SENT FROM HEAVEN
Sometimes, help can come from a very unlikely and unexpected source. In fact, my elder sister used to tell me that sometimes, God doesn’t send his angels to help you. He comes down himself to do it, and you can know it because of how dramatic it happens.
Many years ago, I had just moved to the city and was struggling to get into university. I began by applying and that meant I had to put some vital documents together to attach to my application letter. Some of these documents had to be certified by a government official. In this part of the world, that required either the Governor or his Secretary General, a Senior Divisional Officer or a Divisional Officer and their assistants.
I woke up that morning and dressed up ready to go to the D.O’s office because I was told that he was the one handling certification of documents on that day. When I got there, I immediately noticed two things. The first thing that I noticed was that I was very poorly dressed because I had just moved to the city from the village, and had not yet adjusted to city life and their way of dressing. The second thing I noticed was that the place was parked full with, and I am not exaggerating, a thousand applicants, all wanting to certify their documents.
How was I going to start? For a start, I was suffering from serious inferiority complex because of the way I was dressed. Now, the place was so parked full that I couldn’t tell how long I was going to stay there before getting my documents signed.
Soon, a gentleman came and told us that we should all stand in a straight queue. There was a small scramble as we all struggled to get in line. That was my opportunity. I used my village sense to place myself in front of several people who had been there before me. The gentleman announced that we were required to get a physical stamp each. These stamps had to be pasted on our documents for them to be signed.
That was a problem to me now. I hadn’t bought a stamp yet. That meant I had to leave the space I had managed to secure and go to the stamp office to get one. I was not the only one. There were about a hundred of us who hadn’t had stamps yet. By the time I got back to the D. O’s office after purchasing the stamp, one hour had passed.
I struggled to locate where I had been standing before I went to get the stamp. Finally, I did, but when I tried to get back to my position, I noticed that a huge guy with a stern face had already occupied the space. No one needed to tell me that he wasn’t going to yield or budge no matter how much explanation I did. So, in order to save myself the embarrassment and possible a series of punches, I decided to stay away.
Now, that meant I had to go back to the end of the line. That would place about seven hundred applicants in front of me. The line was so long that it extended right to the main road that led to the office. Because the sun was overhead and I was already overwhelmed by the whole thing, I decided that I was not going to stand in the queue. I would just stand there in the building.
An hour later and I was still standing there. I was hungry, sad, tired and frustrated. I knew no one and didn’t even have anyone to talk to. As I stood there, I noticed that there was a lady, possibly the D. O’s secretary, who was collecting documents from applicants. She would come, collect the documents of about twelve people, take them to her boss’ office to be certified and then, come back for more.
Under normal circumstances, from the way things were going, it was going to take at least five hours before my turn reached, and by then, it would well be above working hours. That meant, I had to come back the following day to begin the process all over again. Exhausted and frustrated, I decided that it was time to leave. As I took the first step towards the exit, a miracle happened.
“Hey! Young man.” I heard the voice of a lady. “Please, come here.”
I turned around and in disbelief, asked.
“Me? Are you talking to me, Madam?”
“Yes, you. Come and give your documents to me.”
I was shocked. That lady, the D.O’s secretary had abandoned all the hundreds of people she was supposed to attend to before me, just to attend to me. I felt like I had just been located by a famous and powerful man of God during a crusade attended by thousands of worshippers. I walked towards her and handed my documents to her.
To prove that she was really very intentional, she collected my documents only and went to her boss’ office, got them certified, came back to me and handed them to me. I froze where I stood. I didn’t even know what to do or say. Finally, words came to my mouth.
“Thank you, Ma’am. Thank you, so much. May God bless you always.” I spoke excitedly.
“It’s alright, you may go now.” She smiled.
Well, I was granted admission and graduated four years later. Some years later, I went back to the office to reward the woman who had come to my aid at such a desperate time, but I didn’t meet her. I was told that she had been transferred to another town. No matter the case, I know God will bless her wherever she is, and someday, the help that she rendered to me, is going to be given to her children.
