Getting feedback like this in our inbox makes our day! Stephanie has a son in a Mandarin/English dual immersion school that teaches traditional Chinese characters. Their family loved Issue 01 and wanted to find out more about educational discounts for their teachers. Of course we were happy to offer that!

If you’d like to see our magazine in your children’s classrooms, let us know. We have discounts for teachers and libraries, and we would love to get more copies out there 📚

While our magazine was created with overseas families in the Chinese diaspora in mind, it’s always delightful to hear from native Chinese learners as well. Taiwan-based, Awan, shared her favorite parts of the magazine with us. We love exploring each country as a theme as well and are so glad to hear our readers are most excited about this!

Since this is our first issue, we are learning what our readers are most drawn to. 5yo 孫浩峰 picked up the magazine and started to fill in the things he would bring on his shinkansen journey. His mom writes: “The short comic and story were great and we co-read them both! Great magazine for a 5 year old.”

As we put together Issue 02, we love feedback like this so we can continue to fill it with your readers’ favorite things, and they can enjoy more Chinese reading and activities 😊

恩恩 decided to pick up the magazine that I wrote for her and with her (unprompted!) The first issue arrived in the mail yesterday and she was so eager to fill it out as it’s finally in paper form. We also talked about visiting Japan which is the theme of the first issue. We traveled to Japan with her when she was 8mo which she didn’t remember so I told her about that too.

There’s so much I want to improve and add to this magazine but my heart is already so full seeing a reader like her enjoy my first attempt at a Chinese children’s magazine.

Each issue of the magazine is focused on a country. In Issue 01, we take our readers to Japan. Our feature story is beautifully illustrated by Tokyo-based who added her signature floral details to our magazine.

Little Picnic Magazine was created when my oldest child 恩恩 became a budding reader in Chinese. She always wanted a variety of reading materials and was eager to read different things without repetition. As a family learning four languages in three written texts, our home library was quickly overflowing as we acquired books. We tried a few things: purging all our English books to free up more space and relying on our local public library for English resources instead, rotating books from storage seasonally, and borrowing foreign language books where we could.

Little Picnic Magazine was born out of wanting to continue to build a print rich Chinese environment at home as my daughter’s literacy skills and interests grew, while keeping the format compact and ephemeral. I liked the idea of a steady subscription of Chinese content for her at an introductory level as many magazines available were dense and far too advanced (aka intimidating at her age).

I’ve toyed with the idea of a magazine for over 2 years, wondering if I would have the bandwidth to take on something so different. Now 恩恩 is 6yo and eager to be a co-creator of the magazine too! I hope you all like it when we release it next month 🤞🏻

Whether you’ve been following since 2018, or are new to this account, a self introduction is overdue. Here are 10 things about me:

1. This is my family of 4 (soon to be 5!) My older two are 6yo and 3yo.
2. I started in 2018. It began with a single board book about Hong Kong, that I intended to gift my daughter for her first birthday. There was never a plan to print more or start a publishing business!
3. My background is in graphic design. I used to write for design and architecture publications, before spending the last decade in tech as a designer for websites and apps. Publishing has been my side hustle and creative outlet for the last 5 years.
4. My biracial kids are half Ukrainian, half Chinese. We’re teaching them to speak, read, and write in Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian, and English. The older two are fluent for their ages, and we plan on introducing the same 4 languages to our youngest.
5. I grew up in Hong Kong and went to a traditional British school (think Hogwarts without the magic.) I learned Cantonese simply by living in Hong Kong but did not have any formal instruction. I picked up Mandarin as a language later.
6. I am proudly Cantonese and Shanghainese. Shanghainese food is easily my favorite Chinese cuisine as it reminds me most of home.
7. My family speak Shanghainese among each other but we have no plans to pass that down to my kids. They know a few phrases here and there.
8. I spent 5 or more years living in each of these cities: Hong Kong, Toronto, New York, and now San Francisco.
9. is my first time writing in Chinese for publication. It’s so different, it’s so niche, but I’m excited to release it next month and see what you all think. The process of putting it together has been full of joy for me, especially getting to involve my 6yo as a co-editor, proofreader, and consultant.
10. My inspiration for almost always comes from conversations, observations, and reading with my two kids. At every age, their curiosity and interests have sparked ideas for me to create something that’s missing for them and kids just like them.

Now tell me a little about you!

When I decided to create a magazine, I knew I wanted to include a comic strip in every issue. My kids are so motivated to read Chinese in this format! The conversational text is usually shorter and the visuals support every scene of the sequence for comprehension. It’s very inviting to little readers.

A nature-themed comic strip will be a recurring feature in our magazine and we are excited for you to read the first one.
