Many years after Speckles finally killed his nemesis, One-Eye, and avenged his family, his son Junior is struggling to find the courage his father possesses by nature. He is almost killed by a Tsintaosaurus, but his father comes to his aid, before asking why he ran away. Junior tells Speckles that he's afraid, but Speckles yells at him, angrily stating that he's a Tarbosaurus, and should not be afraid of the animals that should be his prey. Speckles trudges off, leaving Junior feeling ashamed.

Speckles and Junior return to their nest, and Speckles tells Junior that he fought long and hard to claim the land they now reside in. He tells Junior that as he is, he's not ready to be the King of this land, and that tomorrow they will hunt for real. Speckles tells Junior that Tarbosaurus are natural hunters, and that all he needs to do is believe in himself. Speckles chases a group of Protoceratops towards Junior, but Junior once again falters and is knocked into a nearby river. Junior screams for his father to help, his childhood fear of water coming back to haunt him. Speckles rushes to his aid, only to realise that the water is only knee deep. He scolds Junior again, calling him a disgrace, and Junior wanders back to the nest, dejected and alone.

The next morning, Junior attempts to hunt a Pachycephalosaurus to prove himself to his father. But he is ambushed by five Raptors; he calls for Speckles to come and save him while the Raptors taunt him. Speckles hears the cries of his son and rushes to save him, but the Raptors quickly grab Junior and run back the way they came. Speckles chases them to the edge of his territory, where two of the Raptors attempt to stall him and allow the others to escape. Speckles throws them both off a cliff, but is dragged off himself, plunging downwards into the river below. After dragging himself from the river, he attempts to track Junior and his kidnappers, but it soon begins to rain, and both Junior's tracks and scent are washed away. Speckles roars in anger, promising himself that he will find his son...whatever it takes.

After the two of them have remembered the ones they have lost, Speckles returns to the nest to speak to Junior. He tells Junior that their world is full of danger, but it is also full of wondrous and amazing things, and that if Junior remains without courage, his life won't be worth living.

Junior awakens in a harsh desert crater, surrounded by hundreds of young dinosaurs. A young Therizinosaurus named Slash immediately picks on Junior for being frightened, but he is defended by a young female Tarbosaururs named Blue. Slash attempts to attack Blue, but his friend, a Carnotaurus named Blade, tells him to stand down. Moments later, the raptors that kidnapped Junior arrive, herding the young dinosaurs together, and picking three to take out of the compound. In order to avoid whatever fate those chosen have already, Blue urges Junior to keep his head down and out of trouble.

After Junior's failed first hunt, both Speckles and Junior are feeling saddened. Junior curls up alone in the nest, and his mind drift back to his childhood nightmares, where he almost drowned in the ocean. He then remembers the death of his mother, and quietly whispers that he misses her. Speckles is a small distance away, gazing at himself in a lake. The lake ripples, and none other than Blue Eyes appears to him. He tells her that life is so different, and that he doesn't know how to raise Junior without her. Blue Eyes doesn't reply, but simply smiles at Speckles, reminding him that he must stay strong.

Back at the Compound, Junior tries to seek shelter in one of the many caves, but all the other dinosaurs force him out. He eventually finds a large cave the serves as the Raptor's sewage cave, and meets a young Monoclonius named Dusty, who tells him it's safe in the cave because the Raptors don't like the smell. Blue then arrives, mocking Junior again for not defending himself from Slash. Junior tells her he's waiting until he can go home, to which she responds by saying that they're never going home. But Junior assures her that Speckles will come for him, no matter what.

With no scent to follow, Speckles wanders aimlessly through the desert, eventually collapsing from exhaustion. He is discovered by a Saichania named Cy, who tries to attack him but ends up toppling right over at Speckles feet. Speckles questions why Cy would dare challenge him, and Cy responds by saying that he carries the scent of a group of Raptors that kidnapped and killed his best friend, Daisy. Speckles realises that Cy is talking about the same raptors that took Junior, and enlists his help to find his son.

