A very rare game indeed, tonight. Geronimo is a 1976 roll and mover with the strange gimmick off climbing a cliff-face to get to the treasure while the enemy below you can destroy the levels you've climbed from under you, eventually causing you to fall and start again. More complicated than it sounds but also simple enough to learn in 1 turn. The soundtrack: Red Dead Redemption, one of the greatest scores ever written. The fact that it's for a video game defies belief(especially for the time it was composed). They used a real orchestra to bring the music to life and it shows. It also uses quite modern drum work in places which should sound anachronistic but actually just works beautifully. The choice to include actual songs like 'Dead Man's Gun' really elevates the entire experience. A game changing piece of work. #westernboardgame #westernboardgames #obscureboardgames #redeadredemption #viseogamesoundtracks
Hacking through this fantastic beast. I hate learning rules but this one does a pretty good job of lowering you in gently. Drip-feeding rules is always a good idea in my book so hats off to the designers. For this scenario, we're using Skeleton Battle battle/combat music from the wonderful Bardify on YT. This is a superb piece of music, insistent, tense and perfect for skirmishes at close quarters. #َgloomhavenjawsofthelion #boardgamesoundtrack #musicforgamesandfilm #boardgamemusic #bardify
Board Game Night: Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs! This mighty 80's classic has you racing across a forgotten prehistoric land in search of hidden ancient treasure. Shoot dinos, fall in the swamp, swoop down with the pteranodon and avoid the volcano's lava, this game has it all. For the soundtrack choice, I've gone with something reminiscent of the old stop motion adventure movies I'd often find playing on terrestrial tv on a rainy Sunday afternoon when I was a kid: 1960's The Lost World by Paul Sawtell and Bert Shefter. It conveys the sense of fun, fear and excitement that the game shares, while keeping it old-fashioned and rough around the edges enough to recall the innocence of a bygone era. #lostvalleyofthedinosaursgame #lostvalleyofthedinosaurs #80sboardgamenight #boardgamemusic #waddingtonsgames
John Williams is a flawless composer. Arguably the greatest film composer of all time, his distinctive sound comes from his extensive use of insistent and commanding melodies lifted by majestic counter melodies that fill the room with a sense of adventure. Nothing is lazy and even the most subtle underscores take on a life of their own when listened to in isolation. For Fireball Island, we've chosen his soundtrack to The Lost World. It screams jungle adventure while using less of the instantly recognisable themes from the previous film, Jurassic Park, making it ideal in its own right as an accompaniment to a game set on a volcanic island. Never bettered, John Williams has forever changed the standard of film score composition and has given some of the most beautiful and moving music ever created. In many ways, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Superman, Jaws all owe their appeal and cultural impact to this man. Did you know, he also wrote the music for the tv show Land Of The Giants in the 1960's? #thelostworldsoundtrack #fireballislandboardgame #boardgamesoundtrack #boardgamesoundtracks #damnationthegothicgame
I did an interview with my friend and fellow teacher, Zdenek, for his podcast. He and I go way back as we bonded over our mutual love of board games, as well as using them as tools in English classes. #damnationthegothicgame #gothicsoundtrack #gothicsoundtracks #boardgamesoundtracks #composerinterview #composerinterviews

My wife and I(that's me throwing the ring) watched the new #thelordoftheringsamusicaltale at #thewatermilltheatrenewbury on Friday. My favourite book of all time and, so far, my favourite theatre experience. The cast of 20 all sing, dance, act and play their own instruments to a beautifully intimate rendition of the epic tale. At 3 hours long, it has to edit and streamline many of the story's tangents, but it does it well and keeps the hobbits at its heart, beginning and ending outside in the actual gardens of the old converted watermill. It's Bilbo's 111st, the audience are the guests and the hobbits interact playfully with you as in the run up to his birthday speech. Recently, this theatre had its funding cut. Refusing to bend, someone decided to take an almighty risk and put on the biggest and most expensive production it has ever done. It has paid off(so far) and the team have managed to succeed where the original London run of this production failed in 2007, making this journey moving, heartfelt and visibly gruelling for our hobbits. No one phones it in here. While the protagonists lead the charge, the 'extras'(I use that term lightly) keep the blood warm and pumping, clogging the tiny theatre with enthusiasm and musical prowess as they strum, pluck and sing along to the action they flank. It's showing until mid October and I couldn't recommend it enough. Immersive and memorable long after the lights of Hobbiton have been extinguished, this was a truly perfect night. #thewatermilltheatre #lotrmusical #bilbos111thbirthday
