Friday Podcast Tip

Breathing is vital! But breathing sounds have a habit of finding their way into your recordings.

To fix this issue, sit with your back straight and try taking smaller breaths.

If you need to take a deep breath, try to move your mouth away from the mic.

Friday Podcast Tip

Put out the good vibes and get some publicity in return!

Mentioning similar podcasts on your show increases the likelihood that your podcast will come up in recommendations on podcasting platforms.

You don't even need to feature another podcaster as a guest to take advantage of this opportunity to grow your audience!

If you've always wanted to start your own podcast but don't know quite where to start, The DIY Podcast Program can have you up and running in just 8 weeks!

Writing Tip

Look for inspiration in your everyday interactions.

It may sound more productive to cloister yourself away as you work on your book, but integrating your day-to-day experiences into your writing process can be much more fruitful.

Be attentive to the world around you and the characters that inhabit it. Notice people's idiosyncrasies, ways of presenting themselves and unique physical traits.

Let them inspire you to create richly-detailed characters.

Building an audience for your new podcast isn't easy, but you can generate interest on Social Media by releasing a trailer in the weeks leading up to your launch.

Creating a 30-second video with a voiceover and elevator pitch for the show will do the trick. Make it short and sweet, and don't forget to highlight the features and benefits for your listeners.

Like most of us, the royals have their favourite books and authors.
The Queen herself is a massive fan of the works of Agatha Christie and Dick Francis.

Meanwhile, Prince Charles adores the Harry Potter series (who knew). His wife Camilla's top pick is The Book of Dust by Phillip Pullman.

If you're at a loose end today, how about having a go at writing something others might enjoy? Perhaps even a royal?

When you have a writing project, consistency is the key.

Take some advice from Ernest Hemingway.

" When I am working on a book or a story, I write every morning as soon after first light as possible. There is no one to disturb you, and it is cool or cold, and you come to your work and warm as you write. You read what you have written and, as you always stop when you know what is going to happen next, you go on from there. "

Knowing what will happen next sets you up for the following morning, the morning after that, and so on...

How's your typing? Chances are, it could use some improvement.

Like it or not, keyboard skills are a must in the information age, especially if you're writing to a deadline.

And improvement requires practice. Luckily, there are plenty of online tools to help!

Kebr may be the most popular, with plenty of drills and settings to help improve your speed and confidence.

Are you still looking for a topic for your podcast?

Life is full of new experiences. Try exploring a new area and take your audience along for the ride.

It could be as accessible as exploring a series of films or books for the first time.

Review your experience and invite aficionados for interviews or debates on the topic.

For example, you could do a ten-part series on being a first-time golfer. Fans and newbies alike will be able to relate.

Adequate hydration is essential, especially when you're hosting a podcast.

Before recording, make sure you drink at least a small glass of water.

This will reduce the distracting little noises your mouth makes when it is dry and help you stay focused and energised.

MS Word Hack

Working on your first draft, you may want to use placeholder text for layout purposes. You are probably familiar with the lorem ipsum placeholder text people use in such cases.

But did you know that MS Word has a built-in function to quickly and easily add as much placeholder text as needed?

Type either:

=rand(P,L) for randomly-generated text,
or,
=lorem(P,L) for lorem ipsum text.

Replace P with the number of paragraphs you need and L with the number of lines per paragraph.

So, =rand(3,5) will give you three paragraphs of random text, five lines per paragraph.

It takes time to build an audience for your podcast.

To get there faster, release at least 3 to 5 episodes when you launch. This way, you increase the likelihood of early listeners subscribing.

Ending the episode of your final batch with a teaser is a great way to ensure they'll be back for more.

Doing this is also a great way to drum up early feedback to refine your show.

MS Word Hack

We all like to mix things up with our font sizes and styles from time to time. But our creative flourishes don't always jibe with the submission requirements imposed by others.

To make life easy, set a conservative default style and size. Then change it to suit your mood for whatever your project is.

You can change to default by highlighting the text and hitting:

CTRL SHIFT N

Writing Tip

As the days get shorter and the weather cooler, it can be hard to stay motivated.

Try keeping a totem - an object that helps fuel your positivity or provides inspiration, on your writing desk.

Charles Dickens kept a collection of figurines, and Russel Banks has an old gravestone in his office to remind him that life is short.

What will be your totem? Comment below.
