Applications are particularly welcomed from screenwriters from underrepresented communities.

When Galley Head Lighthouse was built in 1875, it was the most powerful lighthouse light in the world. While this may no longer be the case, it is certainly a powerful destination – with dramatic cliffs, dolphins and whales appearing in the waters below and cosy lightkeepers' houses in which you can spend the night, this is big contender for the bucket list!

Fascinating story behind this photo

One of Hollywood’s very best film director’s John Ford pictured (bottom right) with Irish revolutionary freedom fighter during 1919-23, Ernie O’Malley (top left), actor John Wayne, actress Maureen O’Hara, John Wayne’s wife Esperanza Diaz Ceballos (nicknamed Chata) and Commandant General Tom Maguire (top right) of the Second Western Division of the IRA in Mayo on the set of The Quiet Man pictured in 1951.

John Wayne’s great, great grandfather, 16 year old Presbyterian Robert Morrison was a United Irishman from County Antrim who participated in the 1798 Rebellion in the “Turn ‘Oot’” of June 1798 before going into exile in the US as he would have been arrested otherwise. John Wayne’s real name is Marion Mitchell Morrison. Stephen McCracken’s book “1798 The Battle of Antrim” also covers this fact.

John Ford has also made a great film about the Irish War of Independence called The Informer, which was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning four including Ford winning Best Director. Ford also featured 1916 participant Arthur Shields in another of his movies. As well as this John Ford filmed the World War 2 Battle of Midway live as it was happening (there were no take 2’s).

Such an honour to have worked on this wonderful film. Amazing design by P**i Smith. Incredible performance from Cillian Murphy, and the rest of the actors, excellent direction, cinematography, lighting, and perfect casting by legend Maureen Hughes. Its a very powerful film 🎥
