7 ways social media is stopping your growth.

This article was a bit of a deep dive into how social media actually affects our day to day lives. The cost of having social media is high, no matter whether we use it a little bit or a lot. And yes, there are of course many benefits to social media, but we should definitely be taking the time to reflect on whether it’s a net positive contributor to our lives!

Work can be hard.

At times, entire seasons can pass where you feel like it’s taking all of your energy just to show up.

Whether you work from home, or from an office, our work day is often challenging.

But why? Why is work sometimes so difficult?

Well, the original reason stems from back in Genesis.

Adam and Eve have just eaten the apple, and God condemns them for falling out of relationship with Him. He says to Adam:

“‘Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. “It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.’” (Genesis 3:17-18)

‭‭Painful toil and sweating. Not my ideal version of a workday.

Even though many of us don’t do hard manual and agricultural labour anymore, sin is still present in workplaces and can cause pain.

Maybe that’s a difficult meeting with a client that’s expecting the impossible. Or perhaps you deserve a promotion, but your Boss either can’t or won’t see it.

These experiences can make us tired and weary, and can cause us to question God’s faithfulness and goodness.

‬But this is the opposite of what God wants - He doesn’t want us to doubt him, he wants us to trust him!

As Paul starts to wrap up his first letter to the Corinthian Church, he writes this:

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians‬ ‭15‬:‭58)

Paul reminds us that our efforts at work will be effective and successful!

God is faithful and good to us despite our sinful nature, and Paul urges us to keep recommitting to God’s plan for our lives and to work to bring his kingdom here.

So, if work is getting tough, stand firm!

God is right there with you in your commute, your meetings, in your relationships, and he will never let you down.

Success is on the way!

.

What is it? And how can we become more empathetic people at work?

Empathy is “the skill of connecting with others to identify and understand their thoughts, perspectives, and emotions; and demonstrating that understanding with intention, care, and concern.”

Recent research by Catalyst Inc. has found that empathyhelps bond colleagues together and forms the foundation of a resilient and inclusive workplace. And, although it is often underestimated as a business skill, their findings suggest that empathy is essential to success in the future of work. Here are three things to know:

1. It’s possible to cultivate and develop empathy.

2. There are three aspects of empathy: cognitive (head/thinking), affective (heart/feeling), and behavioral (action/doing).

3. Empathy links to many positive outcomes that teams can leverage to become more agile and innovative in times of crises.

Belinda Parmar OBE, CEO of The Empathy Business, that the best way to create the conditions is by using ‘empathy nudges’.

These are small shifts that you commit to making in the way you do things.

Commit to 5-10 nudges, and make them easy to achieve and low cost high impact!

Here are six empathy nudge examples:

1. Changing the way you speak
(more understanding)

2. Change them way you run internal meetings
(more flexible)

3. Change the way you give feedback
(more positive)

4. Change the way you write
(more considerate)

5. Change the way you have difficult conversations
(more compassionate)

6. Change the way you listen
(more approachable)

Empathy does, and will continue to play a massive role in our work, but Belinda says that it’s important to remember that it’s about progress, not perfection.
