Oh what a night! "Christmas in New York" is a wrap 🤩🎉🙏🙏

Grande Prairie (and area) you showed UP, sold this out & (immersively) made very merry on a Sunday night; thanks to EVERYONE in attendance 😊💕

From our doorman, Ted, Marcia's team & the dancers, the crew, to the food & beverage teams, our incredible MD, Mark & the ALL-STAR BAND, Arjun, David and the GPLT team, this was a true team effort, pulled off on an impossible timeline. WELL DONE 👏👏🎶🥂💃🕺🎄🎅

Meet your ambience & decor specialist for tomorrow's (!!!) sold-out show: the fabulous Marcia Tofer!!

Marcia is a visual artist spanning many mediums from performance art, two dimensional media and three dimensional installations.

Her environmental installations lean into bridging immersive ambience with whimsy and warmth with an emphasis on satisfying the senses. Her work
with installations can be found under the brand Waking State.

As a traditional artist, she has participated in Visual arts shows at Art Gallery of Grande Prairie, 2023, NW Polytechnic, 2017, 2021, 2022 and at the Beaverlodge Art Gallery in 2017. In 2021, she collaborated on the set design for Le Hotel Superbe, directed by Wayne Ayling of GP Live Theatre. In what feels like a previous life, Marcia was an Art Director for the fantasy role-playing game Baldur's Gate series at
Bioware Corp. in 1996 to 2000, collaborating to create over 10,000 game screens of environments.

As a movement creator, under the name Dream Dance Circus, she has presented choreographed fire dance shows for the City of Grande Prairie since 2015 as well as numerous festivals across western
Canada. Her roving solo works have been part of the International Street Performers festival since 2016. She continues to create circus and dance productions.

Meet another of our amazing Featured Vocalists for "Christmas in New York" on Dec. 17: Nathaniel Shantz 😀🎉🙏🙏

Born and raised in Grande Prairie, Nathaniel started his singing curriculum with the local Grande Prairie Boys Choir under Jeannie Pernal, a conductor and lifelong coach. He continued with this group for 11 years until graduation and still sings with the alumni group today, The Continuum of Men. Nathaniel has also succeeded in singing with the Alberta Youth Choir for several seasons; an honour choir touring local parts of Alberta with various guest conductors.

Nathaniel eventually pursued classical voice training under the internationally renowned John Tessier at the University of Alberta. He also joined the Madrigal Singers, a university honour choir previously under the watchful guidance of Len Ratzlaff. After two years, Nathaniel switched to a Bachelor of Commerce and graduated with the intent of returning to his hometown.

Despite his career change, Nathaniel still has a great passion for music, and uses his talent to perform with various local groups in Grande Prairie.

It's time to meet the first of our Featured Singers for Dec. 17ths (SOLD-OUT) "Chrstmas in New York" show: the amazing Afton Wrzosek 😀🎉🙏🎶🎅

Afton was born and raised in Grande Prairie, Alberta. At the age of 16, she left Grande Prairie to​​ finish high school at Interlochen Arts Academy, a performing arts high school in Michigan. Prior to leaving Grande Prairie, Afton was a long-time voice student of Ellyn Otterson. She holds a Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where she graduated with High Distinction in 2013 as a mezzo-soprano.

Since returning to Grande Prairie, she has been an active participant in productions by Grande Prairie Live Theatre. Afton is also a founder of Spotlight Performance Collective, a not-for-profit theatrical organization that primarily focuses on Canadian works and new play development within the Peace Region.

Meet our pianist for this event: the inimitable Dr. Curtis Smith.

Dr. Smith has been a dentist in the Peace Country for the past 40 years, and continues to enjoy serving patients, now at Today’s Dental in Grande Prairie.

An avid supporter of community, Curtis has been involved in both the areas of sports and music, and was awarded the George Repka award by the City of Grande Prairie in 2015 for outstanding contribution to the community.

After helping develop both facilities and programs for the 1995 Canada Winter Games, he was the co-founder and an avid supporter of the Northern Extreme Freestyle Ski program which produced four National Team members and over fifteen World Cup medals.  

