MERA DOWNPLAYS FUEL STOCK OUT FEARS

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) is confident that fuel stocks in the country are sufficient, amid fears that most filling stations are running out of the commodity.

Media reports had indicated that on Thursday, a number of service stations in Mzuzu, Zomba and Lilongwe had little or no fuel, resulting in fears that stocks at MERA are running out.

A statement signed by MERA Chief Executive Officer, Henry Kachaje, explains that the fuel distribution plan was affected by logistical and operational challenges but 93 percent of fuel retail outlets in the country have both Diesel and Petrol available.

The statement further appeals to stakeholders and the public to avoid spreading speculative information on availability of fuel, which results in anxiety and panic buying.

In the most recent related development, fuel stock outs were affected by strikes spearheaded by truck drivers.
