Final Fantasy XVI Has Been Delayed

Final Fantasy XVI was originally announced in September of last year. While there was uncertainty surrounding news during the Tokyo Game Show this year, which inevitably didn’t happen, The game's director, Naoki Yosh*ta, has now confirmed that the next big update, which was originally supposed to be before the end of this year, has been rescheduled for spring 2022.

In a statement on Twitter, Yosh*ta cited the necessity for remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic as one of the main reasons for the delay. Another big reason was that they actually needed to cancel "asset deliveries from our outsource partners." Yosh*ta stated that moving forward, the team will focus on the following:

1: Increase graphic resource quality.
2: Refining combat mechanics
3: Fleshing out individual battles
4: Fixing up cutscenes.
5: Graphical Optimizations

It appears that Bethesda has revealed that their latest game, Deathloop, will be released for Xbox Series X/S and possibly Gamepass. The game will be 50% off as part of both Steam and PlayStation's winter sales, according to a tweet from Bethesda's Twitter account. While the trailer confirms that the discount will end on January 5th, it also includes the following disclaimer: "Also available for PC. Other consoles will not be available until at least 9/14/22". This appears to indicate that the game will be released on Xbox Series platforms, Gamepass, and possibly the Nintendo Switch.

2021 Game Awards Announcements

The Game Awards wrapped up last night, and while games like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Final Fantasy XVI Online won the awards for Best Narrative and Best Ongoing Game, respectively, the Game of the Year award went to It Takes Two by Hazelight Studios.

Of course, while the awards given out during Geoff Keighley’s 2 ½ to 3-hour annual show are important, there are many new games announced each show. Here are five of the biggest games announced during this year’s awards show.

1: Star Wars Eclipse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cJpiOPKH14

While a remake of Knights of the Old Republic is coming next year and a yet-to-be-revealed Ubisoft game is in the works, Star Wars fans have another game to look forward to. Quantic Dream, the studio behind Heavy Rain and Detroit Become Human, is working on Star Wars Eclipse. The title's details are scarce, but it will be set several centuries before the Skywalker Saga in the "High Republic" era.

While the project is still in early development, according to the game’s website: “Star Wars Eclipse will be an intricately branching action-adventure game that can be experienced in multiple ways, putting the destinies of an array of playable characters in your hands. Your choices will be at the heart of the experience, as every decision can have a dramatic impact on the course of the story.”
So, while this seems to be a Star Wars video game with a Detroit Become Human-like structure, it remains to be seen how the Studio will evolve its formula.

2: Wonder Woman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyA8lnp9Tzg

While Su***de Squad: Kill the Justice League received a gameplay trailer during the show, DC fans were treated to a surprise teaser for a standalone Wonder Woman game by the veteran studio, Monolith, who developed Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and the F.E.A.R. franchises. Wonder Woman currently does not have a release date at the time of this writing.

3: Sonic Frontiers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRkKZG1z9PY

This project was initially teased during the Sonic Central 2021 presentation in May, and it only announced a 2022 release window. However, a new trailer shown off during the Game Awards, confirms that the game will be released during the holiday of 2022 and will be the first open-world game in the Sonic franchise.

4: Alan Wake II https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyJvCq4HvQ4

A sequel ten years in the making has been revealed to be Remedy’s first-ever survival horror game. Alan Wake II will be released in 2023 on the PS5, Xbox Series, and the Epic Games Store.

5: Cuphead DLC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bskUa1jX0Gg

The 1930’s cartoon-inspired bullet hell, Cuphead, is releasing the first DLC: Delicious Last Course, on June 30th, 2022, after several delays since its announcement back in 2019.

She will fight to unite the warriors of two worlds. You are Wonder Woman. In development by Monolith Productions, creators of the critically acclaimed Middle...

Last night, Sony released a new State of Play which focused on upcoming Third-Party games that are releasing between now and 2022.

Deathverse: Let It Die is a sequel to Super Trick Game’s roguelike: Let it Die, which was released in 2016. The sequel is a "multiplayer survival-action" game where players fight it out on a reality TV show called Death Jamboree. Although the sequel retains its publisher, GungHo Entertainment, it will not be co-developed by Suda 51’s studio, Grasshopper Manufacture.