Curtis created scholarships, and was involved in facility development for local musicians, at the local college level (the recording studio at NWP), and at studios in town, often doing recording sessions at his own home!  A very competent Jazz/Pop/Soul musician primarily focussing on keyboards, Curtis started out playing the Edmonton Cabaret circuit, with his group releasing a record and garnering a top ten hit in Canada.  He remained involved in the recording scene internationally and has enjoyed working with several Juno award-winning artists in the areas of composition, arrangement, and recording, and he is proud to see the Grande Prairie music scene continuing to flourish, with multiple artists receiving Juno nominations in the past few years.  

With three children raised here and now out in the world, Curtis still calls Grande Prairie home.  Outside of the dental clinic, you may find him making music with any variety of local artists including his wife, walking, biking, hiking, skiing, or playing racket sports such as squash or pickleball.

Good morning! Meet a couple of legends rounding out the rhythm (and more) section of Dec. 17's "Christmas in New York" band:
Lee Billwiller (bass) & Paul Strand (el. guitar) 🙏🙏

Both Lee and Paul are mainstays in the area jazz scene, covering a variety of instruments & styles. If you have seen or heard live jazz/blues/ragtime etc. anywhere in recent memory, you can bet that either one, or both, of these gents were playing 🎶🎸😀🎉

(Anyone remember Gatsby nights? Either the Jazz Hans or the first band??)

We KNOW that you will be blown away by what these cats bring to the mix 🎉🎅🕺💃🥂

Wowie; I know you are super curious about the band, so meet the drummer for Dec. 17... David Oostra!

Dave began his musical journey at the age of 3 when his parents bought him his first drum set, and has been playing music ever since.
He took drum lessons through the GPRC Fine Arts Conservatory from age 6-16. He then went on to study for two years at Grande Prairie Regional College, followed by four years at MacEwan University in their Bachelor of Music program.
Dave has played in many groups over the years and continues to perform professionally.

Hot on the heels of the last playthrough, we're back at it! We had so much fun, that we've captured another one, with the intent to release more in the coming weeks & months 😮😮

Hey, remember 2008? I sure do! It was a simpler time: metalcore, deathcore and NWOAHM was being nominated for, and winning, GRAMMYs, vans full of bands were criss-crossing the continent, melting faces...nothing could go wrong!

5 years ago, I reconnected with a lot of old pals after returning to Canada. 2 years ago, Chris and I thought we'd record this playthrough. 2 years ago, I misplaced those SD cards. 4 days ago, I found those SD cards so here you go: two Metal Dads channeling Ozymandias?

This is a playthrough to the 2010(?) EP, from the 2008 album, with re-tracked guitars etc... "Of Reflections" is the 3rd track on that EP.
Chris and I started with lots of camera angles capturing single takes, but they weren't quite in the pocket. On a whim, we thought we'd track together, et voila; we were in the zone! What's the lesson there?

The audio is our first take in tandem, while the video is clearly 2 takes. Yes, that is my original Hamer Slammer, the guitars are running Neural's Nameless plugin and there's no post (except for those zooms!).

Hey pals, here we go: posts & content coming up...FINALLY 😀
SO - a couple of years ago, Chris and I recorded a playthrough of a classic Calculating Collapse tune (was all that really 12-15 years ago??) 🤯 Almost immediately, I misplaced the SD cards, finding them literally a couple of days ago 😅🙏🙏

THUS, I am going to throw all the assets into Premiere and export a playthrough video just as soon as possible, without any fiddling, just so this is out there, as intended, flubs and all!

Stay tuned...hopefully this drops this weekend (Sunday?); limber up, stretch, and prepare for some (2008-10) shreddery 🤓🤘🤘

Hey pals, it's been a long time! I'll try to be better about that ^_^
Watch this & crank it up 👇👇👇"Gone" is the latest single from Pop-Folkies McKindred from the album "Ascend".

I had the pleasure of beginning this album with the band pre-lockdown etc., and we finished this up as restrictions eased. The basic tracks (including lead vocals and harmonies) were laid live-off-the-floor, and then layers of keys, electric guitar and bass were added. Good times!

This video was filmed by the inimitable Ty Fox, out at the fabulous Demmitt Hall! This shoot was made possible through an arts grant from the City of Grande Prairie 🙂🎉🎉
