Former Chinese President Jiang Zemin, who led the country for a decade of rapid economic growth died on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at the age of 96, prompting a wave of nostalgia for the more liberal times he oversaw. News agency Xinhua said he steered the country through a transformational era from the late 1980s and into the new millennium.
When Jiang replaced Deng Xiaoping as the leader in 1989, China was still in the early stages of economic modernization. By the time he retired as president in 2003, China was a member of the World Trade Organization, Beijing had secured the 2008 Olympics, and the country was well on its way to superpower status.
Jiang died in his home city of Shanghai just after noon on Wednesday of leukemia and multiple organ failure, Xinhua news agency said, publishing a letter to the Chinese people by the ruling Communist Party, parliament, Cabinet, and the military. He is survived by his wife Wang Yeping and two sons.
