Another adventure for the books. One of a kind. We bushwhacked even along Mine Gulch trail. But the best part was along the Prairie Fork trail gong to Cabin Flat. That camp is wild and overgrown. Most people reach it through Lupine camp. Our last leg started from Lupine camp to Guffy camp to Inspiration Point along the PCT and crossed the Highway 2 to continue all the way to Vincent Gap.

“THERE SHE IS!”

Another visit to one of my favorite camps in San Gorgonio Wilderness.. the Dry Lake. It’s an alpine lake that looks different depending on the season. Now it’s under ice and snow… probably 3-4 feet of snow. Last time I camped here was almost 5 years ago and it was dry. Then I visited one time with water and some wild ducks on it. This time was totally different. Frozen. The moon lit up the night which reflected on ice making the surroundings so bright. The wind came in around 4:00 in the morning. The spring is still buried in snow. Make sure to have the winter gear when visiting in this kind of weather.

When I started making YouTube videos, I was using a Canon camcorder. And then I switched to Sony mirrorless camera. First I had was a Sony Alpha 6000, this one started the amazing line-up of Sony APS-C mirrorless cameras in the market today. Now I am using a Sony Alpha 6400 which is awesome camera. The a6000 is now my back up camera. For lens, I have the Sigma 16 mm f1.4 prime lens for most time I am shooting. It’s wide open and great for landscape shots. Here are some of the camera gears that go with my photography. Although I have a DJI 3 4K drone, there’s so many restricted places that I can not use it while on a liking/backpacking trip. Another addition to my cameras is the iPhone 12 Pro Max which has superb cameras with wide angle as well. For some cinematic shots, I use MovieMaker G slider. Additional lens is the Sony 70-350 mm G OSS for zoom shots. Rode external mic, two Anker power bank chargers ( 13,000 mAh and 20,100 mAh ) depending on number of days on the field. I have the AOKA KB 20 carbon fiber tripod (28 cm), SIRUI 3T-35R, small Gorilla tripod. I don’t use gopro sports camera but I have a iConntech action cam for underwater footage. JJC ND filter 2-2000 and an Altura set of ND filters as well. Not shown is the funny pack I used as camera bag by Zpack.

BLM or Bureau of Land Management lands offer a lot of public lands with yellow post campsites. One of them is the one up in Black Mountain. Haven for Boulder rock climbers, it is also a great escape from the city and experience peace and quiet. We spent overnight(s) there and enjoyed the view from the balcony as I called it. We visited the Black Mountain in Banning-Idyllwild area and spent overnight in this secluded yellow post campsite. It was so quiet and calm the whole time, I even set-up my tent near the ledge overlooking the Morongo Basin down below and the San Gorgonio Mountain across. Going there needs a 4x4 or high clearance vehicle. There’s no facilities or even water supply.
Thanks to Martin for leading us (Luis & Maribel, Adam and myself) to this hidden gem here in Southern California.

One crazy hike we did last weekend, it was the usual hike until we hit the canyon. Long a_ _ hike, brutal elevation gain/loss, bruised so bad but we got out safely. Nothing beats an adventure like this, it makes me feel alive again.

My friend Adam and myself headed up towards the second most difficult hike in this range, the Rattlesnake Peak with just an elevation of 5,826 ft high and elevation gain of more than 4,000 ft. The weather was perfect with some snow up in the summit and not as crowded as Big Iron.

“MISSING FEMALE HIKER IN IRON MOUNTAIN”

Last February 13, 2021, a female (Filipina) hiker together with some other friends attempted to hike Iron Mountain in San Gabriel Mountains, ANF. This mountain is becoming popular, thanks to many who tried to collect photos for their FB or Instagram pages.

It is standing at 8,007 ft and has a reputation of being the most difficult hike in that range. Although the view on the way up is not actually scenic, the panorama at the summit is incomparable. From there one could glance at Mt Baldy from a different perspective. That is where you can view many prominent peaks around the East section of the San Gabriel National Monument such as Mt. Baden Powell, Dawson Peak, Pine Mountain, West Baldy, Mt Wilson and its neighboring peaks even a view of the Santa Catalina Island on a clear day.

It was reported that in February 13, 2021, the female hiker by the name of Maria Loida Tice has gone missing. I was able to asked some hikers this past weekend up in the summit what could have had happened to Loida. Some say she was lagging behind from the group. Some reported she was seen 500 ft below the summit. It was foggy and windy that afternoon and if she ever summited, she might ran out of daylight and hiking by herself in the dark with crazy wind and low to zero visibility. These are not accurate details but merely based on my interviews from few hikers I met last Saturday. Last week the Search and Retrieval operations were ordered to stop. If there will be no one to continue finding her, there will be no closure to this.

I am hoping and praying that the search will pursue and that one day she will be found.

Southern California got hit with another weather storm which means there will be snow fall up in the mountains. We hit the Cucamonga Wilderness, with four others to enjoy this moment of winter wonderland. We were not disappointed. We got 12 inches of snow last night and woke up with our shelters a little bit buried in white powder of snow. Here are some of the highlights of the our winter backpacking trip 2021.