SuperTrick’s take on the Battle Royale genre will feature an interesting cast of characters, including "Hunter-G", who looks like a member of the Mafia from an alternate universe. Deathverse: Let It Die will be released on PS4 and PS5 in spring 2022.

We Are OFK is a unique five-episode biopic game about the formation of the real band of the same name. The fourth-wall-breaking trailer explains the game’s mechanics, which include dialogue choices and "interactive music videos" from the band’s first EP. We Are OFK releases on PS4, PS5, and Steam in 2022.
Bugsnax, one of the PS5 launch titles, is getting a free DLC expansion called "The Isle of Bigsnax". The DLC will include new mechanics, such as the Shrink Spice, which allows you to catch large Bugsnax featured on the new island by cutting them to a smaller size. Your hut can also be decorated by completing various tasks. The free DLC will be available on PS4, PS5, and the Epic Games Store in early 2022.

The horror franchise, Five Nights at Freddy's, will launch Security Breach, the eighth mainline game (fourteenth if you count the spin-offs) on PS4, PS5, and PC on December 16th, 2021. Security Breach will feature the series’ first fully explorable location: "Freddy’s Mega Pizza Plex". While most of the animatronics such as Freddy Fazbear and Chica return, there are two new robots: Roxane Wolf and Montgomery Gator.

Death’s Door by Acid Nerve, and published by Devolver Digital, will be released on PS4 and PS5 and Switch on November 23rd. Death’s Door was originally released on Xbox Series systems, Xbox Gamepass, and Steam on July 20th, 2021. The studio’s first game, Titan Souls, will be free for those who preorder Death’s Door. However, this promotion excludes Japan.

KartRider: Drift is an upcoming free-to-play racer developed by Nexon, the developers of the MMO Maplestory. PS4, Xbox One, and PC players can sign up for the closed beta, which will take place between December 8th at 7:00 PM EST and December 15th at 8:00 AM EST.

The King of Fighters XV will be having a closed beta from November 19th at 7:00 PM PST to November 22nd at 6:59 AM PST. Players can play eight previously announced characters, including the most recent Dolores. King of Fighters XV releases on February 17th, 2022.

First Class Trouble is a "Social Deduction" game in the same vein as Among Us, or Town of Salem. The game features two groups of people: Residents and Personoids. The goal of the game as a resident, according to the Playstation. My blog post "For residents, your main goal is to shut down the rogue A.I. at the heart of the Alithea. To reach C.A.I.N., you’ll need to collect three keycards to progress to the next level deeper inside the ship." As the name suggests, the goal of the robotic Personoids is to use their ability to shapeshift into humans to stop the Residents.

A New Star Wars Game is to be revealed on December 14th

Disney has announced their newest campaign “Bring Home the Bounty” which will reveal new Star Wars merchandise every week until December 28th. While many of the reveals will be action figures and Lego sets, there is a video game-related announcement planned for December 14th, as hinted at by a gamepad icon.

EA’s contract with Lucasfilm is not set to expire until 2023, according to a report by the Hollywood Reporter. Disney stated during the 2020 DICE Summit that the company is open to the idea of licensing out their IPs to more studios. This has led to games like Eidos Montreal’s Guardians of The Galaxy, which is releasing later this month.

The announcement could be a few things. First, it could be an update to a game that has previously been announced. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, for example, was announced for release last year. But like many games this year, it has been delayed. A trailer released last month confirmed that the game will be available in the spring of 2022.

While a gameplay update for the recently announced Knights of the Old Republic Remake by Aspyr is certainly possible, it may be too early, considering that we do not have a release window yet. We could also get details surrounding Ubisoft’s “Open World” Star Wars game that was announced way back in January.

The announcement could be an entirely new game or a sequel to Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. Or even more unlikely, a resurrection of the Lucas Arts canceled title Star Wars 1313, which occurred following the acquisition by Disney in 2012.

Bring Home the Bounty is a 12-week celebration revealing new Star Wars toys, apparel, and more!

Sora is the Final Super Smash Bros Ultimate DLC + Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary News

Super Smash Bros Ultimate was released three and a half years ago, the game’s director Masahiro Sakurai announced yesterday, that Sora from Kingdom Hearts is joining the battle as the final DLC character. He will be released on October 18. As a little Easter egg, not only is Sora’s release coinciding with update 13, but the release date is 13 days away.

