"B.: After the exercise you gave me to do with my father, and thinking about my parents and my life, I felt more than ever that I had to pay not only for my past bad manifestations, but also for all the good manifestations received from them, the life they made me, and all that they gave me. I wanted to ask if there was something I could do right now to start paying off my debt to them.

MR. GURDJIEFF: You cannot pay yet. Pay by preparing to be able and worthy to pay. There is nothing to do but what we do. You prepare to be able to pay. You can’t do it yet. You have no data. You study.

We are preparing to become capable of leading a human life. With this we pay."

"MLLE. D.: Sir, I’m trying to struggle against dreaming. I took the task of learning poetry in the morning upon waking. It helps me. This gives precision to my thought for two hours; afterwards, the dreaming resumes, especially if I am carrying out activities of daily living.

"DR. A.: Sir, you told me three weeks ago that I was living on a bed of roses. Well, since then there have been times that I have seen the more serious side of life. But I can’t keep it for long because there is a part of me that revolts.

MR. GURDJIEFF: It’s understandable. No one likes thorns. But there are no roses without thorns. Self-love and all that sort of thing doesn’t get much satisfaction here. On the contrary, it is the thorns that come out more. Work is precisely that. This is conscious work."

"MR. GURDJIEFF: You have not done the relaxation exercise. It is this factor which is the origin of your difficulty. You can eliminate it with this exercise. It is thanks to this exercise that you can control your body at any time. When we remember ourselves, all the muscles must automatically relax. Your muscles are tense. It proves that you haven’t done this exercise. You remember, we have three kinds of muscles. You must subdue the little muscles, so that every time you remember, they must relax. Without it, there is no impartial thinking."
