Royal Dutch Shell struck oil on Ogoni lands in Delta State in 1958 and this was the beginning of a string of environmental and human rights injustices against the people of Ogoni land till now. A community which was once rich in natural resources became destitute. Dejected by the rapid decline in their fortune, they protested against the pollution of their environment and demanded for clean air, water, education, health facilities, etc.

**Film recommendation - Oloibiri. Tells the story of how the lives of villagers where crude oil was first discovered in commercial quantity in the Niger Delta was changed.
