Statistics from the Malawi Police Service-MPS show that 262 people, mostly pedestrians, have died from 1, 237 road accidents in the first quarter of this year, thus between January and March.

The Police have attributed this to negligence by pedestrians when crossing the roads, speeding by some drivers, unnecessary overtaking and drink driving.

However, National Police Assistant Spokesperson, Felix Misomali says the figure is a decline from last year where 323 deaths were recorded from 2, 974 road accidents in the same period.

Meanwhile, Police says have intensified traffic checks, use of speed trap cameras and breathalyzers besides sensitization meetings on road safety to further reduce the road accidents in Malawi.
