Victory Week at Fort Jackson kicked off this morning with a Post Run. At the end of the run, each unit was celebrated with a canon salute. The 282d Army rock band and brass band both performed for the Soldiers. Victory Week continues with sporting events, a demonstration by the Golden Knights, the Commanding General's Golf Scramble and culminating in the 248th Fort Jackson Army Ball on Saturday.
Victory Week is observed the first week of June in celebration of the establishment of what is now Fort Jackson. On June 2, 1917, the War Department granted final approval for the location of an Army Training Center in Columbia, South Carolina. Construction of Camp Jackson began on June 21, 1917. On June 23, 1917, the first Soldiers, one hundred ten men from Company E, 1st Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, arrived at Camp Jackson. This year's Victory Week celebration marks Fort Jackson’s 106th Birthday.