Many miles from the compound, Cy's nose leads the two dinosaurs to a dark ravine. Cy states that they should go around, but Speckles doesn't want to waste a minute, and charges straight in. Cy follows slowly, but accidentally awakens a nest of Brontoscorpians. Luckily, Speckles comes to his aid, but many more appear, blocking the way out. But Speckles is not a Tarbosaurus that goes down easy. Using every bit of experience gained from battling One-Eye and the Velociraptors in the past, he takes on the entire nest of Brontoscorpians without a single injury. But just when it seems like he's in the clear, he is ambushed and stung by a Brontoscorpian hiding in the shadows. Regardless, he manages to defeat it too. The two dinosaurs escape from the ravine, but Speckles' sting wound is quickly spreading poison through his body. Cy tells Speckles he needs to treat it, but Speckles disregards his concerns and keeps going.

Speckles and Cy press on, intent on finding Junior, but Speckles' sting wound has gotten so bad he's starting to hallucinate. He believes he sees Junior walking over a dune, but when he climbs the dune himself, Junior is nowhere to be found. And this point, he completely collapses from exhaustion. Cy begs him to get up, when suddenly the sand beneath them begins to shift and they fall into a sinkhole. Cy awakens with Speckles in a large cave, with Speckles slowly beginning to go unconscious. But just before he loses consciousness, Speckles sees another Tarbosaurus entering the cave...and is shocked to see it's Blue Eyes walking towards him.

Speckles awakens in the cave to find a female Tarbosaurus attacking Cy. He attempts to fight her off, but is quickly subdued due to his weakness from the poison. The female reveals that she was the one that saved his life by gathering healing herbs for his sting wound. She then threatens to eat Cy, but Speckles defends his friend. The female introduces herself as Fang, and tells the two travellers that she's looking for her daughter who was kidnapped just like Junior and Daisy.

Blue decides to teach Junior and Dusty how to hit rocks with their tails, although the two of them aren't exactly naturals, with Dusty ending up sprawled on the floor and Junior ending up with a bruised tail. What the trio realise too late though is by drawing Dusty out of the sewers, she is at the mercy of the raptors, and Ditto happens to pick her to exit the Compound. Blue tries to stop them, but Blade appears, telling her that they'll take her too if she fights back. Later that day, Junior has a nightmare that he is drowning, and yells for Speckles to save him. The nightmare quickly shifts to Dusty begging for Junior to save her, and Junior is awoken.

After Dusty is taken, Junior and Blue manage to capture the Dsungaripterus that the raptors trust. Junior promises to give him all of his food in return for information on where the raptors take the young dinosaurs. The Dsungaripterus reveals that beyond the compound there is a mountain of fire, within which something has awoken...a beast like no other. The beast has three sons, which treat the young dinosaurs as playthings. But once they tire of playing with them...they tear them apart. Junior tells Blade and Slash that they need to escape, but Slash states it's pointless and stalks away. Blade seems to consider it for a moment, before following Slash.

Speckles, Cy and Fang make it to an Oasis filled with Mamenchiasaurus, but soon realise that a group of Carnotaurus are stealing their eggs. Fang tries to help them, but Speckles insists that they need to keep moving, and that their kids need them. Despite this, Fang charges in to help, and Speckles and Cy soon follow. The leader of the Carnos eventually challenges Speckles' personally, but Speckles easily defeats him. The Mamenchiasaurus are grateful and the three heroes journey on.

Junior, Blue and Blade work together to try and escape. Junior lures the raptors away while Blue and Blade launch rocks at them. When all the raptors are knocked out, the three try to escape, but it is revealed that Slash has betrayed them, selling them out to the raptors. Blade manages to escape, but Junior and Blue are captured and thrown in a cave prison.

With Junior and Blue having been captured by the raptors, they look up at the night sky. Not too far away, Speckles, Fang and Cy do the same. Speckles reflects on his mistake of mistreating Junior, fearing that he may never again get to tell him he loves him. Junior also reflects on what his father told him: there are many dangerous things in the world, but a life in the shadows is not a life worth living.

