Long before Dana White's rich friends bought the UFC, and even longer before Dana White was filmed slapping his wife and didn't get any punishment for it, Art Davie and Rorion Gracie had an idea. Eight fighters from different disciplines, coming together like gladiators to finally determine which martial art was the most effective. Most people didn't have any idea who would win, but most people hadn't encountered Gracie Jiu Jitsu. The first UFC was an unorganized, awkward showcase for an idea that would change combat sports forever.

The Snark Marks have decided to rebrand. No, we will not stop doing wrestling shows, we will just also be regularly doing non-wrestling shows. This podcast started because Dusty and Andrew love talking to each other, and we thought we could have even more fun on our podcast if we allowed ourselves to talk about more of the topics that we enjoy. So now, instead of a wrestling retrospective podcast, we consider ourselves simply a retrospective podcast. Expect shows on MMA, movies, comedians, professional wrestling and all kinds of other nonsense we find fascinating. We love this show and we are excited to broaden our horizons in 2023!

Vince Russo came up with some doozies during his time on wrestling creative teams (shout out to the Bat Man), but perhaps his worst idea was when he suggested that the product should be real. A group of professional wrestlers, nearly all of whom have no real organized fighting training or experience, were going to actually fight on a show filled with works and fakery. Ultimately, bunch of flailing, exhausted, injured sports entertainers stunk up the ring to no ultimate benefit for anybody carrying out perhaps mainstream wrestling's worst idea in history.

1989 was a tumultuous year for the NWA. With Dusty Rhodes leaving as WCW booker, a power vacuum was created that eventually led to a booking-by-committee situation. This could have led to a bad year product-wise, but at least at the big shows, the talent on the roster and the quality of their work produced a fantastic year for wrestling. For some reason, they decided to end the year with two non-title round robin tournaments. Was it a good idea? No! Was there some fun to be had? Kind of, I guess! We got to see some more great Ric Flair work, at least. Join us as we say goodbye to 1989 in our season 5 finale!

Being that the score was not settled at Halloween Havoc (Settling the Score), Ric Flair and Terry Funk decided to, once and for all, settle the score. This time, they will face off in an "I Quit" match. Also, Jim Cornette seems to be paying a lot of attention to his new tag team The Dynamic Dudes, and the Midnight Express is not exactly jazzed about it. This PPV was short, fun, and ultimately score settling.

Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes were classic wrestling adversaries. The son of a plumber who fought for the common man was always going to clash with the arrogant, self-centered rich man whose shoes cost more than your house. Dusty and Andrew watched 3 classic Rhodes-Flair matches (including Starrcades 1984 and 1985) and a bunch of promos in preparation for getting together and talking about this historic rivalry.

The Rhodes-Flair talk is a later in the episode. We talk about Andrew helping to find a lost cat (beginning to 12:49), the current state of AEW (12:49-43:45), and then we get into the main topic at hand.

Dusty Rhodes may have been the perfect professional wrestler. He was a guy who the crowd could easily imagine standing next to them in the audience, but who could also make them believe in magic and the power of a dream. Rhodes is perhaps the favorite performer of the Snark Marks, and we spent some time discussing him and his appeal after watching two of the Peacock documentaries about him. Long live the Common Man. After Wrestlepocalypse: Hubris (Extreme Arrogance In The Eyes of Godwin), Commissioner Idell has seemingly been humbled. He's improved his treatment of his wrestlers, he's been booking more... conventionally, and his threat to the wrestling world seems to be thwarted. GCWF and their strategy of booking great matches and protecting the businesss seems to have proven to be the sustainable model. Maybe, though, like Lord Voldemort, Idell wasn't defeated. Maybe he was just recharging.

Classic Survivor Series PPVs are polarizing. On one hand, since there must be seven pin falls per match, the matches are sooooooo looooooong. On the other hand, when else are you going to see Bret Hart wrestling under the captaincy of Hacksaw Jim Duggan? Our journey through 1989 was short and sweet, and the Survivor Series was a great way to round it off. It's as if we were caught dabbling in the wacky personalities on the roster of the time, and the Survivor Series made us smoke the whole pack.

The Mega Powers have officially exploded and it's time to settle it in the ring. Hulk and Savage are eager to get their hands on each other with Miss Elizabeth in a neutral corner, but in true 1989 WWF fashion, we all have to wade through like 30 matches before we get to the issue at hand. Wrestlemania V was too long, but the stakes in the main event could not have been higher. Oh, also, there are a couple of appearances from the future orange future President of the United States who happened to own the building.

The 1980s are coming to a close, and WWF is on top of the world. The roster is packed with big personality after big personality, and one guy who thinks he's a rooster for some reason. At the top of the heap are the Mega Powers, a tag team consisting of Champion "Macho Man" Randy Savage and the immortal Hulk Hogan. All good things come to an end, however, and this is part 1 of a series that examines the split between Hogan and Savage, and the lead up to a decline for the World Wrestling Federation.

Growing up, Dusty's love for wrestling wasn't the easiest to cultivate. He had to sustain himself with WWF home videos featuring house matches between wrestlers who he loved.. only they're unmotivated and mostly end in DQs. This particular one is supplemented with frequent vignettes of Bobby Heenan and Mean Gene at the golf course. Bobby and Gene tried, but there was no saving Rampage '91. I was going to include a match list, but it's nowhere to be found on the internet and you better believe I will not be going back to check. Ultimate Warrior, Undertaker, Mr. Perfect, Dino Bravo, and The Barbarian all make appearances.
