What does the course look like?

The course is hosted on Discord, a community messaging platform. Once you have subscribed to the course, you will have full access to the service.

The course is split into multiple different categories, which you can easily swap between as shown on the left side of the screen. In each of these sections, you will find a 5-15 minute pre-recorded video tutorial that corresponds to the area of bagpipes/chanter you are working on. This is paired with any sheet music that is needed/used in the specific sections.

The 'interactive' sections of the Discord are the general chat, 'ask Kyle', tune of the week and the weekly live-streams. These sections allow you to have your say and get the support you need when required. We highly recommend the use of these areas, they will give you the best and easiest experience on the server.

What is Path to Piping?

Path to Piping is a completely new and contemporary way of learning the world famous instrument, the bagpipes. Subscribing to Path to Piping will give you full access to our Discord server.

On this server you will find a carefully structured, pre-recorded course which includes lessons taking you all the way from never having picked up a chanter before, to playing the most advanced tunes.

The course is designed to be worked through at a pace which suits you best, removing the huge commitment of weekly one-on-one lessons. So what if you find a problem or are unsure with something in the course? Learning any instrument is not an easy task. This is why you will have the full support of a professional piper, on hand to answer and smoothen out all of the problems and questions you have about the material, available 24/7. You will also have the chance to ask questions and request tunes in the weekly livestreams hosted by the tutor, Kyle Rowan.

Not only does the Discord server include the vast amount of video tutorials in the core course, but also has in depth lessons on how to read music, how to write music, areas where you can learn about the history of the bagpipe, and also full breakdowns and walk-throughs of some of the most complicated aspects of bagpipe maintenance. You will also have free access to an abundance of sheet music for the tunes you are learning.

We want you to feel a part of a community when you join us, and we strongly encourage the use of the general chat areas, where you can discuss with your fellow pipers all things piping, and discuss how you are finding the course. Welcome to the Path to Piping page!

Path to Piping was born off the idea that playing the bagpipes should be possible for all. However, because of the nature of the instrument, one on one lessons are often very expensive. And, for people not living in Scotland, they can be hard to find at all. Path to Piping removes the need for one on one lessons, and is arguably the most cost-friendly way of learning the bagpipes.

Bagpipe lessons in Scotland can range in price from £30-£50 per hour lesson, so having access to the vast depth of material for £49.99 a month is truly incredible value for money. The 10+ hours of pre-recorded material will guide you from how to hold the chanter all the way to learning the most advanced tunes.