Running from the Earthquake, Speckles, Fang and Cy come across a dead end filled with rocks. Luckily the Mamenchisaurus they helped the previous day are nearby, and they help to clear the rubble. They finally make it to the compound, and manage to fight off the giant swarm of raptors guarding it, while Blade rescues Junior, Blue and all the other baby dinosaurs.

Junior, Blue and Blade resurface in a large cave, which they discover is filled with bones. However, they soon reunite with Dusty, the young Monoclonius who has been hiding in the cave since she was taken. They then discover what she was hiding from: the three terrifying babies of the Monster. Luckily, Speckles and Fang come to their rescue, but Speckles once again scolds Junior, telling him he should have been able to take them on, even though that's what he was doing. Junior then sulks off, and Blue and Dusty tell Speckles that it really was Junior who saved them.

At long last, Speckles, Fang and Cy are nearing their destination. On the way, they encounter the three raptors, who are threatening to kill Dsunga, the Dsungaripterus who helped Junior, Blue and Blade try to escape. However, the three heroes ambush them, trapping Ditto. He tells them where the compound is, but is then yeeted off a cliff by Cy. He manages to survive for a moment, hanging to a cliff, but an earthquake begins, crushing Ditto between two giant rock faces.

Whilst trying to escape from the exploding Volcano, Junior, Blue and Blade are caught up by Slash and the two remaining Raptors. Blade tells the others that he has to face Slash alone, and Junior tells him to watch his back. Blade knocks Slash and one of the Raptors off the cliff, but is pinned down by the other. Luckily, Blue and Junior come to the rescue, and the three of them knock the final raptor off the cliff. Slash and the previous raptor were trying to hold on, but Slash's claws break and the three of them hurtle down into the lava. The three of them finally make it to the stream, and for a moment, Junior once again remembers his childhood nightmares, but then remembers that his father told him that all it takes is confidence, and he builds up the courage to jump into the river.

Speckles runs over to Junior, who remains unmoving, He repeatedly nudges him, begging him to get up, as molten lava begins to seep from the walls of the cave. He whispers to Junior that he's sorry, and that he'll never judge him again. But with Junior still unmoving, he roars in fury, and begins to cry. Junior's friends crowd around him, mourning the loss of their friend, but as Dusty sneezes, there is a flicker of movement from Junior's lifeless body, and they realise he's alive. Junior's eyes fly open, and Speckles begs him to forgive him for being such an inconsiderate father, telling him that he's a brave Tarbosaurus. Junior smiles, saying that he's just like his dad, and the two of them roar in triumph.

Having heard the cries of it's children, the Monster of Fire Mountain finally emerges, and it's bigger than anyone could ever imagine. The group takes refuge in a small crack within the cave walls, but Junior is still outside and the monster begins to attack him. The group rush out and begin to attack the monster, but realise the cave is about to collapse and begin to flee. Falling rubble eventually crushes the Monster, but with its last ounce of strength, it swipes at Junior, sending him flying and smashing hard against the ground.

The group flee from the approaching lava, only to be met by a dead end with a few trickles of light visible from the other side. They try to break through, but the wall is completely solid. Hearing a growl from behind them, they turn and see the Monster emerge from the lava, apparently unscathed. Speckles looks back at the wall, and has an idea. He tells the others to move away, and taunts the monster, trying to get it to attack him. It lunges out of the lava towards him, but he dodges at the last second, crashing into the cave wall and unblocking the way out. The group rushes through as the cave collapses behind them.

Having escaped the volcano, the group reach a bountiful land filled with green: their new home. Cy tells them he must leave now to rejoin his own kind, and Speckles thanks him, saying that he couldn't have found Junior without him. And as Speckles and Junior head off into a new future, one thing's for certain...Blue Eyes would be proud.

