What happens when you bring together three previous heads of biomedical informatics departments? A lot of reflection, storytelling, and joking around! In this episode, we bring together guests who have previously run informatics departments and are still involved in various ways, whether through res...

We're editing the November release now. You asked, "how are patients responding to having their notes and results available immediately? Are they freaking out, or celebrating??"

We answered.
Stay tuned!

Hello and welcome to Informatics in the Round, a podcast designed to help everyone become a part of the dialog about topics in biomedical informatics. To paraphrase Dorothy, “Exomes and genomes and VUSes…oh my!” Time to go back to high school biology, but not the version most of us took!!!!…...

Our second episode of this year is fascinating. What do phenotypes, COVID, Cancer, Spiderman, and Jurassic Park have in common? Well, we talk about almost all of this in the episode, but I bring up Spiderman now, and the Peter Parker principle (With great power comes great responsibility....) We wel...

Season 2 is here! Thanks so much to Sarah Bland, Colin Walsh, Alissa Abeler and Hannah Smith, who made this episode what it became.

So, what data do we need to manage life after COVID? That was the initial focus of the episode. But one of the themes of the conversation is what are the questions people need to be asking today so that we can capture the information they need us in healthcare to know?

This episode features some "from the trenches" conversation about deploying software across an entire enterprise. Hope you enjoy it!

This episode focuses on the challenge of software deployment from the perspective of two completely different industries that share more in common than we realized. Oh, and of course, because this is Informatics IN THE ROUND, we get into music. But not into country music, AT ALL. We discover a c***e...

OK. Time for my team to get to work editing! We just finished recording our first ever zoom version of Informatics in the Round, focusing on COVID-19, the need for accurate information and the ways in which patient data may help us dispel myths and prioritize care through policy and public health measures. I was thrilled to hear the wisdom and expertise of Melissa McPheeters and Josh Peterson in response to insightful questions and comments from songwriter Charles Kendall Brown and the frank, funny, and formidable Shannon Kirchner Rich. I can't wait for you all to hear it!

The next episode of Informatics in the Round is even better timed than we imagined. We feature a conversation between Scott Scovill--a music industry artist, entrepreneur, and great man, and Laurie Lovett Novak--a PhD anthropologist whose work has helped unpack the roles informatics can play in the lives and homes of patients affected by disasters. We learn about about what Scott went through with his companies, what Brad Paisley went through after the Nashville flood, and a lot more.

We had no idea of what was to come. We recorded this just a week before the devastating tornado hit Nashville's east side and took the lives of more than 24 people. Then COVID-19 came and shut down the venues where up-and-coming songwriters and artists make music. This is a story that is still unfolding, but with Scott's voice and Laurie's research, we offer up a number of ways informatics can help people deal with health and disease in the setting of major disasters. I hope you take a listen to this, when it comes out in a few days. In the meantime, please spread the word about this podcast, which is found on all the usual podcast apps and sites.

With special thanks to our guests, Sarah Bland, who keeps it real and upbeat, and Coda Davison, my co-conspirator in this endeavor!
