In a year of wildly good Ride XP, this was the biggest surprise. I had never heard of Nan in northeast Thailand when I got invited to this trip, and I was blown away by the quality of the mountain roads there. Had a wonderful time there on the Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650, which I was riding for the first time, and made great friends from around the region.

Check out the video in the link in the comments 🙂

Our first day riding in Nan, northeast Thailand, was everything I hoped it could be and more. The route took us from Nan Airport to the sleepy, pretty river valley town of Sapan. Winding, scenic, perfectly surfaced mountain roads, quaint small towns, and easy access to good food, drinks, and places to stay along the way. An easy ride even with occasional showers, and the Super Meteor 650 was right at home on every mile.

Finally own a nice retro off-road helmet to go with my retro off-road bike. Very light light and comfy even with an intercom, and of course legendary style. A bit impractical on the highway, but all romantic things are a bit of a pain. ;)

Tbh taking on a narrative film was a bit daunting, but in the end it became an enjoyable process of going from script to screen thanks to my team. I was insistent on having a clear narrative with setups and payoffs and not creating a glorified commercial, while keeping in mind this is a competition piece for a brand that needs to showcase the spirit of their product.

I definitely want to make more narrative films in the future with what I learned from making this and from watching the amazing entries made by the other filmmakers. Grateful to Yamaha Motor Philippines, Inc. for the opportunity to learn and grow and make some cool stuff with their support!

The Himalayan 411 and 450 weigh the same fully fueled and share a similar soul, but they’re very different bikes.

I’ve been riding the 411 since I learned how to ride. It was never intimidating even back then. I think it’s a bike that’s always allowed the average rider to travel far and go far beyond the pavement even without any technical skill. It’s slow, solid, and dependable.

In contrast, the 450 feels like a proper adventure bike. Taller, faster, more modern and capable in every way like a proper ADV. But with that it’s also become more intimidating and more top heavy, requiring a little more confidence and skill to handle. IMHO it’s a much more rewarding bike to ride and to develop your skills on, with a nimble chassis and excellent suspension, but I don’t think it’s a bike I would have enjoyed as much as an absolute beginner. To me the new Himmy almost feels like a middleweight ADV in refinement but skinnier, lower, and less powerful.

Which would you pick for a big adventure?