The next morning, Junior attempts to hunt a Pachycephalosaurus to prove himself to his father. But he is ambushed by five Raptors; he calls for Speckles to come and save him while the Raptors taunt him. Speckles hears the cries of his son and rushes to save him, but the Raptors quickly grab Junior and run back the way they came. Speckles chases them to the edge of his territory, where two of the Raptors attempt to stall him and allow the others to escape. Speckles throws them both off a cliff, but is dragged off himself, plunging downwards into the river below. After dragging himself from the river, he attempts to track Junior and his kidnappers, but it soon begins to rain, and both Junior's tracks and scent are washed away. Junior awakens in a harsh desert crater, surrounded by hundreds of young dinosaurs. A young Therizinosaurus named Slash immediately picks on Junior for being frightened, but he is defended by a young female Tarbosaururs named Blue. Slash attempts to attack Blue, but his friend, a Carnotaurus named Blade, tells him to stand down. Moments later, the raptors that kidnapped Junior arrive, herding the young dinosaurs together, and picking three to take out of the compound. Back at the Compound, Junior tries to seek shelter in one of the many caves, but all the other dinosaurs force him out. Blue then arrives, mocking Junior again for not defending himself from Slash. Junior tells her he's waiting until he can go home, to which she responds by saying that they're never going home. With no scent to follow, Speckles wanders aimlessly through the desert, eventually collapsing from exhaustion. He is discovered by a Saichania named Cy, who tries to attack him but ends up toppling right over at Speckles feet. Many miles from the compound, Cy's nose leads the two dinosaurs to a dark ravine. Cy states that they should go around, but Speckles doesn't want to waste a minute, and charges straight in. Cy follows slowly, but accidentally awakens a nest of Brontoscorpians. Luckily, Speckles comes to his aid, but many more appear, blocking the way out. But Speckles is not a Tarbosaurus that goes down easy. Using every bit of experience gained from battling One-Eye and the Velociraptors in the past, he takes on the entire nest of Brontoscorpians without a single injury. But just when it seems like he's in the clear, he is ambushed and stung by a Brontoscorpian hiding in the shadows. Regardless, he manages to defeat it too. The two dinosaurs escape from the ravine, but Speckles' sting wound is quickly spreading poison through his body. Blue decides to teach Junior and Dusty how to hit rocks with their tails, although the two of them aren't exactly naturals, with Dusty ending up sprawled on the floor and Junior ending up with a bruised tail. What the trio realise too late though is by drawing Dusty out of the sewers, she is at the mercy of the raptors, and Ditto happens to pick her to exit the Compound. Blue tries to stop them, but Blade appears, telling her that they'll take her too if she fights back. Later that day, Junior has a nightmare that he is drowning, and yells for Speckles to save him. Junior promises to give him all of his food in return for information on where the raptors take the young dinosaurs. The Dsungaripterus reveals that beyond the compound there is a mountain of fire, within which something has awoken...a beast like no other. The beast has three sons, which treat the young dinosaurs as playthings. But once they tire of playing with them...they tear them apart. Junior tells Blade and Slash that they need to escape, but Slash states it's pointless and stalks away. Blade seems to consider it for a moment, before following Slash. However, they soon reunite with Dusty, the young Monoclonius who has been hiding in the cave since she was taken. They then discover what she was hiding from: the three terrifying babies of the Monster. Luckily, Speckles and Fang come to their rescue, but Speckles once again scolds Junior, telling him he should have been able to take them on, even though that's what he was doing. Junior then sulks off, and Blue and Dusty tell Speckles that it really was Junior who saved them. At long last, Speckles, Fang and Cy are nearing their destination. On the way, they encounter the three raptors, who are threatening to kill Dsunga, the Dsungaripterus who helped Junior, Blue and Blade try to escape. However, the three heroes ambush them, trapping Ditto. He tells them where the compound is, but is then yeeted off a cliff by Cy. He manages to survive for a moment, hanging to a cliff, but an earthquake begins, crushing Ditto between two giant rock faces.