Sakurai mentioned during the presentation, that Sora was the most requested character ever since the “Smash Bros Fighter Ballot” for Smash Bros Wii u and 3DS back in 2015. As a side note, it seems that the late president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata was aware of the results of the ballot, but Sakurai decided not to share the results of the poll, as it would “cause some inconvenience to many parties.”

Although Sakurai and his team could not get the rights to use Donald and Goofy, Sora does have some Disney representation as his Mickey keychain is at the end of his Keyblade. Sora’s six color variations include his four costumes from Kingdom Hearts 1,2, Dream Drop Distance, and 3. He also has his “Timeless River” costume from the KH 2 world, which is inspired by the 1930s Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts. Lastly, Sora has his Valor, Wisdom, and Ultimate Drive Forms from Kingdom Hearts 2.

As for his playstyle, he plays almost exactly as he does in his RPG series. Sora is an airborne fighter with a high midair jump and a good recovery. Sakurai of course knows the series well, as he describes his playstyle as “quite floaty”. Sakurai stated that Sora is more straightforward compared to some of the more “idiosyncratic” DLC characters. Sakurai points out that his weakness is his weight, as Sora can be easily launched.

Sora’s move set is based on Kingdom Hearts 1. Tapping or holding down the attack button will initiate his 3-hit combo, which can be pulled from his neutral, side tilt, neutral air, and forward air attacks. This, in combination with his other normal attacks, makes Sora one of the most combo-heavy fighters. Sora also makes use of his magic attacks: Firaga, Thundaga, and Blizzaga, which are cycled through similar to Dragon Quest Hero’s attack. His taunt also cycles through other spells such as Curaga, Stopga, and Aeroga. These spells don’t have any effect.

Sora’s side special is “Sonic Blade” which allows for three hits in any direction, this is also a great recovery move. His Aerial Sweep is his up special, which can cause continuous damage, giving a little more airtime compared to Link’s Spin Attack. Sora’s Down B attack is “counterattack” which pushes enemies slightly in front of you. This is different from the shield counter that every character can use which just stops the attack. Counterattack can also deflect projectiles. Sakurai showed off Sora’s Final Smash “Sealing the Keyhole”, but he decided to skip details as he wants the player to experience it for themselves.

Sora’s stage is Hollow Bastion, which is a transitional stage as it will change to “Dive into the Heart” when time is running out or a player is running low on stocks. The latter stage will periodically show murals of various Kingdom Hearts characters including Riku, Roxas, and Xion. Although Sakurai remembers Xion, unfortunately, Kairi is not a part of this stage.

There are a total of nine songs: “Night of Fate”, “Destiny’s Force”, “Shrouding Dark Cloud”, “Hand in Hand”, “Blast Away! Gummi Ship II-“, “Hollow Bastion”, “Scherzo Di Notte”, “Fragments of Sorrow” and Destati”. The Swing version of “Dearly Beloved” will also be included for those who have save data for Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory. Lastly, Kingdom Hearts composer, Yoko Shimomura created a special arrangement of “Hand in Hand” which will play if Sora wins a match.

The Spirit representation is sparse due to the Disney licensing situation. So, his KH 1-3, Dream Drop Distance, and Timeless River outfits are the only Spirits in-game. Sakurai ended the presentation by announcing that Kingdom Hearts 1.5, 2.5, and 3 will be available on Nintendo Switch, VIA the system’s cloud feature. There has not been a confirmed release date as of writing.

After the presentation, Square Enix released a video regarding the 20th anniversary of Kingdom Hearts. Although there will be a dedicated event for the anniversary is next year, the video hinted at two pieces of merchandise that will be available soon: a chess set and a briefcase, but we currently do not have details yet.

Capcom’s Monster Hunter Spotlight at the Tokyo Game Show provided many updates about Monster Hunter Rise, as well as the game’s first DLC expansion: Sunbreak, which is being released in summer 2022. We will learn a lot more about the new location, monsters, and quests at a later date. But we have a sneak peek at monsters that are returning from previous games in the series.
The game’s director Yasunori Ichinose confirmed that the dragon shown in the Sunbreak trailer is called Malzeno. He also confirmed that the Sh**un Ceanataur from Monster Hunter 2 is included in the DLC. There will be more monsters from previous installments appearing in the DLC.

