A Classmates Memorial Remarks...
Lt. Gen. James H. Johnson
USMA, Class of 1960
Jim Johnson was a fellow classmate in the 1st Regiment of the Corps of Cadets, and also became a personal friend many years later as a cherished member of the Class of ’60 Golf Group. From these sixty-seven years of knowing him, I can tell you that he was very quiet, very humble, and circumspect like most good generals.
When Jim and all of his infantry classmates graduated from Airborne School in 1960, he never stopped jumping out of planes. On and off for 30 years. His first Platoon was in the 2d Battle Group, 501st Parachute Infantry. I can see him quietly taking command of his first rifle platoon, and within a day or so everyone knew who was in charge.
Jim was an Infantry unit commander, pure and simple. The buck stopped at his desk throughout his military service. From the perspective of a fellow infantry officer, he achieved the ultimate career. Career is not the right word for Jim Johnson - it was a calling.
He commanded a rifle company in the 25th Division. In 1966-67, when things started heating up in Vietnam, he was an advisor with a South Vietnamese infantry battalion. In 1969-70, he returned as a Battalion S-3 in the 101st Airmobile Division in Vietnam - perhaps the most challenging year of the war. Back to the paratroopers he loved, he commanded the 2d Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry at Ft. Bragg. He commanded the 2d Brigade of the 82d Airborne Division. He was the Assistant Division Commander, and thereafter the Division Commander of the 82d Airborne Division. His last command was 1st Army as a Lieutenant General. When Jim was not in command, at all the right schools, or doing penance in the Pentagon, he was an operations Officer - at battalion, division and corps level. The most enviable staff position for an infantry officer.
Not only was he humble and quiet, he was also personable and kind to everyone. His first loyalty was to the soldiers he commanded. I can assure you that a man with Jim Johnson’s personal traits did not get selected to command all those units and paratroopers without having the respect, admiration, and affection of the many soldiers that he commanded along the way.

Eulogy for LTG(Ret) James H. Johnson, Jr.....
Friends and family, thank you for being here today. I would like to thank Colonel Taylor and the remarkable Paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division who are honoring Dad today. Dad once again is proud to be amongst the greatest Paratroopers in the world.
There is a saying that we should live our life so that the values we use to describe ourselves in our resume are the virtues used to describe our life in a eulogy. This is not an easy goal, as we often fail to attain what we aspire to. But today, we gather to celebrate a life that achieved this aspiration. Dad lived a life anchored in discipline, perseverance, duty, honor, and unwavering commitment to country.
Discipline was the foundation of Dad's life. Discipline was evident in every part of his life, from his remarkable 33-year military career to his post-retirement passion for golf. He was not content with mediocrity; he pursued excellence in everything he undertook. His discipline guaranteed that thousands of Soldiers survived under his leadership in combat and returned home safely.
Dad epitomized the virtues of West Point’s motto, ‘Duty, Honor, Country.’ These were not mere words for him; they were the very core of his being.
Dad was a man of integrity, and his word was his bond, whether on the battlefield or on the golf course. He earned the trust and respect of everyone he encountered, whether it was the President of the U.S. or the receptionist at the doctor’s office.
We all had the privilege of witnessing Dad’s virtues up close. He was a dedicated husband for 62 years, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. These virtues also made him a good neighbor and a great teammate. He lived his life as a testament to these values, and he leaves behind a legacy that challenges each of us to do the same.
As we say our final farewell, let us remember that Dad’s life was not just a list of accomplishments, but a demonstration of what it means to live with purpose, honor, and integrity. Let us honor his memory by striving to make our own resume values our eulogy virtues, just as he did.
Dad, you have left us with a profound legacy. Rest in peace, knowing that your values will continue to guide and inspire us in the years to come.
