi. I did love those summers and winters, where you could just go, and switch off from everything. Granted we had less technology then, but we had others things.

Growing up in Saudi with 3 brothers and parents who didn’t differentiate between boy and girl meant wherever my brothers went, i went, whatever they did, I did. IT was a great time. I spent most of my childhood playing sports, any and every kind. my earliest memories are probably of T-ball, and soccer. Then came basketball, volleyball, and American football(tag) and frisbee(also tag), the latter two were always great fun pass time.. la cross, track(which I always hated) and field events - discus, shot put, long jump. I loved being part of a team, and playing any sport alway made me happy. It wasn’t just me, I guess it was just the way our American Lifestyle in Saudi Arabia was set out.

Naturally.. after a one busy, but indoors-y day I just needed to get out to re-orientate myself. Half an hour before maghrib and just about caught a bit of daylight that day and it was enough. Enjoyed playing in the garden with my son and his footie, brought some silly childhood memories of me trying to play alongside my brothers and boys much older, and some from games I spent kicking one of my uncles legs (I knew eventually I’d get the ball hehe).

We stayed until sun had set, the sky was a misty grey and we were tired but happy before returning back indoors.

Day 7.
Zayd has been unwell since last week so we have been self-isolating since then. We’ve all seen how the pandemic has unfolded from December. There are many things that get me upset, and that are breaking my soul, not just my heart. The thought of maybe 1/4 of our population dying to this virus is just, unfathomable for me. As a medic, I feel so hopeless against this virus. Lack of adequate PPE, ITU beds, ventilators, not enough testing…

As the news content in my daily life has increased, and the realness of our current times is sinking in, I can’t help but feel more and more in despair. Not being able to work, makes me feel even more helpless in these times.

There are plenty of people, and pages like the that are updating everyone on new guidance and information - I dont feel like I need to be one of those, posting the same information when those are the best sources.. And please, if you are looking for guidance whether you are a medic or not, make sure your sources are legit, don’t start believing what Mr.Covid-19Instagrammer has to say about it, or Mrs..

With the self isolation and lockdown imminent, I think it’ll be important for ways to stay positive and motivated, and do things that heal our souls, are creative, and in some way, therapeutic for us.

So, if there is anything that can take your mind off of all this that is going on, do it. Limit screen time news time Covid-19 time. Practice more self care, self love. Read a book, or if you’re like me and short of time, a chapter. Mow that lawn, have a coffee in silence. Spend time with your loved ones, even if virtually.