Monster Hunter Rise is coming to Steam on January 12th, 2022. The PC port will have the features that one would expect: 4K support, a high frame rate, voice chat, mouse and keyboard controls, and ultrawide display support. The Steam version will include all the free DLC up until November of this year. There will also be a demo available on October 13th.

Arthur from Ghosts n’ Goblins: Resurrection is the last Capcom crossover event in Monster Hunter Rise. The quests to pick up the cosmetic items for Arthur are available on October 29th. Going forward, all cosmetics will be tied to Monster Hunter-related quests and will be added periodically.

While the Ghosts n’ Goblins crossover event is free, there will be a paid player voice pack that is releasing at the end of October. The two characters included in the pack are Hibasa, Hamon the Blacksmith’s disciple, and Monju, Fugen the Elder’s, niece.
SungWon Cho A.K.A ProZD on Youtube; has voiced various characters in video games such as FL4K from Borderlands 3 and Mitsuo Yasumura from Yakuza: Like a Dragon. He will be the voice of Hibasa. Debra Wilson, known as the voice of Cere Junda, will be the voice of Monju.

The last Nintendo Direct of the year wrapped up last night. Further proving that while 2021 may have been a down year in terms of video game releases, 2022 might be one of the best years for the medium.

Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games are coming to the NSO service as part of a new subscription tier which is aptly called the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. This new tier will include a library of games from both systems, with more coming in the future. Although we currently do not know the price of this new tier. It will be available in late October, so we will find out soon. It has also been confirmed that existing NSO members can upgrade to the + Expansion Pack tier. The following is the launch lineup for the N64 NSO games.

• Streets of Rage
• Strider

Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis wireless controllers will also be available for the retail price of $49.99 each.

The final Smash Ultimate character was not announced during the Direct. Instead, we got an announcement of an announcement. Sakurai will reveal the last Super Smash Bros Ultimate character on October 5th at 7:00 AM PT / 10:00 AM ET.

Kirby and The Forgotten Land appear to be taking a page out of Mario Odyssey’s playbook, As the title is straying away from the traditional 2D and 3D linear gameplay and instead will have explorable 3D areas. The setting for the new game has a “post-apocalyptic” feeling to it, as even Yoshiaki Koizumi points out “The setting also appears to be mysterious, filled with abandoned structures from a past civilization.” Kirby and The Forgotten Land will release in the Spring of 2022.

Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak is the first DLC, releasing in Summer 2022. There will be more details during Capcom’s Tokyo Game Show presentation on September 30th. Sunbreak will feature “new stories, locations, monsters, new hunting actions and quest ranks”.

Mario Party Superstars will include five boards from the first three games. Woody Woods from Mario Party, Horror Land, Peach’s Birthday Cake, and Space Land from Mario Party 2, and Woody Woods from Mario Party 3 will also be returning. The game will have an online mode called Mt Minigames, which will feature over 100 minigames and seven boards. However, some of the boards can only be played online. Mt Minigames can be played in the single-player mode Survival, or Co-op mode called Tag Match. The latter can be played with either local wireless or online.

“The Roost” will finally be coming to Animal Crossing New Horizons, over a year after release. Although it was just a teaser, there will be an Animal Crossing New Horizons Direct in October, which will detail “new content” that will be releasing in November.
Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars is a “fresh take on tabletop RPG“ by Nier Replicant / Automata directors Yoko Taro, and Yosuke Saito, along with Music Director, Keiichi Okabe and character designer, Kimihiko Fujisaka. While the game will be out in a few short months on October 28th, there is a demo available on the Eshop.

Chocobo GP is essentially Mario Kart but with Final Fantasy characters. Although it seems to be very similar to other kart racers, the combat seems to be different. You can create tiered magic attacks (Fire, Fira, and Firaga for example) by smashing into color-coded containers called Magicites. Local and online multiplayer will be available, the latter of which will have a 64 player eliminate style tournament. The trailer revealed that Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII, Chocobos, Gilgamesh, and black mages are playable characters. Chocobo GP is releasing exclusively for the Nintendo Switch in 2022.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity DLC wave 2 releases on October 29th. The second wave of DLC will include new stories Battle for Kakariko Village and Battle of Goponga. There will be three new characters: Purah, Robbie, and one mystery character. There will be new stages including the Coliseum.

There is a new update for Mario Golf: Super Rush launching today. Koopa Troopa and Ninji as playable characters. There are also two new courses.

Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition is an upcoming re-release of the life sim that was originally released on the 3DS in 2016. The Switch version that is available this holiday will include all the DLC.

Disco Elysium The Final Cut will receive a Switch release on October 12th, with a physical edition coming in 2022.

Although the recently announced Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is not yet confirmed for the Switch, the studio behind the remake, and the IOS port of the original KOTOR, Aspyr will re-release the original Bioware RPG onto the Switch on November 11th.

Dying Light 2 was recently delayed until February 4th, 2022. It looks like a cloud version of the upcoming zombie game will be coming to the Switch on October 19th. Dying Light Platinum Edition, which includes the three DLC expansions: The Following, The Bozak Horde, and Hellraid. There will also be a plethora of skins and weapons included.

Triangle Strategy has made several changes thanks to the feedback the developers received after releasing a demo in February. These changes include difficulty settings, UI improvements, camera controls, reviewing previous dialogue, and improved load times. Triangle Strategy launches on March 4th, 2022.

Castlevania Advance Collection will include the three games released on the Gameboy Advance: Circle of The Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, and Aria of Shadow. The NES game, Castlevania: Dracula X will also be included. The games will feature a rewind system, quick save, and button mapping. Finally, the American, European, and Japanese versions of each game will be included. This compilation is available now on Switch, as well as Playstation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and PC for $19.99.

The 1991 NES platformer and city builder- Actraiser is receiving a remaster called Actraiser Renaissance. This remaster will feature the original soundtrack, as well as a remixed version. Actraiser Renaissance is out now for $29.99.

Chapter 1 and 2 of Deltarune, the sequel to Toby Fox’s hit Indie game Undertale is now available for free on the EShop (plus Steam and Playstation consoles).

Bayonetta 3, which was announced back in 2017, finally has a gameplay trailer, along with a 2022 release window.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario and The Legend of Zelda, gave some details regarding the voice cast for the Mario movie, which is releasing in America on December 22nd, 2022. As it turns out, Charles Martinet will not be the voice of Mario (as he will appear as “surprise cameos”). Instead, Chris Pratt, known for Star-Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise will play as the goomba stomping plumber.

The rest of the cast is as follows: Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogan will play as Donkey Kong. Kevin Michael-Richardson will play as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and finally, Sebastian Maniscalco will play Spike from Wrecking Crew.

A Nintendo Direct Approaches!

A Nintendo Direct has been announced for tomorrow at 3:00 PM PST / 6:00 PM EST. This matches up with the FCC filing for a new Nintendo 64 controller, which we reported on yesterday. Tomorrow’s Direct will be roughly 40 minutes long and will focus primarily on games releasing this winter.

Nintendo Switch’s lineup for the remainder of 2021 and early 2022 appears to be mostly set in stone. Metroid Dread and Super Mario Party are releasing on October 8th and October 28th. And Shin Megami Tensei V and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are releasing on November 12th and 19th. Rounding out the known release dates is Advanced Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, which is releasing on December 3rd.

Tomorrow’s Direct could finally show release dates and possibly gameplay for the console’s most highly anticipated games: Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3, Mario and Rabbids Sparks of Hope, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild 2.

“Tune in 9/23 at 3 p.m. PT for a livestream featuring roughly 40 minutes of information focused mainly on games launching this winter.”

FCC Filing May Hint Towards a Nintendo Direct This Week

Many outlets reported last week that an FCC filing for a new Nintendo Switch controller was found via the official FCC ID Database on Thursday, September 16th. The FCC ID: BKEHAC043 may look familiar, as we have been down this road before. The Switch version of the SNES controller was registered on August 13th, 2019, via the FCC ID Database with the ID: BKEHAC042. The Nintendo Direct on September 4th confirmed the addition of SNES games on the Nintendo Online Service. There have been many rumors, beginning with NatetheHate’s Podcast on YouTube, where Nate believes that some of Nintendo’s “legacy hardware” may be added to NSO, including the Nintendo 64.

The newest FCC filing shown on apps.fcc.gov has been edited today, revealing that the filing will go public this Friday, the 24th. This in itself does not confirm that a Nintendo Direct is for sure happening on Friday, as Nintendo could upload a video to their social media channels, that N64 games are being added to NSO. However, the timing makes sense as we have had Directs in September since 2019.
