As I mentioned earlier in my stories, I get asked a lot whether or not it's necessary to own a camera to be a content creator nowadays.
⠀
I believe that shot worth a thousand words, so I made four and edited them in Photoshop:
1 and 3 made with A7iii + AD400 strobe flash light
2 and 4 made with iPhone XS Max + AD400 pilot light
⠀
I was particularly interested in shooting close-ups because certainly, we all know that iPhone can deliver a decent flat lay or a group shot. And I also wanted to make these shots with Myth Velvet lipstick, as, in my opinion, nothing is as equally stunning and classic as this lip product.
⠀
Tbh I was pretty surprised with the result that you can get with 2 yo phone. The difference would be a bit more visible on a bigger screen and without compression but, as you can see, it’s absolutely possible to shoot nice content with your iPhone, especially for the Instagram. To some extend, of course. The iPhone macro shot cannot be compared with the camera one, but the close up looks pretty solid to me👌.
⠀
The main thing that is important in the matter is in what capacity you will be creating content.
As an influencer, you can shoot with your phone, be compensated for your content, and successful.
However, as a product photographer, 99% of the time, you'll be expected to work with a camera.
⠀
Mainly because you'll be doing shoots not only for social media but also for websites, ads, and print. And all of these sources require the kind of quality only professional equipment can provide you with.
⠀
And answering the most common question: when it's time to upgrade to a camera,— I think that no answer will suit everyone.
⠀
I'm quite pragmatic and will say — when you have the necessary funds😅. Always invest in a camera that you can afford without debts, and you'll be good.
As for me, before I made , I was shooting content for one brand's Instagram account with my iPhone for a year before realizing that I was ready to move forward. @ Punavuori
